To those of you who read the blog and also listen to the podcasts (first, thank you!), please note my episode one podcast disclaimer: I had not seen a rough cut of the show as of that recording, so all of my babble was exclusively from memory. As of this writing, I’ve seen a rough cut, my memory is jarred into position, and I’m STUNNED about all that escaped me when making that recording. I’d like to promise that it won’t happen again, but one never knows. It’s times like this when I invoke “make it work” to myself!
timsblog_designers2_320x240.jpg
Season 3 is launched! For our first challenge, Heidi announces that the source for this design is the contents of each designers’ Atlas apartment. The designers may only use the contents of their own apartment, but they may use ANY of that apartment’s contents (and they may not use things that they brought with them). They have 15 minutes to source in the apartments -- and all materials that they source must fit into a laundry bag that each designer received. I anticipated that they would simply GRAB anything and everything within reach, CRAM it all into their bag, and make material decisions in the workroom back at Parsons. For the most part, I was correct.

And also for the most part, I was quite pleased with the designs. However, issues pertaining to the fit of the clothes on the models proliferated. Fortunately, the judges were inclined to be more forgiving than less, because it was the first challenge. But listen up designers: the forgiveness is going to cease!

The divine and prolific Kate Spade is our special guest judge.

timsblog_keith_320x240.jpg
Keith wins! Keith edited his rather daunting cache of materials down to navy bed sheets and red buttons from a duvet cover. He created a halter dress with overlapping diagonal panels in the front and a fishtail in the back. The dress was beautiful and the construction laudable. The design was innovative, but I was concerned -- very concerned -- about the absence of innovation in his choice of materials. I mean, bed sheets? They’re cotton fabric, just like what he could purchase at MOOD, so what’s the challenge? I was certain that the judges would praise his design, but admonish his dull-normal material usage. Wrong. They celebrated every aspect of his work for this challenge, as demonstrated by his WIN. So: Shut up, Tim!

(Immunity comes with this win, so Keith cannot be eliminated in the next challenge.)

Do you think Jeffery will fall into the "Santino curse", as HEidi had compared him to? I don't and hopefully he'll go far!

Hi Tim, I totally agree with you about Keith's dress. Great dress, but just a length of fabric. Also loved Laura's coat and Ula's dress.see ya Linda

Hi i forgot to tell you...it made me sad to see the apartment all torn up. Linda

I personally think they made the wrong choice in removing Stacey . Jeffreys outfit was sommething a baglady would wear . She should have been given another chance I'm sure you who voted against her know that you made a BIG mistake , after seeing the show . Jeffrey has NO talent , or personality .

Dee wrote:

I honestly thought that Laura's execution was ice, but almost predictable so runner up for her is fine with me. I actually thought the little red and white dress with the built in necklaces was really eyecatching, and I thought should have won. The winner's blue dress was boring. I also thought the leather skirt number was terrific. I wanted it! The coffee filter dress was up there too.

Peggy wrote:

No Tim, you are right, the winning dress was NOT INNOVATIVE -- pretty yes, minus the distracting oversized necklaces -- can we say ugly! The judges clearly did not listen to their own challenge. But this viewer has and says to them-- You are OUT!

Katie wrote:

Tim, you are correct, Michael should have been one of the three finalists and should have WON. Talk about creative...coffee filters, but also it was extremely feminine and fit perfectly. I think we will see great things from him...

I was very dissapointed that Robert Best didn't win this challenge. His dress was beautiful and modern. I thought Sarah was right to go. Jeffery is an ambitious designer, and his ambition got the best of him. The featers on the runway show? I wanted Jeffery to stay because I knew he would make some interesting designs this season. So with sarah down, the good designers remain. My personal favorites are Alison Kelley, and ROBERT BEST!!! His dress was awesome.

THE FIRST SHOW WAS A WINNER. LOVED IT. ALTHOUGH I AM STILL DISSAPOINTED YOU FOLKS DO NOT GIVE MORE YOUNG DESIGNERS A CHANCE. THE NEW YOUNG TALENT IS COMING OUT OF COLLEGE. I ALSO THINK THAT SOMETIMES THE DESIGNERS ARE PICKED FOR PERSONALITY REASONS NOT THEIR TALENT. I FEEL A GOOD DESIGNER NEEDS TO BE MARKETABLE. SOME OF THESE DESIGNS ARE JUST NOT WHAT WOMEN WILL WEAR. THE BIG MONEY I FEEL IS IN DESIGNING FOR WOMEN WHO ARE EVERYDAY. MOTHERS, CAREER WOMEN ETC. THESE DESIGNERS ARE JUST TOO ONE NOTE.

THANKS, LINDA

Tim - I agree that Keith's dress, though well-executed, was not innovative - for that, I was torn between Laura and Robert (with a slight edge to Laura). However, am I the only one who thought Michael's dress resembled Chloe's figure-skating dress, slightly? I guess that thought came to me after viewing Michael's audition.

