What better way is there to acknowledge our presence in Paris than to have a couture challenge? Although we can debate whether Paris continues to be the capital of fashion, it most assuredly is the capital of couture. In fact, couture -- real couture -- can only happen in France. The French government has a long list of requirements for a design house to be categorized as couture, and that list is daunting. So, are there any American designers who are true by-the-book couture designers? Well, Ralph Rucci comes as close as anyone can, but the answer is: “NO.”
At Parsons Paris the divine Catherine Malandrino, our guest host and judge in Paris, presents the new challenge to the designers: design an evening dress, the construction of which employs couture methods, including hand-sewing, embroidery, or beading, for example. We go to Montmartre, with its spectacular view over Paris. There the designers have 30 minutes to be inspired by the city views and sketch their design. Then, we’re off to shop with our budget of 300 euros (US$375). The designers quickly learn that Parisian fabric stores are very different from MOOD; specifically, they comingle fabrics for fashion and home furnishings, so one has to do a lot more digging. And the designers are given two days for this challenge.

DAGNABBIT! I was so mad when they announced Jeffrey the winner - what is wrong with these so-called 'expert' judges? Jeffrey's dress was horrible, it looked like a picnic tablecloth that a four year old haphazardly wrapped around her doll. It's only going to make Jeffrey feel like he can make more awful dresses with tacky 1970's tablecloths.

No real surprises in this episode - (Vincent gone at last, and the judges continuing to protect Michael even though his dress was just a huge mess) except for the 'teaser' at the end for the next show, where they actually let slide who the next challenge will be for (the Olsen Twins)! On purpose, or a mistake in editing?

Her dress was gorgeous. Kayne was magnificent. His attention to detail....I think the judges were really so, so wrong this time on his lovely dress. I've seen nothing like it but it was so original and glowing...better luck next time Kayne.

I really liked Santino last season. Ego? Yes. Insulting? Sometimes. But Santino sort of tripped over himself trying to be funny and his slights didn't come from a horribly mean spirit, as do Jeffrey's.
Go ahead you defenders! I enjoy translating your blogs and deciphering your typos. Coincidence? Most of Jeffrey's fans seem to be borderline illiterate.
I liked Uli's dress again, so she was robbed AGAIN. What was up with that yellow plaid nightmare? What was it supposed to be? Crap all over, hanging, who would wear it? I liked all of the other dresses better. Almost. Don't know how much longer I'll be able to stomach the ugly fashion and uglier behavior.

I am so sorry, Tim, I have to disagree with you on Uli's dress. It's the same dress she's been making all along, only the fabric has changed. She either braids the "straps" or twists fabric for the straps of a dress that comes to a "V" below the bustline, and in the back to the waist, the bodice is always the same....etc... The only thing she changed here is using a solid evening fabric instead of the normal near-shear mish-mash of prints.
I also think Laura's dress was AWFUL! Again, she is making nearly the same thing - either it's a high waist, or a plunging "V" (and if I have to see her wearing a plunging neckline again, I think I'll scream - "MY GOD WOMAN - COVER UP YOUR BOSOM FOR A CHANGE"
I loved Kayne's dress. His choice of fabrics (especially the skirt) was beautiful. Yes, he should have covered up the boning somehow, but it was still beautiful.
I just don't see what the judges see in Jeffrey's dress. I thought the use of various plaids was a big mistake. She looked like she was wearing some table cloths!
I totally agree with the judges, though, when it comes to Vincent's dress. My gosh, was he getting unconscious cues from Laura with that plunging neckline and the boobs practically falling out of the dress?? And the spirit of Angela was alive and well with that "thing" on the back!
I really liked Michael's dress, especially after he tucked in the bunny ears - that made it even better. His ruching wasn't as overdone as Malan's from the earlier competition, I thought it looked nice.

