I know what you’ll ask: “Don’t the men have a list?”
Ah, the men! I’m working on a new book that will be the men’s version of “A Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style,” which is not to say I don’t believe that men can benefit from the current book. Many of the 10 Essential Items for women are appropriate for men, too: the classic white shirt, dress pants, a blazer, a trench coat, jeans, a cashmere sweater, a sweatsuit alternative. I’ll add a suit to that list and ponder the remaining essentials.
One of the things we talk about helping Rebecca do in this episode is to help her see herself more objectively. It isn’t easy, or else everyone would be able to do it.

I definitely related to a lot of things about Rebecca and her life. I love fashion and am in the process of making over my own wardrobe! Slowly! Guide to Style gave me plenty of tips! Thank you!

Great advice and really engaging people involved. The final scene with Rebecca and her husband was so real, I was happy to see that the pro's were also touched by it. I came to the website to find the 10 Essentials List for Women: Here's what I have so far: Black dress, trench coat, dress pants, white blouse, day dress, sweatsuit alternative, blazer, jeans, cashmere sweater. Keep up the good work, I'll be watching again next week.

I really only hate the fact that I have a "poochie" belly that I can't seem to get rid of. Are you ever going to have a show that hits my age level and body type? Rebecca was cute as can be, but all these fashion shows seem to be about young, thin women, and there are thousands of us out here who are short, older, and with tummies we hate, and we seem to be forgotten. We have the money to spend on clothes, but no one is telling us how to dress for our age and body flaws (gravity and age are not kind.) Micky McNiel in Iowa

As a big fan of you from Project Runway I purchased your book as soon as it came out. It would not be an overstatement to say it has changed my life -- I've always loved clothes but maybe too much! She who loved not wisely but all too well...lol. But I realized as I read your book that I was a 32 year old woman still caught in the dressing mentality of the 22 year old post-grad.
I've just started a new job in an industry that requires a very sharp appearance and your book has been invaluable to me in re-learning how to dress. More importantly, it has helped me alter my view of myself (in a wonderful way). So thank you! And I'm so excited your show has finally premiered. I've been waiting with baited breath for weeks now!

I recently helped a friend who asked me with her wardrobe, and found myself going through many of the motions you did on Episode 1. The experience was fun and liberating for both of us, and left me feeling like I'd really done her a great service.

I loved the list of 10 things to buy. I am looking at my own closet full of "mommy sweats" and nothing else, thinking about how to change that.
But seriously...I would like to see someone make a body like mine look good in clothes. I have a thick, butchy body, but not a butchy personality. I would LOVE to look girlie, but it just can't happen. I have a hard time figuring it out on my own.
Anyway, 3 years ago, our house caught fire and was gutted while we took our kids to swimming lessons. Crazy. I immediately went out and bought 3 pair of jeans and 5 tshirts to live in while we figured out our life and worked through the mess with the insurance, blah blah blah. I loved the simplicity of a no brainer wardrobe for the 8 months of the rebuild. Nevermind that it was dumpy!
BUT...3 years later, a rebuild of that house, and a move to another new house built from scratch....I still have a dumpy wardrobe. Argh!
So, now that one of my kids is in school and I only have the two little ones home with me....I am going to try to do the Tim Gunn 10 items! (the stocky version)
Thanks for the good advice. (and the bra advice too. I would be embarassed to show you my 3 grey, dingy bras in real life. Time to put some money into ME)

I think I have a pretty good STYLE- but I'm not sure if everything I have is appropriate- especially since you hate capris on women our age- although- I DO have everthing on your list and I have built on that-and I do live in Louisiana and every inch of skin helps as long as it's not your triceps flapping in the breeze. We need a make-up and hair show. Am I wearing my hair short just because it's how I've always worn it? Or is it really good on me? I think we tend to get trapped in whatever we did in high school and what makes it really hard is that everyting in style now is what was in style when I was in high school- but like Calvin Klein once said, "If you're old enough to have worn it the first time around, you're probably too old to be wearing it now." Notice he said PROBABLY- that's what needs to be addressed. A great fitting jean has no age. A ruffled crop top doesn't belong on anyone over 20 icluding Heidi Klum (I think her stylist hates her). And lastly, I think you need to have a talk with Stacy London- she has great taste for other people but sometimes she doesn't look in the mirror before she walks into the studio.