MadBlogger wrote:

I was impressed with Laura's coat. Not something I would wear but I enjoyed looking at it.

Paige wrote:

I loved Michael's dress. To me, he thought more "out of the box" by using materials other than the obvious (curtains, bedding). Stacey's design was cute, but boring! She didn't change the materials much. It looked like a "draping 101" project. Plus, she couldn't use the equipment.

Suzanne wrote:

I think Michaels dress was simply beautiful. He was the winner to me.

I absolutely love this seasons contestants. I feel that they are more diverse, interesting, and talented than the contestants of the previous two seasons. ALso, I love that TIm discusses aeach contestants designs. I hope he keeps that up. Bravo for season 3 of Project Runway!

Karen wrote:

Keith should NOT have won this challenge - way too boring. Robert's dress was so interesting from the front AND back - simply stunning. Laura's coat was gorgeous and different and I absolutely loved it. Michael's dress was also extremely clever. These three were the best in my opinion and I was rather surprised about the judge's decision. They picked the correct two that were the worst, but I think I would have sent Jeffrey home instead. At least with Sarah's dress, although the execution was poor, it was better than Jeffrey's mess - which was ugly beyond words.

Hi,
Great show. I would love to have seen more of the other garments. The show seemed to focus on the work of the people who ended up in the bottom 3 and the winner. We didn't get to see any of the other garments while they were being worked on, and we barely get a glance of them on the runway. There were some very interesting looking pieces that I would have liked to have seen more of.
What's with the phone in? That is kind of a spoiler while you are watching, because then you know ahead of time who is going to be in the bottom 3.
I look forward to this season, looks like alot of talent and alot of possible hissy fits and confrontations. I can't wait to see who gets asked to leave!

I loved the first episode, especially when the designers had to return to the apartments they had destroyed and sleep there amid all the mess. One thing, though---everytime Malan started speaking it made me think of Austin Powers. I expected him to say, "Yeah, baby! Oh, behave!"

I am SO excited about the season and all of the talent. I have predictions about the roles various people will assume. I am conflicted about Stacy's elimination. I think she has some talent, but it is a problem that she can't use the equipment. I simply did not like Jeffrey's dress. But he brings some of the Santino arrogance and drama, so he probably will stick around for a while. And Robert Best -- mucho talent. His current job actually seems dreamy. Finally, I also loved the coffee filter dress. Can't wait until the next episode. I hope Jeffrey will be out, but I doubt it.

Samantha Fisher wrote:

Didn't the promos say "A First" as someone will be asked to leave? Sounded like a designer broke the rules and was busted...but it didn't happen. I found the judging ODD, to say the least. The coat was magnificent and creative, as was the short white dress with red bows in the back. In terms of losing, I really thought Vincent's whole deal--dress as well as hat--was terrible. I think he got the sympathy vote--that's ok this time. Let's hear it for 401 K dumping?!

Kristin Pratt wrote:

I loved the Road to the Runway and the first episode. It was interesting to see the how much the designers took from the apartments and how little of it the actually ended up using. I think it was fabulous that they then had to return to the destroyed apartments and sleep in them! I agree that they phone-in is a SPOILER! You found out who was in the bottom three halfway through the show! I don't need an i-Pod that much.

Cyndi wrote:

I thought Michael's dress was beautiful and the most innovative. It also reminded me of Chloe's figure skating outfit, but I loved that too (thought it should have won), so that was okay with me. Keith's dress was a little boring.

I didn't think Stacey deserved to go home. I would have chosen Jeffrey.

TalentedMrWelles wrote:

Great comments Tim, I agree with most of what you said. I thought Keith's dress was beautiful, but I think Robert should have won. I HATED Vincent's fugly sack dress and that awful basket hat. He should have been Auf'd!

I too was very curious about someone being asked to leave "a first" the promos said. What happened with that?

Todd Babbitt wrote:

What a great season this will be. My only concern is that the designers are too good. WHAT too good. Yes. I can see that once the bottom four or so are dropped off, that this talent group will produce such high quality that the show will lack the usual "how could the judges keep Santino-Pepper etc...emotion". Yeah it will be thrilling to see all the fantastic and beautiful garments, and I will be glued to the set no matter what, but I wonder if this season will lack the drama of the past ones. And it is in the end all about the drama!

Derek wrote:

Dear Tim,
We love the show so much that we bought the 1st and 2nd seasons on DVD and recently signed up for cable TV so we can watch season 3. In addition, we really enjoy and learn from your interactions with the competing designers. Whenever we watch an episode, we each try and pick the winner of the design challenge (not very original, I know). For the 1st episode of season 3 last night, my boyfriend picked Laura to win and I picked Robert - but as you know, we were both wrong. Oh well, better luck next time. The show is so much fun and we both think you are terrific!

Hi Tim,
I was very disappointed that Keith's dress was the winner. It was not very innovative. I think Robert Best's dress was the best and most innovative. I also loved the coat and the coffee filter dress. I liked Stacey's dress a lot better than some of the ones that weren't voted off. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the shows!!