This poor woman vamped it up, but looked like she rolled out of bed with the bed still on. I thought his dress was awful, and I have liked his designs before. And although Uli continues to make her braided halter dresses, her dress was beautiful and, I think, deserved the win.
Michael - he is a class act. Not once have I heard him (except for the time he was on Angela's team and expressed fear and trembling) bash anyone else's design. He constantly focuses on his work. I like that.
Laura - she showed what she was made of this time around, too. Her dress was really stunning in Paris, but she didn't offer excuses (which we all know the judges HATE) on the runway. She didn't say that it didn't travel well, that it had looked exactly the way they were suggesting it should. She was smart enough to know there was nothing to say, and she took it on the chin.
Vincent needed to be eliminated and never should have been allowed to remain over Allison. She would have made this really interesting...

Though I didn't like Jeffrey's dress and thought the fabric was messy in the front, he put the most handwork into his design and it was innovative. I do think he deserved to win.
Uli's dress was pretty and well made, but it looked a lot like her other dresses, only in 1 color rather than a bunch.
Laura's dress was incredibly ugly and boring. She would have been out had it not been for Vincent's travesty.
Vincent deserved to be out weeks ago and finally he is. His dress was atrotious, ill fitted, and not hand made! And still he was full of himself and saying that the dress "got him off" (eww!).
Michael's dress was beautiful in the back and I think the front could have been very nice had he had more time and made some adjustments to the neckline. It was not his best work, but he tried something he had never done before.
I think the final 3 will be Jeffrey, Michael, and Uli. Kayne is too over the top and Laura is too conservative.

I loved Uli's dress and thought it was certainly the most beautiful. However, does she not know how to do ANY other silhouette? Can she NEVER make anything with sleeves? Anything with a waist that isn't Empire? Anything that doesn't have halter straps made from plaited fabric? Anything that doesn't have a low-cut back? It's a stunning look, but it seems to be the only one she knows.
My perfect challenge would involve the designers' being required to adopt one another's styles. So buttoned-up Laura would have to design one of Jeffrey's deconstructed extravaganzas, Jeffrey would have to channel his inner pageant-queen, Kayne who so loves tight construction would have to create one of Uli's neo-hippie maxis, etc.

Hello Tim and all the Bloggers
I have to say that this is the week that the judges got it 100% right. As much as Jeffrey got on my nerves in the past two weeks, he made a really beautiful dress that was a different look than what he usually does. Good for him.
Poor Michael on the other hand had a terrible night. His dress started wrong and ended wrong. Too bad about the egg hitting the outfit, but I don't think it made a real big difference. The dress looked so much better when he tucked those pieces down like the judges suggested. It looked like a different garment.
Uli made a beautiful dress also, but we've seen it before. I remember her braiding cloth before, and leaving it to flow down the back of the dress. I like Uli, but she needs to mix it up a bit more.
Vincent, Vincent, Vincent. All his taste is in his mouth. His finally leaving the show really gets me off ;-) Now that he's off the show he should be able to get a job as the spokesperson for Elmer's Glue.
Laura and Kayne, what can I say. Kayne needs to get away from the pagent wear, and Laura needs to design something for someone besides herself.
All in all, I liked this challenge and the show. The judges made the right call and now it gets very, very serious.

It would have been interesting to see if the designers could better honour the spirit of couture given more time. Still, it was a fun episode as always.

COUTURE DU JOUR
I completely disagree with the judges. I think Jeffery’s design was a colossal mess. I can find nothing attractive about it. I find his fabric choices horrific as well. I don’t understand these judges as all. I can’t help wondering what Robert would have done….
I thought Uli’s gown should have won. It was everything for which they asked. I think Uli is underappreciated. I disagree that we have seen the same thing from Uli throughout the competition thus far. I think the judges are confusing Uli’s personal style with her work. Sure, she wears similar dresses to every runway show, but I find her work to be varied and versatile.
I also liked Kayne’s effort. Yes, it was a bit showy; but I can absolutely see a social-climbing, gold-digging tart sashaying into a ballroom laced into that gown and thinking she’s the belle of the ball. I liked the asymmetry and I thought the skirt looked terrific when the models walked in it. I would have put a fox fur wrap with it and sex it up even more!
As much as I appreciate Uli, though, I have to say that if I were designing, I would design more like Laura does. I prefer the classic lines of her work and her execution is flawless every time. I thought her gown was absolutely stunning. If it harkens back to YSL, that’s fine with me. That man knew what he was doing. While I think we would all agree that the neckline could have used more fabric; I’m sure she would/could have added it if she’d had more time. Like Uli’s, I thought it looked comfortable and wearable.
How many formal events do these judges attend? Do they not understand that a woman may be on her feet for the better part of an evening and needs to look as fabulous when she leaves as when she arrives and not have her dress stepped on during the evening? She needs to be able to maneuver through a room full of people and furniture without knocking over a chair or pushing people out of the way with her skirt. She may want to dance a bit. If she’s attending a formal dinner or awards presentation, she’ll be sitting for an extended amount of time. Uli and Laura’s models could have definitely accomplished all of these things and made it look effortless.
I must say that I am glad to see Vincent go. I thought his design sense was lacking from the very start. I am amazed that he lasted as long as he did and was shocked when he won the “Everyday Woman” challenge. Uli was robbed of that one. I wish we could have seen what Allison would have done with this evening gown challenge.