I am a huge fan of Tim Gunn's taste, style, and his ability to mix kindness and honesty. But although a gay male myself, even I know that one doesn't give another man's wife an engagement ring! That ring symbolises the commitment between those two people. It has to be chosen by them, within their means. It has to represent their relationship. One could see from the husband's comments about providing for his woman that he was humilated by that experience, while choosing to go along with it for his wife's sake. A very sour note in an otherwise harmonious episode. Perhaps Tim needs to get a relationship coach as one of his consulting experts before choosing any more "special gifts." It was wonderful to see Catharine Malandrino again, though--what a wonderful designer she is! Best of luck with the new series.

Absolutely love this show! It takes a staid concept and amps it up by giving lessons on how to figure out your own personal style rather than just offering professional advice that is specifically tailored for the one individual on the show.
I would love to see more added to this site that would go a long way in correcting the fashion sins of the world. Like an easily printed checklist of the 10 key wardrobe pieces to take shopping so were not lugging (and perhaps losing our copies of Tim's book). And then some of the great advice of hemlines, colors etc. to remind us of what we've gleaned from the show.
Only thing I'd change is the wonky life stylist... He seems to have a few nuggets of good advice to give but there's something disingenuous about his presentation of it; it's hard to find the pertinent info in all the schmaltz and gimmicks.

Hello!
I had the pleasure of watching Rebecca's episode last night and I must tell you "thank you". The show was wonderful and the premise - incredible. I appreciated the show, not just for the fashion, the information & education but for the essential human element. What lovely gestures to provide a diamond wedding band for her as well as to bring her mother in for the show. I truly believe acts of kindness such as you have shown are just as empowering as one's increased self-confidence. Thank you too for a glimpse of the world few "mere mortals" truly get to enter.
I look forward to your next episode!!

This show is the best because it teaches women how to look at themselves objectively and offers positive suggestions. I thoroughly enjoyed Rebecca's metamorphosis. I loved having Veronica go with her to make her choices instead of just sending her on her own without having the experience to know what to select.
My only suggestion is that you please have someone that is have all varieties of ages and figure types so we can see the ways to adapt.
I've purchased the book, planned to go get a properly fitting bra today, and am going through my closet today. Thanks for the help and keep up the fabulous work!

As a fan of Tim Gunn since Project Runway, I ran out and purchased his book, loved it, and was thrilled to see how he implemented his tutorial in real life. He showed how to build a wardrobe starting with a handful of classic pieces. I find it vastly different from "What Not to Wear" because it seems to address the whole person, their angst, their life, from a position of timelessness, not just how to be trendy and look good this week. I find Tim's method of bringing the person up to a level of style and class to be a very dynamic process that would work as the person ages or experiences life changes. I must sign off, it has become apparent that I must empty my closet and make four piles!! Way to Make It Work, Tim!!!

The show is OK..Not exactly a must see. I think producers/writers etc could have but together a better show for Tim Gunn then this one. I will be surprised if the show lasts more then 2 seasons..
Looking in underwear drawers is over the top and the least attractive part of the show.
The make-up segment of the show should be expanded giving more specific details of what products are being used and how to apply them.

But, last night's guide was very disappointing! I tuned to hear and see you share tips on style and dressing and there wasn't much substance there aside from the "core wardrobe" philosophy.
The life-style coach was silly. The bra lady was no more knowledgeable than any clerk at Bloomingdales. And the weepy business about the ring and the mother was just light years away from what I thought you would present on this show.
I think people will tune in to this show because they thinkk you have something substantial to say about style - not to be ambushed by blatant sentimentality.
I'm still a fan and I will tune next time...but I'd like to see the content kicked up a whole bunch of notches!

It looked to me like Augie found it humiliating that you were suggesting that the ring he gave her at their wedding was inadequate. It was insulting! How could you do that!
A wedding ring is a personal, important artifact, with a history. It's not a piece of fashion. Augie took that gift and passed it on to Rebecca with extraordinary grace, but his ability to make it work doesn't make up for the fact that it was a revolting gesture on the part of your show.