"Project Runway" is off to great start. I agree with Tim and Jenny that Michael should have been among the top three while I too thought of Chloe's figure skating dress. The use of coffee filters showed MIchael's creativity and perhaps ability to edit but he needs to show more original designs -- more of himself.

Tim: Congrats on the fabulous season opener. Love you, undeniably the star of the show.

Disagreed with the judges on winner: Michael's dress by far and away the most innovative and lovely. Loser deservedly out.

My money on Laura and Robert duking it out for the prize. Can't wait for next Weds!

Tim Gunn, I love you!! Thank God for your blog, or we wouldn't know your opinions and other interesting details. I agree that Michael's dress deserved much more attention from the judges, it was innovative and beautiful. I feel they chose the wrong winner, based on his limited use of materials, his dress while very nice, was very common. Robert was the winner in my eyes, that dress was stunning to look at!

Shoshanna Moser wrote:

Looks like the third season is off to a great start, but no one on Project Runway is EVER more entertaining than Tim Gunn! You really make the show sing, and are one of the major reasons many of us keep coming back.

Keith's win has to make one wonder what the judges were smoking that made them completely forget what this challenge was all about. A far better choice would have been the furry coat, or the fabulous coffee filter dress (which was not only one of the most innovative designs since Austin Scarlett's use of corn husks, but was also one of the very few dresses that was actually pretty-- albeit in a fluffy sort of way.)

I do feel, however, that everyone involved in the casting of Project Runway should be profoundly ashamed of themselves for their decision to exploit the "great TV" potential of a man clearly one Prozac away from an across-the-board breakdown.

In the last two seasons we've seen what the stress and emotional strain of taking part in Project Runway has done to strong, focused, and basically well-grounded individuals; what on earth will it do to someone like Vincent? And what excuse could there possibly be for putting him in that position? Are we really supposed to believe that this man passed the psychological evaluation referred to in your blog as one of the hurdles faced by Project Runway candidates on their way to becoming finalists?

We in the audience are well aware that in the considerations of who is cast (and then remains) on Project Runway, talent is not the only factor-- personality plays a very big part. (Santino, for example, should by all rights have been out a number of times-- and unquestionably so after the lingerie challenge-- but was kept on because his presence made the show more exciting and significantly amped-up the interaction between the designers.)

For Season 3 you've brought in several colorful types who will undoubtedly contribute a great deal to the entertainment value (if not the design quality) of the show. But Vincent should not be there; you know it, and your audience knows it. I hope that Project Runway is prepared to take responsibility for what happens to him.

That one, very disturbing factor notwithstanding, the potential for the third season promises to be the best yet, and I wish you the very best of luck.

Ooohh what a great season this is going to be. Keith should not have won - I agree with Dee - looked good - simple but where was the innovation of using various materials? I liked Michael's and Laura's - Robert is going to be definately in the top 3. His dress was stunning and unfortunately, the detail from the duvet was skipped over on the skirt. Kayne (sp?) the pagent dress designer will also be one to watch. I too was disappointed to be baited with "I'm going to have to ask you to leave" in the previews and then not see the results. I played my tape over 3 times thinking I had missed something.

Mary Ann wrote:

How could Robert not have won?!? At the very least he used more than one item to construct his dress and it was a classic design with a fresh twist. I loved it! I understand Keith's Carol Burnett/Gone with the Wind reference, but still I found no innovation in his design. I agree with the person that said Micheal's dress reminded her of Chloe's skating dress, however, I still found it to be original in it's own right and fantastic, by the way. Looking forward to the rest of the season! Later!Mary Ann

Last night's show was great! I am so glad Project Runway is back! YAY! My vote for best was MIchael - it was innovative, simple in design, well executed and looked great on the model and runway. I did like Robert's dress too except for those huge red bows on the back, I think I'd have reduced their size, :P. As for the loser, it should have been Vincent, obviously. His execution was as bad, if not worse than Stacey's and his design was atrocious! My 7 y/o could have designed that. But Stacey blew it with not using the machine - that definitely hurt the execution. Again, so glad to have Project Runway back. Love ya Tim!

Dear Tim,
I Looove the 1st show. I agree that you have more interesting designers here. You and the judges did a great job at casting them. I'd have to agree with most of the comments. Keith shouldn't have won, yes..his entire outfit had drama.., the big hair, the big neckales, but the dress is way...boring, and like you said, "it's made of cotton bedsheet!", just like regular fabric you buy at MOODS. He has so much confidence, this win just made him way...too cocky. I absolutely adore Michael's dress with those coffee filters...it's divine. Robert's was cute too...innovative and I can see the Barbie influence. Vincent cracked me up, I was in stiches watching him trying so hard to send that basket down the runaway and actually put in on his model's head. My Gosh..., I have new respect for those models, they really put up with a lot, don't they. Tim, I can't wait to see the next episode. Who on earth did you ask to leave? It looks like someone is going to get booted out before the runaway. I can't wait!!! Oh..btw, Malan creeps me out. His laugh just sends creepy crawlers on the back of my neck!! HHhhuuuuuhhhh.....

