A New Season and a Party!

June 29, 2006

To celebrate Season Three of Project Runway, the producers hosted a wrap party at The Park, a big club on 10th Avenue. This season will be great, but so far it’s been exhausting – for everyone. Days of relentless taping will unhinge even the most sane and stable among us! Designers, crew, producers, Bravo executives, judges, and Heidi and I were all happy to take a break and head off for a much-needed cocktail.

As Heidi and I left the auditorium where the Runway judgings are held, I turned to her and declared: “Heidi, in Season Four, you and I should have a hot and sweaty sex scene!” With a sultry manner, she put her arm around my shoulder and whispered, “We already have…” Huh? “And I’m pregnant.” She is! (But, Mother, I promise; the baby is Seal’s!)

timsblog_heidi_320x240.jpg

I ran to the party directly after hearing Heidi’s great news, but I promised to keep my mouth shut until the announcement was official. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the event and found that I was the LAST to learn of Heidi’s news. While she and I were still taping, a press release had gone out, so the entire world was already informed.

The party evolved into quite an event. We were joined by Season One’s Austin Scarlett and Jay McCarroll and Season Two’s Emmett McCarthy and Daniel Vosovic. I was so thrilled to see them, especially because they served as reminders that the designers from each season become part of the Project Runway Alumni Association; that is, they “graduate” and move onward – and upwards, hopefully – but they still remain part of the family.

The party was packed and raucous and cocktails were in proliferation. Then, just when you thought things couldn’t possibly get bigger and better, Bravo VP Andy Cohen (of Andy’s Blog fame) arrived with Sarah Jessica Parker(!). I believe that by now everyone knows that SJP is a HUGE fan of the show, but she had never met any of the designers, ever. Now, surrounded by Austin and Jay and Emmett and Daniel, it was she who seemed star-struck. And the designers were genuinely excited to meet her, too, but they remained fairly cool. I, however, can’t help myself in SJP’s presence: I babble and drool and must come across as a total ass. Luckily, she’s always gracious and adoring. And her last words were, “See you at Andy’s for the premiere!”

So, remember that the new season begins on July 12 with two back-to-back episodes: A casting special followed by the first show. It’s going to be a great season. Watch what happens!

Hi Tim! I'm glad you were able to go and get some R&R - the designers work so hard during the show but I know that you do too! Also, I'm soooo jealous of SJP - she got to meet my favorite designers! ;-)

I notice the designers this season are older than the last ones. I've been a fan since day one and I'll be watching closely to see how this affects the interactions between the designers and the judges, the models and of course each other. Keep the podcasts coming, they're my favorite way to wake up and get positive during my commute in the morning!

Much love,
Abby

Tim, I must admit that when I'm in the office under stress to #10 I say out loud.."Make it work, Make it Work...I think your a classy man and I love to hear you talk. Looking forward to season 3...

I enjoy watching the show and find the personalities and the artistic expressions of each designer to be compelling. I am excited about watching season three. My friend, Kayne Gillaspie, will compete with several other talented individuals. Each unique talent trying to reach toward the heavens and pull down a star. I am wishing for all who compete...... peace, light and love. However, I am hoping our very own "Nashville Star" will outshine the others! Wonderful Tim,

Bless you for bringing back some incredible memories of the excitement of interacting with creative people. You are the epitome of mentor and teacher!

Dear Tim, I know your lips are sealed, but was a designer really asked to leave? Leave permanently? Or...did a designer's mother stop by and gush until it was absolutely necessary to ask her to leave? Did someone have to leave to change outfits? Was the request benign or were throwing a sewing machine or chasing a competitor with scissors involved? Is it hype or horror? Restraining orders and mandatory psychological evaluation or just...what? I am on pins and needles and can hardly wait for any hint. Can you just tell me if a designer had to whip you up a Kevlar suit? Asbestos? I'm dying to know.

Tim- I am such a fan! I know you're not a judge, but maybe you could talk to Heidi. Some fairly awful stuff got through last season. It seemed like Santino was going to be in the Final come Hell or high-water. How he stayed alive after that gawd-awful skating "dress" he threw together for Sasha Cohen, I will never understand. Anyway, let's keep it about design. PR is the best show on TV.

Carry on, Tim! Project Runway (PR)is the first and only "reality" show that has interested me. I couldn't possibly wear any of the wonderful garments I've seen on the show(I am permanently pear shaped), but I love to watch the creative process and the colorful personalities. PR is cut above all the other realities. Many thanks.

Will there be a season 4 premier in December 06, as with last year's season 2 ? I aready have my designers picked out who will be cut first, can't wait for it all to begin !!!! Loyal fan....Connie

I don't know about season three. So far none of the designers have grabbed me like season one. We'll never have another Jay that's for sure and Santino was my choice for most interesting person on season two, great designer too, but so far the women seem kinda dull and the guy from Atlanta, yawn. How stock are the "characters" starting to get here? But regardless, I'll watch it through to the end. Bravo always finds a way to hook me in. :)

I would like you to know how very much I enjoy the show. You and Heidi compliment each other very well.