Tim Gunn, I love you and I will watch your show no matter what. And overall, I thought both the sneak preview and first episode had good basic elements. But! There were a few things that felt like a bad fit. It’s as if the producers need to embrace your “Your style, my rules” mantra more wholeheartedly. There are moments when the show feels all wrong for you. Here are some examples, rendered in your own language:
Life coach – Inchoate, lacks gravitas. The guy looks like he’s 14 and has not experienced enough of life to be giving advice. It is very much at odds with your own stately and wise persona.
Gifting – Immoderate, unpropitious. While the bag and shoes were relevant to the make-overs, the jewelry was too much. The ring gift in particular turned what was a perfectly happy moment into a mess of reality TV schadenfreude. The poor “couldn’t afford it” husband looked completely embarrassed and the family looked confused. And speaking of which -
Finale – Schmaltz, bordering on bathos. The mother-daughter outfit in the preview, the aforementioned ring scene AND the recovering-from-surgery mother’s appearance. No, no, no! It was tacky, the one thing Tim Gunn most emphatically is not!
Please don’t let the producers’ formulaic approach to make-over TV dilute what is best about YOUR style – your kind but practical, absolutely real, always decorous Tim Gunn-ness. These unfortunate elements dumb down the showcase of one of the smartest men on TV.

Dear Tim:
I, too, loved you on Project Runway and was thrilled to see you had your own show. I work full-time, am married, and have two young boys (Hank & Waylon --yes my husband is a Redneck! -- ages 7 and 5) at home. So many times I hear about shows but never see them because I don't have the time or I forget. I didn't forget about yours. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and am chomping at the bit till next Thursday.
I never was a fashion horse, wore t-shirts and jeans in high school, and then wore them oversized, thinking if they covered up my hips I'd look slimmer. I followed this train of thought for many years. Then a few years ago I heard about and started watching What Not to Wear. Because of it, I started dressing for my shape, found out I looked good and have since lost weight and am into size 6. I have never worn a size 6 in my life!
In short, because of WNTW, Project Runway, and you it's changed me. I think because I used to buy XL shirts, I thought of myself of XL when I wasn't. Of course, I equated smaller sizes with thinness and beauty (which I didn't think I was). Now I know I should wear size small tops, that they make me look good, and in turn I feel better about myself. Which makes me want to eat better, exercise, stay fit, look better . . .
I feel so much better about myself, more confident, all because I started dressing for my shape.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that because of these two shows and you, I found that dressing for your size makes you look good, feel good about yourself, and want to continue to look good and improve yourself. What you all have done for the women on your show and many others who have been there is immeasurable. To give confidence and make women feel good is a wonderful, wonderful thing.
So thank you, and don't stop. I love your personality, your openness, your honesty. And I can't wait to see more of you!!

Enjoyed the first show, and loved seeing Rebecca's confidence grow. One very big caveat: I think the show made a huge assumption when it decided to give Augie a new ring for his wife. Wedding/engagement rings carry enormous importance for a couple. Replacing them wouldn't be entered into lightly by anyone I know. The show should have at least let Augie pick a new ring, or better yet, pick any piece of jewelry (like great big diamond stud earrings!) for his bride. I think some long-lasting couples look back fondly on their modest wedding bands remembering how they struggled and through it all sustained their commitment to one another.

Good show . Like all the other people it is about time. The only problem I see is the large people. I do not mean 18 to 20 size. I am talking about the 3x and above. The people that would love to have help and there are a lot of us. I am on a budget and some of the clothes were beautiful, show us how to get the look when we do not have $150 for a pair of shoes. Can you use stores like Lane bryant and Cathlines (sp) They say that 64% of the people in the US is over weight just think of how beautiful they would look. NO more sweats at the Mall. Thank you for reading this and I hope that you will take all the information that has been listed and make more than one show. Project runway only did one for the real people and that was for the mothers program. Can not wait to see how this show goes. Gail

Thanks for sharing yourself and your knowledge about fashion with us, and thanks for making my Thursday nights even better!

Thank you so much for everything! I was fortunate enough to meet you and see the metamorphis of my daughter. She visited this past weekend and we went to Epcot. I asked what she would be wearing. She said, Tim would probably want to see me in a beautiful sundress. I said "to go to Epcot?" She said, "Of course, I feel so comfortable and feel so pretty in it". Next time Tim, I too will be wearing a sundress. We had a wonderful time and she looked beautiful. More importantly, she felt beautiful. Tim, I know this is not just a show to you. This is your passion. Thank you from my heart for such a one of a kind gift to my little girl. Bless you! May you receive all the happiness and joy life has to offer. You are one person who truly deserves it. You are real, original, and truly sincere.