Hey Tim,

I agree the materials used for the winning dress weren't all that creative but I loved the design. I do think that there were other people who could have made it into the top three, especially the coffee filter dress. Overall, I mostly agreed with the judges' opinions. And I'm sorry Vincent's design was just plain garbage. Oh, and that awful basket he dared to call a hat. For someone who has been in the fashion business that long, I really expected more. Can't wait for the next episode. Luv Ya Tim!!!!!

I absolutely LOVED Laura's coat. Michael's comment was dead on "that's so her!". I also really liked Michael's coffee filter dress as well as Robert Best's design. Both were very stylish and were something you could see people actually wear. I was disappointed with Jeffrey's design and agree that it was just too much. However, I like that his perspective seems to be quite different than the other designers. I think his designs will add some variety to the runway which is important, because his style does appeal to a large audience that can be sometimes ignored in the fashion world. Great first show! I can't wait for future episodes!

I absolutelty LOVED the 1st episode! Kudos to Project Runway and Bravo for keeping it creative and fresh. It was hilarious watching the designers rip apart their rooms only to find it left in shambles upon their return at the end of an exhausting day!

I think this round of designers are the best yet in terms of experience...but where's the personality? Past designers such as Jay, Austin, Uncle Nick, and even Santino kept us watching and laughing...I hope the new designers' personalities can match their talent. I'll definitely be watching!

By the way...my choice for last night's winner is Michael. Thanks for not using a bedsheet or a curtain...innovation is key!

Chris wrote:

I loved Robert's dress and have been a fan of his work with Mattel/Barbie for many years. I wonder if he has left or is leaving Barbie? It seems odd that Mattel would allow him to participate in Project Runway and state he wanted to move on to producing his own line if he was still working for them. I also thought Michael's use of the coffee filters was creative and beautiful.

Traci wrote:

I have a website suggestion. Would it be possible for the website to have pictures of the rear view of the fashions as well as the front view? Many of the most engaging aspects of the designs are from the rear including the winner's, Keith's, and Robert's. I would like to be able to click on the picture of the design and get a rear view, too. Thanks for your consideration.

Jeanine Curtis wrote:

I totally agree with Tim, that although it was beautiful and well made, Keith was not very innovative in his choice of materials. Laura, on the other hand, completely WOWED me! I wish she had won. Jeffery should have been the one to eliminate. It was ugly from start to finish. And the feathers? Puh-leeze!! As far as innovation goes, Michael takes the prize... who would have thought to make a dress out of COFFEE FILTERS???? But he pulled it off beautifully. Seems to me that the judges forgot the theme of the challenge. Finally, about the phone in vote... that's a spoiler for me. To know who's in the bottom 3 before we even see what winds up on the runway takes some of the fun out of it.

First off, my husband said I must email Bravo to let them know that we are extremely grateful they are giving us another awesome season of PR so soon after the last. We have been faithful followers of the show since PR1, and make certain that no matter how busy our lives become, Wednesday at 10pm is our little date night. Thanks for that.
I was a little torn last night. I think in the end the judges got it right, but any of the three could have easily been shown the door. Malan borders on the ridiculous. I'm waiting for someone on the boards to point out that they went to high school with him in Iowa and that his accent is about as fake as Madonnas.

Great show-as always. Thank you, Bravo.

I also agree with Tim: Keith's winning design was not innovative. If this pattern continues, I predict a replay of the Season 2 episode where the final four designed a dress for Iman. Good designs, but safe and boring designs.

Another thing - I understand that it is important to create some conflict on the show by mixing more experienced designers with less experienced ones. But, it seems that some of the more experienced designers are a little TOO experienced. For example, the Matel designer talking about working with Isaac Mizrahi. Isn't part of the fun taking someone like Jay or desperate housewife Wendy and putting them in an exciting and new environment where they can blossom?

i was surprised that michael didn't make it into the top 3! his dress was so innovative...wasn't that the point? and the guy who used only a bed sheet (read: played it safe) ended up winning (and *sure* this was the first dress he ever made)? i was bummed about that...but still it was a great show! love laura's coat, too!

This is the only "reality" show I watch and a good part of the reason is Tim. I think your critiques are constructive without being mean and you certainly have a sense of humor too (the whole Santino Andre-Tim skit from Season 2 comes to mind!) I totally agree about your comments from ep 1 of season 3, but I don't think the judges saw the same things you did. I agree with the person above who said the judges forgot about the challenge - Keith's dress innovative? Not. Wearable? Definitely. Maybe that's what they were thinking. Maybe a little less of Heidi explaining the premise and the rules (we got it already) and more of the judges' analysis would help me.
It was also interesting to see what prior winners and runners-up were doing (or not doing). See ya next week.