Looking at every gathering of the models or individually, it's clear that Jeffrey brought something absolutely unique to the couture table. I could see the pleasure in Catherine M's eyes when she pronounced his choice of cotton fabric "audacious." And then I remembered that scene in Patton in which he quotes a French general or perhaps Napoleon: "L'audace, toujours l'audace." The French, it seems, value audacity. To me it also echoed the recyclable outfit with the faux belt, which I loved. The element of yellow - used first with sad colors, then in Paris with happy ones.
I could not see Kayne's problems with boning - and therefore I liked his outfit better than those who could. Seems like a lot of the voters have also approved of it.
I worried about Laura's staying in - but only a little. I don't know what factor cumulative good works are in the scheme of things - perhaps less than I suppose - but she ought to get the benefit of the doubt just once. That it might have resembled Yves St. Laurent's work is not such a sin. Why le tout Paris is turned out to see a retrospective of Balenciaga, and all the magazines are featuring it. What's wrong with retrospective work? Why insult someone with the notion that this fashion is dead - fashion seems more often to go into hibernation and perhaps St. Laurent is ready to be thawed again. Very "triste" about the crushed ruffles in transit, too.
Vincent committed the worst error of all - he was boring, and he certainly did not know enough French to talk himself out of that one with Mlle. M.

I think Uli should have won this challenge. Her dress was beautiful, moved like a dream and the handwork was so well done. This is the second time the judges robbed her of a legit win.
You could see the disappointment in her face, but I hope she'll shake it off. Don't worry Uli--your prints don't feel betrayed. They know you'll be back.
I just didn't get Jeffrey's dress. While I did like the fun plaid (I about fell out when he chose that...WAY out of character), I felt like his dress had too much going on. Maybe up closer you could tell better, but to me it looked way too busy. Plus it was cut too short in the front . You could almost see the model's ...pocketbook.
Speaking of busy, that Kayne is a busy bee, is he not? However, I didn't think this dress was as bad as the judges made it out to be.
The asymetrical bodice threw me off, but I liked the skirt. Kayne cracks me up. I could so see him being a talk show host.
I usually like Laura's designs. Everybody always criticizes her style for being predictable, but it's also classic and tasteful, which seems to work for Chanel. Plus her tailoring is superb.(By the way PR judges, before saying any more to the designers about bad taste, you might want to talk to your producers about the stunt they pulled last week by making the loser come to Paris. Tacky.) On this challenge however, Laura disappointed me. I wished she'd have pumped it up more--I think she lost her contention for the win this week.
Which leaves Michael. Not his best dress this week,(I was "sweatin' like a whore in church" for you too, Michael, ) but he's still the obvious winner of this season, and he deserves it. He's got great fresh style, edgy but not over the top, puts tons of thought in to his designs, and isn't obnoxious or nasty to people! SHOCKER! Has P Diddy called you up for a visit to the Hamptons yet?
Can't wait for next week.