Tim, I have appreciated you since the second season of PR. I'm in no way a "fashionista," but I do care, and your comments are always illuminating. I've already learned just from two episodes of your new show.
Question: Will you be working with women in their 50s and 60s? At 5'5" and 128 pounds, I'm not in bad shape for a 54-year-old woman, but it's still tough to come to terms with aging both in fashion and in grooming. I'm not clinging to my 20s the way Karen was in the "sneak peek" episode, but would like to find an attractive "older me" I can appreciate. (Especially as I'm self-employed with an office in my home!) Suggestions?
Bless you, Tim Gunn!

I want to post before reading anyone else's comments. My husband and I were watching the show and enjoying it. What's not to like about Tim Gunn? Erudite, articulate, dapper, supportive, genuine. And the show seemed pretty good too. Then came the part with the ring and we both had to avert our eyes. Okay, it's reality TV and you need some drama. Wasn't flying the Mom in drama enough? The Mom part was very sweet. But putting that poor husband on the spot with some ring he could never afford in a million years and manipulating the couple like that was more than we could stand. Such a lovely couple. There were more than lovely enough without that whole ring debacle. Why did such a nice show have to resort to such embarrassing tactics? My husband will never watch again. I'll watch one more time and give it another chance. But if anything like that happens again, that will be that. Thanks for listening.

I thank God for this show and for you! Being a "more seasoned" person, I look at people all youthful and tatooed up (like Jeffery) from Runway's last season and think, "yah, like this guy could have a finger on the pulse of fashion for us 40+ people. Don't get me wrong, his style sense is wonderful and as I watched his developing fashions I thought, "I'd love to wear that....if I were 25 again." You obviously have the experience and a true wisdom about what makes people feel good about themselves and your 10 must haves I purchased this week. I also went through the closet and found it amazing what I felt was "fashionable" versus what I always chose to put on and felt wonderful in when I looked in the mirror. Thanks again and I'll keep watching!!! MC

Great show. I like Bravo's take on reality shows, and "Guide To Style" is definitely keeping in that NY groove. I'd like to see Tim Gunn's "Guide To Style, For Men" to pick up where the Fab Five leave off- but one show at a time, they take a lot of work.
One jab though. You did very well with Rebecca appearance & if we take the postcard as genuine, the advice stuck. But this girl walks like Spongebob Squarepants! I thought that Ms. Webb would be able to straighten that out. You took the girl out of the t-shirt and jeans, but failed to instill new grace in her gait- any chance of fixing that?

Wonderful show, Tim. Truly.
Let me tell you what is powerful...
Watching this show, we, everyday women, are seeing that it's OK to stand in front of a mirror and look at ourselves, exactly as we are. You show us that no matter what our body shape is, we can find that look that brings out our best.
For many women, myself included, our only real brush with fashion is the magazines we read and what we see on TV. And it is always draped over a size 2 body. The message is "what's the point" when you know you aren't going to look like Kate Moss no matter what you wear.
Your show debunks that thinking.
You have a loyal fan!

Tim ... your reaction to the leggings kicked my mad love for you to dizzying new heights. "That was purely visceral."
I have to say I agree with most of the critiques about the show -- lose the "life stylist" (who doesn't look old enough to give ANYBODY life advice, and who cribbed his "soundtrack" thing from Ally McBeal's shrink), the contrived tearjerker moments, and the faux surprise intro.
I'd love to see you styling women who have more physical, financial, and lifestyle challenges than someone like Rebecca, who's young, childless, cute, and fit. I think it would be much more edifying to present how the average American woman can boost her own style. Because that's why most women will tune into this show (besides getting a huge dose of Tim Gunn) -- they want to relate to the subject getting made over, and to learn how to apply this knowledge to their own lives.
But there were so many more things about the show that I liked: the Optitech sequence, the shopping trips, the bra fitting, the faaaabulous Trish McEvoy/John Barrett makeover. Not to mention, Catherine Malandrino is one of my favorite designers; I LOVED the showroom sequence and covet the dress Rebecca chose.
Can't wait for the rest of the season! You totally rock.