I wondered about the "project runway first" as well, but from the looks of the next week's preview, that's when it happens ...
(Tim - I love seeing you on the show every season! Even if some of the designers drive me crazy sometimes, you're always awesome and fun to watch :) )

Have to agree with Tim and many on the site. I think you need to have contestants who make for good tv, but c'mon: The immediate focus on Mulan (is that his name? Wasn't that a Disney character?) and Jeffrey seems to imply they're gonna be here for longer than necessary. Michael's dress was great, but until I read this blog I had no idea it was made out of coffee filters. I liked it that much more. Laura and Robert....awesome. It'll be interesting to see (esp. Laura) if they can do anything else, or end up being like...damn..what's his name from seaon One.. who could/would only do couture. A good start, but careful...it's showing some cliched habits.

Loved Michael's use of the coffee filters. It was a creative use of something you wouldn't think of using. I also loved Laura's coat. The minute the model came out, I knew it was hers. I think she should have won it because she did what the task required: make something that tells who you are as a designer. We may find out later that all her designs are alike, which may not work to her advantage later on in future challenges, but I thought she won it. Also, why is there one designer on every season that doesn't know how to work the sewing machines?????

Everybody seems to think that Robert's red and white dress should have won, but I have to say the two big red bows on the back made the model look like a Christmas tree! aka: Too much!! It is shapeless and hideous, just like Laura's overly exposed sagging boobs!

I truly believe Laura should have won. This challenge was to show who the person is as a designer and I can see Laura as being a very well to do, distinguished, classy lady and her coat exemplified that. I feel she embodied what the challenge was and executed it with distinction. I look forward to seeing more of her work as well as the other designers. (I loved the outfit she was wearing when she entered Atlas, where did she get it??) I loved Michael's coffee filter dress, I was absolutely blown away when they said it was made of coffee filters. I would totally want a dress that looks like that, way to go, he should have been in the top three for innovation. Vincent's whole thing was hideous and I was in shock when he wasn't told aufweidersen, however, he seems like a genuine guy and I was happy to see him get another shot. Can't wait until next week!!!!!

It seemed obvious to me that Stacey was voted out to save some craziness for television. Her dress was beautiful and the boy short was a really sexy idea. Vince's dress was a jumble of trash. It didn't show any creativity and there didn't even seem to be any sewing involved, Jeffrey's outfit was completely outdated. That kind of messy rocker look was over YEARS ago. If Project Runway is going to start moving in a predictable pattern, it won't be any fun to watch.

No woman in her right mind would ever wear something like that! He should have been OUT!

Gotta say I was stunned when Keith won. Was not the whole point of the challenge to see what the designers could create using at least some non-traditional materials? Much like the supermarket challenge of season 1 or the flower district challenge of season 2? Keith's dress consisted entirely of, wait for it,... cotton fabric and buttons! Zero innovation. Zero use of non-traditional materials. I could have given it to him if he had at least fashioned a brooch out of a fork or something! But buttons?!

Hello, Tim - what a great bunch you have to work with. Let's see these challenges in the future - MATERNITY , PLUS SIZES & THEATRICAL COSTUMES. You can't ignore the mothers - they want to be chic and they spend money. Plus-sized women need clothes, too - not every American woman is a size 4. Costuming will definitely make the innovative skills come out. Just to mix it up - throw in a children's or men's wear challenge. Michael, Laura & Kayne are my favorites so far. Episode 1's winning dress lacked innovation but execution was nice. A little too much on the beads but they helped make it. Heidi, Tim - we love the show - carry on!

I did not see a particularly bright future for a person who could not use a sewing machine when in the future, the time-constraints become much more challenging. Besides, doesn't everyone want to see what the "crazy man" Vincent will do next? It seems as though he has one foot in the insane asylum and the other on a banana peel...

Hello Tim,
First let me say that I have watched the first two seasons MANY MANY times and couldn't wait for the third season.
Not that it means anything, but I thought that Keith's dress was darling and for what he said was his first time designing a dress, it was great, but it was basic...he used a sheet and that was about it. Oh yes..and some buttons. Where was the imagination? I expected more...as the other cast members showed with some of their designs. They had more guts to try using a variety of materials. I feel they followed the task that was given to them more than Keith did.
Robert's sweet dress, Laura's marvelous coat, and Michael's use of coffee filters were, in my opinon, excellent and followed what was given to them as the task. Even Vincent's quirky dress was more than *just a sheet*.
Keep up the great work. I look forward to Wednesday nights and reruns!

