Mr. Colicchio was the surprise guest judge on "Top Design," and the challenge was a perfect fit for the culinary star: design a chef's table. Unfortunately for us in the Guest Judge Blog realm, Mr. Colicchio is busy prepping for "Top Chef 3" which will return to Bravo later this summer.
So for fans of "Top Design," check out the other blogs. (The Assistant's is hilarious, and Margaret's is always so insightful.)
And for fans of "Top Chef," check back at BravoTV.com often for announcements regarding the premier of "Top Chef 3."

I love the cross-promotion, having the judges from one reality tv show on another one. I have a suggestion - how about having a design challenge for the Top Design contestants on Top Chef? The challenge where the contestants start a restaurant from the ground up would be a perfect fit.

I was so glad to watch Michael stand up to the rotten and divisive question and refuse to answer it. That question was only meant to stir the pot and to create hard feelings and I wish they would have gone to Michael first. Then it would of been interesting to see if the others would of followed suit. Just waiting for the day that one of these contestants on any of these reality shows just blows a gasket and lets the judges have it. Now there would be some real drama.

Well I'm sorry Tom decided not to give us his take. Judging from comments in the other blogs, many viewers don't understand what this room was supposed to be all about.
And Michael and Carissa could use a little help with that too.

Tom, I love you. I love your charisma. I love your style! Why are you married???? ;)
Anyhow, it was a refresher to see Chef Collichio as a guest judge - it brought back all the familiarity and good feelings, and it returned to what it is I really love about Bravo reality/competition shows -- great people. It starts with great people. Michael was a strong character, and now that he is gone, I will not be watching Top Design anymore. The results were great with Project Runway and Top Chef, but I have to wonder who hand-picked this new group of people, 'cause they are hardly the characters I want to sit down and watch. So, alas, with nothing else on television late night and my habit of completing class assignments with TV on (I'm finishing my B.A.), although I am not watching every moment, I have been leaving the Bravo channel on when Top Design airs. No more. Please pick some intersting people next time - like Michael. He was a good kid. Stop ostricizing people because they hold to their beliefs and opinions - it's a TV show, not a social clique! Tom, can you select the next set of contestants for the new one? I trust you know what good character is all about... (By the way, producers, good job with Work Out. That show is the best fun and drama I have seen since the first season of MTV's Real World!)

Boots: if a designer is not willing to offer a critique on another's design, if they can't take criticism from others, especially another designer, they simply won't get very far in the business. That's just a fact, and the reason for the question. These people are supposed to have a "critical eye" and have good judgement for all things interior. If they are unable or unwilling to express their thoughts - could be they have poor judgement, poor eye.
Which in Michael's case appears to be the case.
Michael didn't "stand up"- he crumpled under the weight of his incompetence and conceit, that has been on display from Day 1.

When the mystery chef was described, I knew it could only be Tom. Mostly, I figured this out because, after all, this is Bravo, Tom is used to being a judge, and it just made sense. What amazes me is that no one of the 5 figured it out.

Rachel,
Yes, its a TV show. And the contestants are JUDGED on many levels. Michael is out because in the opinion of the JUDGES he didn't deliver. That's life, that's the show.
So you quit watching because your guy is out. Ok, that's your decision. And the judges made theirs.

What a pleasant surprise to see Carissa's "never-ending" banquet bench. The personality dynamics, dysfunction, and drama are a big empty space for this viewer so I was so happy to see that one designer introduced one element that is so needed in chef's table rooms in this country. Maybe a bit long, but absolutely necessary for this type of dining experience. The balance of her design didn't grab me, yetI have experienced at least two dozen different chef's tables and have yearned to be able to rise from the table, remain in the room and sit elsewhere for an intimate conversation or just to take in a different view of the experience. A common desire experienced by so many diners. Guests don't always want to run out to the lobby to stretch their legs, it breaks the spell. It does not distract from the presentation, but rather enhances the two plus hour epicurian evening with consideration for the guests' comfort. Chefs and designers, please take note. Give us something more than a table, chairs, and a well-designed room. A litle respite is appreciated from a gracious host.

I usually looked forward to Tom's comments. He always provided thoughtful wisdom and pertinent anecdotes to the project at hand (on TC)... What a pity that he could not get off his high horse long enough to supply a few sentences of his informed opinion. Certainly the rest of the guest judges have busy lives and projects to complete. Yet they all managed to spare a few minutes to add their 2 cents. Tom, we missed your input, really!!!