Hey Tim,
I'm loving your new show! It appeals to us more common folks who think it is insane to have 5000 dollars to spend on clothes in two days. It should be about finding the essentials and building from there after we know what to look for in clothes.
I hope that I can see somebody on the show with my fitting problems. I am pretty skinny, but I am a large chested woman with a very small waist making it impossible to find clothes that fit properly in both areas. Either I can be 6 months pregnant and still wear the shirt or be a Pamela Anderson type and show off too much.

When I first heard about this show I thought "Oh, Bravo's doing "What Not to Wear." Well, I guess you still are- but this was so much more than I thought it would be! Your approach is clearer and even when you're snarky, you're not really out to hurt feelings (sorry, Clinton and Stacy, but I quit watching your show because you were TOO brutal with people).
I've watched fashion shows for years and can recite all the little things that fashion "experts" tell you but I never really cared about my own wardrobe: I'm a teeshirt/jeans/sneaker girl even though I'm nearly 26! You've inspired me to start looking for clothing that looks adult and flattering but is still "me."
I only wish you could work a bit more of PR into the show; maybe recycle some of the clothing that looks like it could almost be worth keeping with tweaking. But what you're already doing is so much more than I expected. Thanks, Tim!

Dear Tim,
As an artist I loved seeing you critique the designers work on Project Runway as you always seemed to pinpoint what was keeping a design from meeting it's full potential. You seem to have a wonderful personality and I can see why the network wanted to make a show around you. I was just "underwhelmed" with Guide To Style. I think your comments to a struggling designer who is trying to create something within the confines of a competition are invaluable but I am not convinced that translates to the hopelessly fashion impaired. I bet it's fun to make people over and I guess it makes you feel good when everyone is thankful and bawling with happiness but you seem so over qualified for it. How many times are you going to have to list your ten essential pieces of a wardrobe this season? I bet ALOT. I will miss you on Project Runway Mr. Gunn and I will try to keep an open mind about your new show too. Carry on.

I love the show-well I've only seen 2 episodes.I agree with the issue of fit but it is so hard to be over 40 and trying on clothes for an entire day. There are a couple of manufacterers that have changed their fits to accomodate older women, but for the most part I will try on 6 pairs of pants before I find something workable for me-and I'm a size 6. We give up, since it takes so long to shop now. I have two young children a career, house, husband and a very strong hobby-which is NOT shopping. Almost all of my pants and jackets also need time at the tailors so that entends my shopping time as well. Anyway, nice show.

As a fan of Project Runway, I was awaiting Tim's new show with great anticipation. I am a struggling, not-very-good home sewer, very adept at buying patterns which are shown to me in colors that are good for me, with no regard as to whether the fabric or line of the garment is any good for my body type. Project Runway really helped me see that making up a garment from start to finish is not a matter of cranking out a garment that looks like the one on the pattern envelope, but a whole design process that is a series of decisions and choices, all focused on achieving a desired effect. It made me think about fabric choices, line and design, whether the garment would be appropriate for the intended purpose, all the parts of the design process.
So I was hoping that when Tim had his own show, that 'make it work' design attitude would come across to the process of building a wardrobe. And I regret to say that after seeing the first episode, I was disappointed. Here we have the same tired old formula of ridiculing the client's old wardrobe, sending her off for life coaching, and all the other emotional scenes with family that we get in every other makeover show -- things that only take away from the real value that could be had in having Tim Gunn be the host of a show like this.
Many of us who struggle with buying clothes put on garments and know that we like some things about them -- but something isn't working, and we don't know what is wrong. We don't know enough or have the skill to 'make it work'. We may understand the idea that things can be altered, but we don't know what the alteration needs to be for that garment, and our local alterations people may not be much better.
Professionals are used to working with the exaggerated figure used in the fashion industry, but a lot of us ordinary folk, who don't have the proportions of a fashion model, just look in the mirror and think that no matter what we put on, it just looks 'wrong'. We struggle with how to make it look right, just as the designers did on Project Runway when they were confronted with bodies that did not meet the industry standards for fit models or runway models.
Tim Gunn, Rebecca Apsan, Carson Kressley and the other fashion profess