Personally... I loved Jeffery's style and the story he told in his model's showing of the outfit. Yes, there was A LOT there, but I found it a lot more creative and interesting than most. And, contrary to what Cinda said, I think he has one of the strongest and boldest personalities in the entire cast. I didn't care a whole lot for Robert's dress until I saw the bows, and then I loved it. I think he'll go very far this season, at least I'm hoping so. I think Keith's wasn't extremely innovative, but it seemed the most cohesive. I can actually picture that dress being in a store somewhere, and I loved the necklaces that he used to compliment it. Vincent should have gone. There didn't seem to be anything, in my opinion, that "worked" with his design. Auf wiedersehen! :)

Though, i suppose Keiths dress was the most easily wearable which is why he must have won.

the fact that the simple design won is a bad sign for the season. the contestants will see this as a sign to go safer than not. personaly i saw robert's dress and laura's coat as far more inovative and beautiful than keith's dress. keith also found it nessisary to accessorise while robert managed to utilise items from the appartment as accessories, and incorperated them into the dress. the discovery and use of fur in the coat on laura's part was innovative, and the fact that she made an evening coat in the first challenge was ambitious and clever. i agree with you for the most part, of course, you are the one with the degree after all.

Vincent, poor guy, I really think there's some talent there and I hope he sticks around long enough to show us. I was shocked by the winner. A sheet? So what! Stacy may have an MBA, but sewing 101 is learn to use a machine. The judges saved her a lot of time. Can you imagine the poor thing having to hand sew every piece, especially consider the time restrictions?

I agree with the whole mess that was Keith's win. Booooring! If you took away the beads, it would be a boring halter dress. It didn't even have any life to it when the model walked down the runway, and models can bring ANYTHING to life! The buttons in the back were poorly displayed and should have been a handicap instead of a strength. Just don't get it. I remember the first episode of season #2 where the girl (name escapes me) was eliminated because her dress was pretty but boring. Are these not the same judges?? My top 3 are: Robert, Michael & Kayne. Top 5 include Laura & Uli. Keith's would round up the top ten, but only because it was slightly better than Jeffrey's, Stacey's, Vincent's, Katherine's & Brad's.

I definately think Vincent had the worst design. Michael should have been asked to stay on the runway, his dress was the most innovative and pretty too.
Between Robert and Keith, Robert should have won, his dress was beautiful and used different materials. Keith's dress was nothing special, you've seen that dress a million times and he only used a bed sheet!
Although I think she would have been gone soon (for lack of sewing skills) there were worst creations than Stacey's!

That said what were the judges thinking in episode one of this season???? Keith's outfit was not innovative and I have no idea what statement it made about him as a designer.
Laura's coat was THE winning number no question about it.
The materials she used to make it were innovative and the design was all her. Even Michael Kors commented that design showed Laura's personality as a designer. I look forward to seeing other designs from her. She is definitely a contender for the top 3 if she continues to show designs like her first one.
Michael's coffee filter dress was also innovative (use of the filters were, but dress style has been done)
All in all the quaility of designers in this third season are fantastic!
What a diverse group of talented personalities.
A fun season to look forward too.

Anyway, real point here is this: I find it frustrating when the runway show begins at how FAST it goes! I want to really SEE the end results. The talk-over by the designers has become very predictable and actually takes away from time spent looking at the design. Maybe have the designer's picture inserted in a corner--picture within a picture style. My suggestion is to cut-down on some of the production footage to fit the Results in! I would suggest ALWAYS having the models by the designers--it is simply a good visual in a visual medium.

Overall, a really entertaining show. One more thing: all reality shows do this, but it's becoming OLD:
Heidi (or whomever): "Your challenge, designers, is to create a dress for Barbie."
Designer (pick any) immediately: "Heidi told us our challenge was to design a dress for Barbie."

Repetition makes it worse than watching a weather report on a local station--or a golf match, for God's sake!

Skeptical of how real Malan is? How about, where exactly is he from? Twice his answer has been, "I was born in Taiwan." I was born in Connecticut, but I don't tell people that's where I'm from. Cause I don't live there anymore. He is one strange character - I can see why TIm might have been skeptical of having him on Season 1 in the first place! But perhaps his design aesthetic and skill will overpower his sketchy personality. At minimum, he'll be a great character to watch.

Michael should have won - he used a wonderful, creative, "out of the box" approach. Didn't not using fabric as fabric count as anything in this challenge? And by the same token, hats off to Kayne for using a rubber door mat - the bouncing down the runway was fantastic. That was a thoughtful, animated design that definitely shows he's more than a sequined beauty contestant's gown designer.

It's virtually impossible to size up anyone's personality or lack thereof at this point. I definetly predict that we'll be seeing alot more of Jeffrey. People may be upset by his tatoos and appearance (how shocking for a designer!) but his design was clearly well beyond the rest of the pack and certainly was the most true to his actual asthetic. An asthetic that is evidently not only successful but was good enough to land him on the show to begin with.
I mean I know it wasn't a blue bedspread wrapped around a model with some nice red buttons but, you know...

Add my voice to the chorus of howls at Keith's win. There wasn't one innovative thing about that dress. It was pretty, yes, but it barely sneaked under the wire as a challenge solution.