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE JUDGES????? Jeffrey won with that uuuuggggllllyyyy yellow plaid dress????? If I ever have a need to induce vomiting, I won't need to put a finger down my throat. I'll just need to think about that dress!!!!
Uli should have won this challenge! Her gown had the best design and construction of the the lot. If I thought my plus-size figure would look good in that gown, and I could afford it, I would purchase it.
Kayne's gown had more class and style the Jeffrey's and would be more preferred by most women around the world.
Robert's gown was very good, once the "rabbit ears" were tucked down. That gave the dress a cleaner line and better symmetry.
Laura's gown was predictable. Laura, can't you do anything other than plunging necklines? Not everyone wants to show their navel to the world.
Finally, Vincent is gone. He should have been voted out during the challenge for Ms. USA. He has consistently made ho-hum dresses that require little or no imagination. My grandmother made better outfits using patterns from fabric stores.

2) Michael - thank God he is still in. And kudos for knowing something was wrong instead of being delusional like someone I will not name.
3) Laura - It *was* old. I'm old and I remember this dress. OMG just before Kors said something my husband said, "French maid run amuck?"
4) Kayne. Repeat after me. "Less is more, less is more, less is more." I love you and I love your stuff but it ain't high fashion.
5) Uli - I want to buy your line. I love your dresses - I want one.
6) Jeffrey - wonderful. Loved the plaid. loved the yellow, loved the skirt, loved the risk. If I was 35 years younger I would want to wear it.
Great episode - justice was done.

Vincent-I felt so sorry for him cause he was so happy to be in his "element" having been trained in couture. I knew it was going bad for him when he chose the brocade. It only went downhill from there. It may have helped his design if they had access to fashion tape so the front wasn't falling open, but, nothing could change the fact that his couture design had no hand work at all!! Qu'elle domage!
Laura-This was a sad entry. The dress looked so fabulous in Paris but fell so flat in the travelling. I would have packed it better, using tissue to support the ruffles so they didn't get crushed during transport, especially since they were key to the design.
Michael-First time he has disappointed me. I hope it was just a fluke, cause, I'm thinking he is the clear winner of the show. The dress would have been better if he had gotten rid of the scallops as the judges eventually suggested, but, even that would not have made a winner out of this gown.
Jeffrey-I guess I am just not cut out to judge couture. I hated this big, yellow monstrosity. I thought it was as ugly as Jeffrey...no small feat. If I saw someone wearing this get-up I would laugh LOUD and LONG!
Kayne-Again, perhaps I am a poor judge of things couture, because I really like this dress. I loved the ombre skirt, I loved the boning, I loved the beautiful hand work Kayne did... I didn't love the laces in the back being all cocked to the side, but, I could get over it.
Uli-I loved everything about this gown except the braided stuffs. The hand work was exquisite. This design should most certainly have been the winner.

My only concern about Laura's designs are - " They almost look the same " - I hope to see some more craziness or new designs from her, She's really good but I'm afraid she might get the boot out If she doesn't do anything really SPECTACULAR soon espcially now that it's down to the wire!

That dress was fun, exciting, and sexy. Congrads Jeff. Uli's was Ok, but I am sooo tired of braids. Is there nothing new in fashion. I do have to admit, she at least didn't give us the patterns. Kayne's dress was sort of interesting. It wasn't great, but it was different in a good way. It looks like his mojo is coming back. Now lets rip the Wasp Lady. Laura, that dress was a farse. I am still laughing at that collar. Bozo must be an influence in your designs. What a let down, you were stunning last week, this week you looked like a walking burp. So very happy that Vincent was out this time around, but did he just have to get in that last turn on remark with Project Runway turns me on like the whole thing was a sexual experience for him? Vincent's dress was really backwards this time and that back looked like the Miss USA challenge stitching and structure with more odd Vincent sleeves. And why, oh why did he have to take the flower that Laura also oddly had modified on the recycling challenge from Angela's rosettes or fleurchons and stick that damned thing on the back of his dress? Angela's gone, but her rosettes, fleurchons live on still if in modified form. Keep Jubilee Jumbles going because Kayne's dress this time was for the renaissance festival going to Angela's strange French art camp, so again Angela lives on in influence even though she's gone. What a miss for Michael! Did he not pay attention to Malan's dress in the Miss USA challenge and to the dangers of hand ruching? Even Jeffrey said to MIchael that he was trying to do what Malan had done. Why didn't he listen? In a way, again Angela lives on because she also didn't pay attention to Robert's Icon challenge choice of linen and that's how she went out last time. Angela is still with them in spirit influencing their designs. The designers, and yes I know it's over though many of us experience it as current as if we are there, but they needed to get Angela out of their heads and it should have been out of sight out of mind and not out of our minds on this challenge. As a poster said in Tim's last blog on Laura's suddenly much larger belly from one challenge to the other, what the heh? That's three months? No, can't be and how did she just suddenly expand? Has she been holding her breath? Maybe she knew she was pregnant before PR 3 began and was afraid to say anything for fear of not getting a place. Notice on the next episode preview that she is tearfully blaming her exhausted designs on her pregnancy, so as much as I dislike Laura's designs, maybe she should have waited until next season because her designs are getting so very tired and Neiman Marcus everyday and very well could be her hormones causing many of her attitude and design problems...

