Mark Rios: Can We Really Work Together?

March 7, 2007

It was great being the guest judge for this week's episode of "Top Design." Being able to see the energy of the talented contestants and being among friends with great style and wit like Kelly, Margaret, Jonathan and Todd.

It's always tough to agree on design. It's even tougher to take a bunch of competitive, talented designers, put them all together and expect them to pull off a design that really hangs together. The results for some were to do their own thing, while others struggled to work together and be true to the big idea.

The hits for me were the inventive use of the space, particularly the stage area with reversible curtains and all the things the kids would need to put on a show. The color and the storage ideas fell short due to lack of time and not getting it all together.

The best designer we saw had strong ideas, but not a huge ego. The ego got in the way for a few contestant.

I'm really excited to see who finally wins.

Mark,

I wish we could have seen more of your comments about presenting the storage. I find myself disagreeing with you, and honestly I'm questioning my own reaction (although I've already slammed you a bit in a comment about Carisa, so I should take that back.) I really must learn to read all the blogs before writing any responses!

So again, my frustration clearly lies with the editing and the time constraints that do not show more of the guest judge's comments.

Their raised stage with reversible curtains was smaller than the one that my friends and I had when we were children, but still a good idea. Ours had bed sheets for curtains and pushpins and also those long strings of colored see 'thru' plastic beads so popular in the seventies, but was a whole basement room. The color was requested by the client for those stage drapes, but I wasn't in love with that purply color. Liked the idea of the stage, but in a garage? Hope that the garage is aired out before they use it due to all the exhaust from the SUV. Would have really liked to see the designers have a couple of more days to do this challenge so that they could have done a more thorough and complete job with more innovation.

We want your blog comments! We will read and approve them as soon as we can, but sometimes they can take a little while to show up online. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Keep it clean. You're a Bravo fan, you know better words than most TV audiences.
  2. Avoid using ALL CAPS! (It’s like screaming...)
  3. We don't post email addresses or phone numbers.
  4. Have a good time. We love that you love the blogs.