Of those left on the runway at the end, I would have been thrilled to see either Laura or Robert win the challenge. They both created truly wearable outfits while getting completely into the spirit of the challenge. I adored the way Robert's dress was pre-blinged so you wouldn't have to choose jewelry to go with it, and I was crazy about the flapper line and use of mirrors on Laura's coat.

The other people I would have considered for the win were Michael and Uli. Michael's exclusive use of coffee filters worked out exquisitely, and I thought the line and color sense of Uli's dress were both fabulous. As Tim said, I could see Uli's dress on the beach, yes, but with different accessories I could see it at a fancy cocktail party, too.

I felt the right person went. Stacey's dress wasn't particularly innovative, didn't fit right, and wasn't very wearable. While Jeffrey's outfit was a hot mess, it was at least an impeccably sewn, ambitious hot mess.

All in all, my one disappointment so far with S3 was the judging of the winner of the first challenge. Reward ambition, folks! Reward those who really USE the challenge rather than skirting it.

Oh, and I hate, hate, HATE the call in vote. I want to find out who's on the chopping block when the judges call out their names. If I want an iPod, I'll go out and buy one. Spoilers make me gassy.

Hellow,
Please tell us, WHAT material was the BODY of Laura's wonderful coat made of (I didn't see it listed in "materials used"), and WHERE ever did she find it in the apartment??
And, WHY, specifically, did the judges think Keith's dress was better than Robert's, Laura's, or, for that matter, Michael's or Uli's (loved them!), especially when the challenge wasn't to make the most wearable dress? It was hard for us viewers to see...but maybe in person Keith's had more effect than appeared on the other side of the screen. Please explain, as this is a mystery to people all over the Bravo boards, too.
Merci beaucoup,

I am surprised that so many people loved Michael's dress. Very pretty, yes, but to me it seemed like something a fashion student would do for a class assignment.
I think Robert Best should have won. Keith's dress was just plain boring cloth, wearable but rather boring and not innovative in the least. Big DEAL about the buttons in the back! But I agree with Stacy's elimination. Poor fitting, lackof creativity. She could have taken those typical materials and gone wild with them.
Yeah that phone-in thing ticked me off too.

Anthony wrote:

I think the most innovative creation was Robert's. Keith's creation was nice but it was a blue material that was made into a dress and beads hanging down the model's neck. What is innovative about that? Just my opinion. I also think that Vincent should have been the one booted off! What is with the hat? Can he honestly say that that was even nice? Who would wear a basket for a hat? Just my opinion!

My diseñador preferido de la 1º temporada es: AUSTIN SCARLETT!!
2º temporada: SANTINO RICE

Estoy muy emocionada!!

P.D: Where is Andrae?

I have to agree with most - that the winning design did not follow the challenge. The most innovative use of material - Michael. The most representative of themselves as designers - Laura. Judges...you assigned the challenge - now judge the challenge given.

There's nothing new to add to this fine discussion except my kudos to TIM - again, far and away the highlight of the production. Your genuine care and concern for each designer is overwhelming, which gives credence to your comments and your insight. This is my favorite show on television - in fact it's the only show I watch. It brings my family together for an hour of fun.
My vote:
Winner: Michael
Runner Up: Laura
3rd: Robert
4th: Keith
My only complaint...those dang annoying BRAVO commercials. It's almost unbearable. It's a great channel...you don't have to sell the people watching the channel already. My fingers hurt from hitting the mute so often.
Anyway, rock on PR3. Keep it coming!

A blue sheet and ten pounds of beads???? Please! The judges need to explain what was INNOVATIVE about Keith’s rather mediocre offering. Then for Heidi to tell the poor girl who got sent home that she didn’t pick innovative materials – well, I could only roll my eyes at the hypocrisy.
The top three in my opinion, using the rules of the challenge, were Michael, Laura and Kayne.
Season one was groundbreaking. Santino distracted us from a lot of dull designs in Season 2. Now I’m concerned that the judges in this Season are just missing the point and picking what they like and ignoring the challenges. I’m giving it one more show, if the judges completely whiff again, I’m out. Thank goodness for Tim’s dead-on take of each design.
P.S. can’t wait to see Jay’s show in September! Great update on him.

I thought this was a great episode. I think my top 3 would have been Uli - i really like hers but i think she is laying low right now, Kayne's - i just liked the color scheme and how it flowed on the runway, and Laura's - i am not sure she is what PR is looking for, and I hope she doesn't become a one-note (otherwise i really like her). People seemed to like Michael's dress, but I felt as if it was just a combination of two of Chloe's dresses from last season ( Ice Skating and COYB dresses), but the coffee filters was smart. (it also kind of reminded me of Austin Scarlett's corn husk dress. I am TOO excited about this season, because there is great creativity, and I think it will just get better. I hope Katherine can 'mature' because I think she has some good things in her.

** Also note Tim, the fitting will get better because now they will know their model's size. Or at least last season it got better through episodes because the designers were aware of the measurements of the models.

No question Laura should have won. Perhaps the judges should be replaced every season. Michael and Nina always look as if there is an unpleasant odor in the room.