Uli's dress had that whole double strap thing that was on the Emmy's red carpet this year, which was an either love it or hate it on the straps on the after shows, so it's very much in the now. God, was Uli robbed this time. Yes, I thought that another time Jeffrey should have won, on the recyling challenge and felt that Michael won because he should have won on a couple of previous challenges or been at the top, but this time you have got to be kidding! I like some of Jeffrey's designs, but that would have made fashion police's worst dressed if someone actually wore that bed sheet dress on the red carpet. As someone said of Vincent and the home furninshing fabrics being mixed in with the clothing fabrics, same for Jeffrey. A creative chance or risk with bedsheets or tablecloth fabric? No. I have actually owned an ugly tablecloth of a close to Jeffrey's fabric pattern and a friend has some bedsheets that look similar as well. Have to disagree with Tim this time and think guest judge Richard Tyler held his tongue due to feeling pressure from the other judges' remarks. Vincent deserved to be out this time with his backwards dress top although I actually liked the heavy drapes or sofa upholstery fabric though it would have been more fitting for a jacket and not a couture evening gown. Vincent's oddball sleeves plus Laura's awful too low necklines plus Angela's rosette on the back, which I hated in that modified form on Laura's joke dress in the recycling challenge and so, yes Vincent is auf'ed and deserved it. Kayne was channeling Santino Rice this time, very overdone and over the top and I just thought of that turkey dress for the Sasha Cohen challenge when I looked at that dress and he should have taken Tim's advice and covered up that black boning because it was really distracting. Laura was influenced by Vincent this time, as the judges noticed, with a long big column of fabric ala Vincent's recycling challenge dress and really also his Miss USA challenge dress. Why the he** would Michael think he could successfully remake Malan's dress from the Miss USA challenge? What was with the bunny ears like extra breasts sticking out of Michael's dress? Loved Kors remark on Michael's dress that it looked like a dress loaned out to a celebrity and it's beautiful and it comes back and you're like what did she do, go to war in this dress? Yeah, exactly. Also, loved Michael's remark that he was sweating like a whore in church over whether he would be at the bottom. Luckily for Michael, Vincent and Laura were both boring this time and Laura did a long version of her own plunging neck dress with and Yves St. Laurent ruffle channeling Angela's bio video.

I hope she has stamina. Uli is doing it! I am impressed, she has a niche and she is very good. Kayne is fabulous! I always love his stuff even when everyone else says it is over the top. He has so much energy and I think the diagonal lacing in the back of his dress is amazing. Michael is OK, I really saw the inspiration for his design and I loved the idea, but rouching is always messy looking as far as I'm concerned. He can come back, this challenge was really above everyone's expertise, even Laura who I think is head and shoulders above everyone in construction. As for Jeff --- bad karma will get him in the end. He is everybit as kooky/weird as Angela and made almost exactly the kind of thing I could imagine her doing. And not for the first time remember the Madonna outfit? Classic Angela. Michael...my favorite. I hated to see him fail so miserably, which he knew he had. He looked embarassed, though he covered it up quite well.
Laura's is always a vintage look, but she should have found other material for the collar. Instead of black & white, perhaps color with a frenzied trim would have updated that look.
Uli's dress was beautiful but a design that wasn't all that orignal. She keeps working from the same template.