As a person who attended Parsons, watching the show brings back wonderful memories. You very much embody the excellence of my Professors whose teachings will always stay with me. Project Runway also demonstrates the level of dedication and heart it requires to be a student at Parsons and The New School.

Thank you & I am SO happy that season 3 begins tonight!

Hello,

Saw the show last night and it was great. Loved to see what past participants were doing. Love that Austin is designing wedding dresses. Kara Saun is a phony and loved Wendy Pepper's transformation, my mouth dropped for a minute. Wow! I hope the producers really focus on design talent more than characters as they have in the last two seasons. Look forward to seeing the designers work, a lot of it looked different. Can't wait.

Dear Tim, I love this show! I started to sew for my dolls at age 6, and made my first dress at age 8; I am still designing my own dresses, and also I knit unique sweaters - just because I love it! It is the best hobby - and it gives you the opportunity to express yourself and wear things with your own 'label'. I started to watch season 1 solo but soon my husband joined too, and he became this show's devoted fan.
When I was in New York last September I went to see Parsons - it is a new landmark for me now. Thanks for the great show - YOU MADE IT WORK! Sincerely, Raisa in Nashville.

I always look forward to your controled approach with the designers. I think it is a great idea to start the season in the summer. Kuddos to you and the others invovled with Project Runway for continuing to give the public a chance to aspire to their dreams in a industry that can seem unwelcoming to newcomers or people that may not be as fashinable as they would like (or should be).
keep up the great work.
I will be watching :)
* Maybe next season they would have to go out into the community and create for the working woman, blue collar worker, teacher's etc.
That would be interesting.

Holy WOW, Project Runway has turned me into a reality TV and a Bravo network fan! I enjoyed Season 1 and was totally enthralled with Season2. Who knew that reality television could include fashion, fabric, cat fights and music fit for a broadway show?! I can't wait to find out who I'm going to love - and hate this season. Tim Gunn, you are an incredibly classy guy and Heidi Klum is one HOT MAMA!
P.S. There are too many memorable phrases to mention, but who can forget, "I don't care if you cry, but you better cry and cut" or "it's a motherf@#ing walk-off?! Someday our grandchildren will consider this "classic television",

My God, Tim, I'm so excited about the premier I didn't sleep last night. I think the best thing over the last 2 seasons has really been seeing your personality show through. I am the proud owner of a "Free Tim Gunn" t-shirt designed by Daniel Vosovic. I love wearing it because I turned into a "Gunette" telling people to "carry on" and "make it work". PR would not be PR without you and Heidi! As one of the contestant designers said last night, "Tim Gunn, you rock!"

Tim,
I am so grateful for you cool insight and esp. the comments from you and the judges about professional portfolios and professionalism in general. I'm sick of attitude from students whose entire claim to fame is yet to be. It is also fantastic to hear your critiques, what you look for, and how you see the distinction between student work and professional maturity. I look forward to this season as I'm just hooked on the show. Make it happen.

Tim, Heidi and judges!~ Scant 40 minutes to go! PR is a great show and I am continually amazed at the talent these young people have. The judge's are pretty much always right on with their assessments of the garments. I am truly excited to see the new season start, I get up at 5a.m to get ready to go to work, but staying up to watch PR is definitely worth the power nap I take when I get home on Wednesday's so I can stay up to watch.

OMG! What fun! I really hope the producers didn't relent and let the designers have everything back in their apts. It'll serve them right for hoarding supplies. Honestly though, Tim, don't you sometimes just want to shake the designers and say, "What are you thinking? This is hideous!" I wonder how good you are by now at picking the winner and loser of a challenge. Do the judges choices always make sense to you? Clearly the viewers tonight disagreed with which garment was most unattractive and who should've gone. Love the show and your droll wit but I'm still wishing Daniel won last season.

Tim! I am so glad that you are back. You have a wonderful presence on TV - I'd love to meet you in person one day! But alas, I am an artist NOT a fashion designer. Bummer. Project Runway is the favorite show in our house and the whole family watches it! We have been HOOKED since Season 1. You and Heidi make a great team and are both a joy to watch and listen to. I have LOVED watching the entire Season 1 and 2 on reruns leading up to tonight's Season 3 show. Great show, great mix of personalities, great ideas.