Hi Tim,

You rock and you're hot.
I absolutely LOVED Laura's coat, and she is fabulous. Those mommies out there could learn a thing or two from her.
I didn't think Keith deserved to win. As someone already pointed out here, you take away those beads and there's not much left. Sometimes I really don't understand those judges.
I'm lookign forward to the new episodes.
Stay hot and fabulous, Tim.

Why on earth Vincent is still there is unimaginable. He should have been the first to go.

And Malan doing his Austin Powers thing makes me queasy. Hope he doesn't last too long. He isn't fun to watch and I'm going to TIVO the episodes so that I can fast forward when he's featured. Sorry, dude, but get real.

I think Michael will win Season 3. It's just a gut feeling, but I am pulling for him. The coffee filters were incredibly creative, and his dress was pretty.

But I did like Robert's best out of the ones that made it into the top 3. The red bows were adorable.

I liked Keith's dress, too, but Robert's was better.

I hope Vincent goes home next week. He's too kooky.

I am having a very difficult time reading the print in Tim's Blog. It is almost illegible. Is it just me? Anyway, I think Michael should have been given much more attention and credit for his design and use of material. Very smart. Very out of the ordinary. Robert's dress was better than the winner's. Great show.

I agree with many of the comments made here including the fact that Keith's garment was not innovative, that the phone in scores did ruin the suspense and that it would have been nice to see some of the other designs more closely. Love the show.

Tim. I totally agree with you about Keith's dress. From cotton bed sheets to a tailored dress, not exactly a stretch. I think Robert should have won. He used a wider range of materials and created something that was very feminine, sophisticated, and subtle.

I absolutely love Project Runway, and am so glad it'd back on so soon. Episode 1 was definately a different challenge however I must admit i like the "Clothes off your back" challenge better. That better showcases how far these designers will go for fashion. The tearing up of the apartment was fun to watch however extremely wasteful. There were tons of things that were taken that I believe designers had no intention of using. The coffee filter dress was by far my favorite, it was so beautiful and the fall of the dress reminded me of Chloe's ice skating ensemble.

I feel bad for Michael. He did such a great, innovative job on the coffee filter dress and it seemed like the judges just overlooked him. I'm not sure why. I think he has great potential and I hope the judges give him more credit next time.

Hey Tim,
I think you give these contestants really good advice, and it is nice to see that, infact, this year's competitions will amount to taste. I do think it could become somewhat of an exercise for the judges to learn another perspective or point-of-view since, afterall, the only constant in fashion is change.

So glad you're back. Loved the show except for call-in. Needs to be dropped as it's a spoiler. I agree that the coffee filter dress was adorable & the coat was wonderfull. I also kinda liked the dress with the ruffle thingy down the back. How about a challenge showing clothes for older ladies. We are not all 20 somethings with a size 0 figure. Barring that , show something for short folks under 5'5". We aren't all 6 ' either.I'm really looking forward to this season to see who is going to be "the Personality". I loved Santino from PR2 & Austin & Jay from PR1. I think it just may turn out to be Melan but we'll just have to wait & see. Oh yes, I also agree that the right person went home.

Welcome back, Tim! You're my favorite part of Project Runway. I agree with two comments from other viewers: the phone-in vote promotion was an unwanted spoiler and there was not enough coverage of the designs on the runway. Looking forward to another exciting season, keep up the great work!

Stacy wrote:

I have an issue with Malan. He;s too high and mighty. Hemay be talented but his attitude has me totally turned off. And Stacey should have been given another chance, she made the best of what she had, and someone else DID use the pillow case another contestent brought with them, which I believe is against the rules, though I may be wrong. But Malan needs to shape up or get out, he's annoying, and I don't think he has the talent or the drive to make it in this show.

I respect the judges' opinions, however, the four judges we see on the weekly show do not entirely make the final decision as to which design wins. If you read the credits at the end of the show the outcome of the runway winner is also decided by the production crew. I don't know how much of an influence behind-the-scene-production has, though, certainly Heidi, Nina, Michael, and guest judge do not make 100% of the decision. Perhaps this is due to a dire need of TV personality instead of talent, who knows. This process erodes our confidence towards the judging panel and diminishes their credibility.

I take the weekly result with a grain of salt.

Jeffry's design and its slandering is something that I consider a generation gap. Jeffry created a dancepunk masterpiece in my opinion, its something that in many clubs of my generation, would have been adored. As I said though, its an issue of a generation gap. It isn't what fashion was, five years ago.

I agree that the coat ruined the overall design, but the dress itself was solid.

To state that Jeffry's dress, which I would consider was the most work done on the part of any of the designers, was reminiscant to something a bag lady would wear, you obviously didn't see Bradley's design, which looked as if you bought it at the cardboard box outside of East LA.

I completely agree with Tim though on Keith's design, it looked great, but as far as effort went, he might as well have used a store bought fabric.