However, I am seeing lots of them making similar designs with little twists over and over.. (Laura, Jeffery and sometimes Uli among the left designers. Kayne's ups and downs are too hugh.. I don't know how he would do if he is given a chance in NY fashion week.) I got kinda bored..
Michael's design keeps changing and show he can do various things nicely. [Woops I forgot her name.. Cloe, what is the spelling? the last season winner.. I didn't like some of her fashion week designs that much.. but she showed nice variety during the season, too..]
I think unless Michael tumbled really badly he would go to the final. Send you best wishes.. and to Uli, too.
Have to say that I am glad to see Vincent "finally" (as the dearest, Tim said) goes.. (whatever in his way..) His taste is too flat (his pajama in last episode..) or too weird (his basket upside-down hat..) so good lucks to you.. but, thanksfully, not in Project Runway.
I loved Alison's matching outfits with a cute dog.. and wish she could have stayed instead of Vincent.

If Vincent actually called that dress "innovative", well dude... you should not have cashed that 401K. And Believe me...that guy doesn't want to show a collection in Bryant Park either. He would've been crushed finding out that he's the only one thinking that his dresses are the best and the greatest. His aufing now is actually the best thing that could've happened for his sake.
Relieved...is the least I could say for the outcome of this episode.

2) Michael Knight
3) Michael Knight
I can vote up to 12 times, right? :)
My honorable mentions go to:
1) Malan Brittan
2) Bonnie Dominguez
These two could have gone all the way to Olympus. Sigh.
My dishonorable mentions go to:
1) Angela
2) Bradley
...and last and DEFINITELY least,
3) Vincent
I was so happy that he was auf'd this week that I can't sleep. He should have been gone from week one, seriously. I knew he wouldn't pass up the chance to aver, "I cashed in my 401(k)" once more. Sheesh. If I had a dime for every time he said that, I wouldn't need a 401(k) myself! Plus that's just a downright insult to all the other self-employed contestants on the show. Yes, I got it! You quit your job! You are supporting your family on your retirement savings! Ok, personal Vincent rant over. Now on to the professional Vincent rant. He seems to be on an eighties time warp. Was that a shoulder pad I saw on that model?? While I suppose stuff from 20 years ago is considered by some to be "vintage", you can never go wrong channelling Nolan Miller or Norma Kamali. Instead, he channelled K-mart.

Laura's looked better in Paris but I don't know how to make lace stand up. An iron and some starch perhaps??
Kayne's looked better in New York. I thought the visible boning was interesting. Vincent's was literally a "hot mess" with all that glue. I'm glad that the producers stopped protecting him.
Uli's was gorgeous. I could see that at the Oscars or at a Parisian soiree. I'm glad Michael didn't get auf'd for his dress, and glad that Laura is still around as well.
As for Jeffrey -- ugh. The sooner he is gone, the better.

Tim, I agree with you completely about Laura. I think she is the only real designer in the group and that she is on the order of Donna Karan or Carolina Herrera. But this was not my favorite dress of hers and it unfortunately did not survive the transportation very well. However, I can not understand what you are thinking where Jeffery's dress is concerned?!? It is hideous and stupid; it looks like a bad collection of picnic tablecloths and looks every bit as "'loving hands" and "uncouture" as anything that Angela ever made. Both of his models were buried under undifferentiated panels and flaps of clashing COTTON, for God's sake. If couture means an unwearable 'runway statement' a'la John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood, then I stand corrected. I am no major fan of Ulli's, but in reality that was the only gown that was tasteful, finished and wearable after a jaunt half-way round the world.

Why is it that a rock star jet setter or a hip hop jet setter is acceptabe (and both Jeffrey and Michael did excellent work last week) but a "country" jet setter is not? Why can Laura design in the same style every week but Uli must show something different? I am truly mystified by the lack of consistent treatment the designers receive at the hands of the judges, and while I cannot "see" the construction flaws for the most part, the criticism of a garment being poorly made hasn't been used nearly to the extent it was last season. I think, at the end of the day, the judicial mantra is "The final three should be like me." IMHO

Knowing what an ass he is, I don't think I could ever buy anything he creates. He needs some serious nice lessons and a big old fashioned slap upside the head!