Frantically I made my dinner, gathered all my goodies...remote control...lemonade...phone...in case my sister called to comment about the show....my slippers in case I needed to answer the door (I wouldn't dare answer it during the show) and waited with much anxiety for PROJECT RUNWAY this evening. Much to my delight it was the perfect FIX to my withdrawl from last seasons show. I have been watching the marathons but I have been so looking forward to the new season and you have come through again...it was a perfect premiere...innovative, charming and fun. Having Kate Spade was fun too. I have all her books. I wish I could be on the show as I am very creative but I can't sew...My late mother sewed and I inherited her innovative eye and style but when I tried to make a pair of shorts in high school one leg came out longer than the other...tee hee. However, I do have an appreciation for style, design and a natural flair and your show is my "PORN"...Excuse my french....I just love it! Also, when I feel a little low I look at your show and it cheers my soul and inspires my imagination. You are the epitomy of a gentleman and so debonair...Class can't be bought...it is innate and you certainly have it. All the contestants are fortunate to have you as their mentor...You certainly are mine! Looking forward to the next show...Lolly

I missed most of the 'Run-up to Season 3' special, but I was very happy to see Jay McC holding his own against his critics. Hi Tim--We're all so glad you are back for another season. My friends and I agree you are the star of the show! I have to say I was disappointed with who won the first challenge. Bed sheets aren't innovative! I think Michael should have won--he used an innovative material and constructed a pretty dress that reflected his personal style. Wasn't that the point of the challenge? Also, it fit very well. If there is ever another innovation challenge, I'd like to see points given to someone who "thinks out of the box" regarding their choice of material. Otherwise the viewers and contestants get the impression the judges don't truly value creativity. Looking forward to the next episode...

The new season of Project Runway is a great opportunity for Bravo to move further into advertising innovation. The show is about the business of fashion, a key element of which is consumer advertising. These types of shows represent the innovative ways in which broadcasters like Bravo are trying to reach mass market audiences, but eyeballs and click thru's alone are not all that Michael Kors and designers like him want, need or are willing to invest hard dollars in. They want sales. Designers need broadcasters to move beyond the eyeball economy:

I love this show, but please...Show us the clothes!!!

I am a huge fan of PR, but the climax of each show is the runway event and the opportunity to really check out the garments after watching an hour of drama going into their creation. Can't the producers slow it down a little, or give better camera shots of each piece? Anything to see the actual clothing! That has been the big let down each season and continues to be this season. We want to see the front, back, side, bottom, top, and all the in between. We want to check out the details. We don't need to see the faces of the designers or the judges during the runway show, we need to see the CLOTHES! That's what this show is supposed to be about!!!!

And the show wouldn't work without you Tim. You're simply amazing at what you do.

Tim - for a REAL challenge next season, why not have the designers create a piece for a non-model type? There are, after all, (I say proudly) many rich, chubby, middle-aged women who may end up their clients one day. p.s. - You really do make it work!

Enjoy the show a lot. Sometimes wonder if a designer is allowed to stay, not on merit, but for entertainment value. Can't remember her name, but the girl who did the short, poofy, decorated skirt and trashy-looking top - the same woman who could not sketch a gown for Miss USA, and whose partner had to redo her work (can't recall her name) surely has skated by twice when she should have gone. I hope she doesn't turn out to be another Wendy Pepper. Frankly, I found Wendy so unpleasant to watch I almost gave up on the show. Anyhow . . . Those are my thoughts.

anne wrote:

Hi Tim! I think your show is insulting to professional designers. To start a new line you need at least 1M not $100,000 if you are really serious. Also, I don't think it's right that you are fooling your audience into believing that the designers are making the clothes in that amount of time. Real designers are not fooled. I feel sorry for the people on the show because they are being used by BRAVO and they don't even know it. You add a glossy touch to the show however.

Weakest component of show? HEIDI !! She is very attractive - until she opens her mouth. Can't pronounce 'represent ' after how many episodes? Her 'insights' are uninformed and unoriginal. Otherwise, love to watch the designers. What fabric store do they shop at? I hope to visit the next time I'm in NYC.

Joanna wrote:

I just wanted to say that I love the program. I always wanted to be a designer but my life took a different turn, so I live vicariously through the show now! I am so envious of the designers that get a challenge and then motivate themselves to go deep inside to find the best of taste, class and a little piece of their soul to put into the materials that they get to work with. Next thing you know you get to see a bit of that designer, whether it be good or bad, but it's always exciting. It's my high for Wednesday night, I love the show. Kudos!..as Michael Kors would say .

I found PROJECT RUNWAY aggravatingly addictive! I've even watched the reruns multiple times. I've hesitated in writing because I don't like to be mean but after last night's episode - Keith needs to know that life is going to be tough for him if he continues to lie! I can't believe Vinson lasted as long as he did. He certainly seem unaware of his taste limitations. I was happy that Michael was voted the favorite. He has the best attitude and is quite skilled. I think Laura probably has the best skills - now if she can just bring in more of a variety. Jeffrey seems damaged emotionally and strikes out at others. I call his clothing style "throw-away". They are so "memorable" you couldn't wear them more than one season. I also think his construction skills were lacking. I was sorry to see Allison go. At the time I wished the judges had considered her former work (Ithought Vinson should have gone). I miss seeing Kayne's creativity. I agree he does need to modify some of his ideas. It was fun to see Angela's enthusiasm even though it was sometimes inappropriate. She said she admired Katherine Meladrino's style/clothing but she (Angela) dressed herself too ragtag to seem professional. All in all I'm enjoying the show. Thank you!