I agree with Jeffrey's win; he took the biggest risks with the best outcome. His innovative use of the bright yellow plaids instead of his normal goth/rock star look was refreshing. The guy obviously has a HUGE ego (what was WITH his personal vendetta against Angela?), but he has design talent and an original vision (though I don't agree with his win last week -- a rhinestone codpiece? How comfortable is THAT for traveling in?)
Laura -- a big disappointment this week. Her strength is clean, simple, classic lines, but I wish she would take more risks, because sometimes her stuff can look dowdy.
Uli -- loved it. Sure, it was a familiar silhouette for her, but she turned it up by opting out of her familiar prints and adding some very beautiful details.
Michael -- took a risk, but it didn't pay off. The dress looked better when he turned under the mouse ears covering the model's chest, but it still looked messy and unfinished. Liked his overall design, though.
Kayne -- I actually liked this dress, but I also could see how he went a little overboard. If only he had toned down some of the details, it would have been stunning.
Vincent -- oh my. This was awful. Not much more to say about that.
My favorites for the final: Uli, Michael, and Laura (if she can break out of the box a little more)

Sorry Tim, Jeffrey's gown looked more like a drugged Alice in Worderland tea party. Add a hat and its the Mad Hatter in drag. The slit up the front to the crotch is just not elegant. The Happy gown was not happy for me, on any level. Where is Jeff's taste? Oh, excuse me, we are talking about Jeff here aren't we? Taste and Jeff cannot share the same sentence...its the law!
Uli was the clear winner. Understated and elegant. Beautiful color and dimensional as the judges said. This was as close to couture as can be done in two days. (What an obscenity to those of us who love it).
Laura's design - I was afraid that the judges were going to say that her design was dated. I just saw Belle du Jour and knew exactly what her inspiration was. I was also concerned that someone was going to refer to Poirot the Clown regarding the ruffles.
Laura is wearing me out. I know what jet lag is like under normal circumstances - first class or no. Her timing to get pregnant could not be worse IF her goal is to get to the final three. She is going to have to suck it up and find a strength and inspiration from a new set of muscles.
I am a little confused about the length of the taping start to finish. Four or five episodes in, Laura has just found out she is pregnant. Then in Paris, her 'bump" was three months along. I thought the show is filmed over the course of 32 days according to Heidi in her appearance on Larry King Live a couple of weeks ago. What gives?
Speaking of raging hormones - sour grapes to Nina! Wish she had more command over the English language.

Unlike some other arrogant boogers who act like they don't deserve the occasional critique. Speaking of...
Jeffrey is an insufferable jerk. He's a Hot Topic cocktail with a twist of sour grape juice. I liked the dress, because it was a Galliano/Cavalli/McQueen knock-off layer cake; but I don't agree with the fabric being a 'departure' from his ordinarily 'dark' perspective. That plaid was suitable for any tatted up, multi-pierced punk rock girl any day. No new thing to me. He just fails to have the 'universal' quality that MK has.
Kayne's a great drag queen/ beauty pageant/gay country and western star designer. I don't know about anything more though.
Uli's dresses always look well made, fresh off the rack from the Uli store. In that same style design arena that women of nearly every body type can wear. Always flattering, but I'd like to see her make one damn pantsuit.
Laura's poirot clown gown was at least cut well.

What in the world was wrong with his dress??? It was elegant, the bodice was gorgeous, the color was so appealing, and the back was breathtaking. I can't even begin to understand. It was the prettiest dress of the bunch. You'd see that dress on the Academy Awards in a heartbeat. The asymmetry in the front was tailored and interesting. The whole critique boggles the mind. It literally made my jaw drop at how disparaging the judges were in their closed discussion. I've yet to see Uli make anything other than one dress this entire season. Michael is very talented, but this dress was a miss. Vincent's was very, poorly conceived and executed. Laura's look liked something an elderly socialite would wear (minus the plunging neckline), and Jeffrey's was definitely fresh and inventive. So, I'm still shaking my head in confusion. I was surprised when Jeffery's dress won this challenge, but on reflection I can see why it won instead of Uli's. Last weeks' win and the the departure of Angela had a very emotionally freeing effect on him and this really showed with the inspiration he used for his design (Statue of Liberty). I think this is where he got the joy, spirit, and freedom he expressed in his choice of color and fabric. This is what made his dress stand out from everything he'd done previously, and it really paid off for him.
As for Vincent, his view of what is "sophisticated" is rather twisted from what is currently acceptable. He seemed to express a double standard as well. When he designed for himself, he expressed that the comfort and simplicity of his outfit was part of what made it sophisticated. However when he designed for a model comfort and wearablity was rarely part of his consideration and yet he considered those designs "sophisticated".
Did anyone else get creeped out when he supported the design of those garments with the phrase "It really get's me off"? I'd have sent him home after the recycled material challenge.

Liked Jeffrey's outfit last challenge and believed he deserved to win, but the win this time should have been Uli's because that was an emmys type dress of this year with its double straps and Uli didn't do prints this time and proved that indeed she can do something different! Richard Tyler didn't seem to like the dress, but for some reason didn't say much about it. Editing? Felt like I was time travelling back to the late 1970's and into the 1980's watching Laura's monstrosity come down the runway, a cheap copy of Yves St. Laurent. Loved Vincent's remark on her dress "Laura made a creature of the black Lagoon dress" and yes, it did look like something out of a horror movie, a B horror movie with a low budget and not a cult classic either. Unfortunately, Nina was right and Vincent did make his dress backwards. The back should have been the front and that front would have draped beautifully in the back and not looked like a Laura low neck monstrosity. Why did he include an Angela rosette oversized on the back of that dress especially as much as Vincent despised Angela? Surely, he doesn't miss her? Jeffrey's dress would make a good tablecloth for the Jubilee Jumbles picnic. I was so happy to see Laura wearing capris and a blouse in the workroom Parsons France, but one=why suddenly is her stomach so much larger? That looks like more than 3 to 4 months. two=did she have to prove a point showing her very pregnant belly? I hated it when Demi Moore started that trend pregnant and nude on the Vanity Fair cover years back and I still hate it. Also, then Laura returned to her low cut clothing and I guess I should sympathize because she didn't bring elegant maternity wear, obviously didn't realize she would be getting that big in front that fast. Just adored what Kors said about Laura's knock off of Yves St. Laurent: "shorten it and give her a feather duster and she would look like a french maid." Finally, can't figure out why Michael copied Malan's ruching this time because he didn't rise to the challenge and could have been out the door on that dress just as Malan was on the MIss USA challenge.

A quality the departing Vincent really must develop.
As for you, Thomas, taking the lead on the postings here, no the next challenge is not going to be for the Olsen Twins! Don't be ridiculous. Perhaps at 11 pm it was hard for me to accurately analyze the fit but I liked it. And I thought Kors was out of line with his comments and should have said something once Michael told him about the eggs. Laura's dress was again something real women would wear! And, being someone who is always cold and has formal functions in the winter I thank her for adding sleeves! The collar was a bit much - she also needs to change up the colors. I'd have possibly liked it in deep navy or richer color and with some sort of subtle sheen. Uli - pretty but really, kind of boring. Hated the color - many women can't wear that grayish lavender - too draining. Bye Vince - it was fun. Next week looks interesting. The only dress they really previewed is Laura and I'm kinda intrigued by the black lace...

Last week Jeffery obtained a win with his jeweled crotch (not attractive.) This week he gets a win with a dress open to the crotch of his model (vulgar and not attractive.) Anyone can go out and cut up cloth, sew it in all directions and drape it in different lengths. That does not make it attractive or fashionable. The Runway producers and "so called judges" are setting the bar at the very lowest by rewarding the vulgarity and boorishness of Jeffery. All of the other dresses were much more stylish and beautiful than Jeffery's and Uli's dress was especially beautiful in style and color. It is a real shame Project Runway has sunk so low. I will not watch the program again. It is a waste of time when style and attractiveness is not rewarded.
