Karen and Letting Go

December 6, 2007

veronica_102_320x240.jpg

If you look up the definition of "hard work" in the dictionary, there's a picture of Karen right there. And some people think that they know everything. And every single thing was a fight. There was a certain paranoia: "these people don't know me, they don't know anything about me, how can they help me?" And there was a big part of her, no matter what you said, she felt victimized. Hard to win. She was in love with herself and her life when she was 21. So, she wanted to dress that way.

In this episode, we see Karen getting fitted for a bra in New York, but there are independent lingerie shops everywhere. They also have fitters in Victoria's Secret.

I think that when she went to Bill Blass, and when she went from beast to beautiful, then she really started to trust Tim. She and I never connected.

Probably because you called what she was wearing slutty. Plus, they said in the show that she really had no women friends so she probably didn't know how to have a woman friend and was uncomfortable with you. Don't get me wrong, I agree her clothes were slutty and all she needed was the stripper pole.

The fact that you now say she went from "beast to beautiful"...I'm sure your nasty attitude was loud and clear no matter what you said to, or did with, her.

She was terrible; that's all there is to it. She came around at the end when she FINALLY saw that you and Tim were just trying to help her. You both did a magnificent job with her, but boy, talk about an uphill climb. I was screaming at the television, for pete's sake.

Veronica I have to know who made your black jacket for this episode. My wife absolutely loved it and I have been scratching my head over what to get her for Christmas this year. Let us know!

She was a hard case because she was doing it for someone else's reasons, not her own. She wanted to please her husband and especially their daughter. She was happy "being sexy"~(but she wasn't looking sexy, she was looking desperate and older)
it was a hard episode to watch, not enjoyable. She annoyed me, and the episode was tense, so Miss Webb's comments are not surprising.

Veronica - don't feel bad about "not connecting" with Karen. Even her sister said that she had a hard time hanging out with her, and wasn't surprised that she didn't have female friends. Karen had such a skewered perception of herself and who she was supposed to be - and probably pretty used to feeling rejected by women her own age - that establishing that kind of a close rapport, even in a working relationship, with a woman is a strange new ball game for her. And you had a lousy task - to try to get her to face up to the fact that her fashion sense was too much vulgar and not enough grown-up! I think you did a great job - good luck to you in the future -

Veronica wasn't the only one who used the word slut or slutty - I don't think I've ever heard it used so much in my life in the span one hour, and I think that if Karen's daughter knew the word she would have used it, too. What a great episode. I'm so sad that it was the last one of the season. Since when does a season have so few episodes?

Veronica wasn't the one who called what Karen was wearing "slutty"; tim did the honors and he was right, although i was taken aback by the language myself. this show really needs veronica; she is the BEST foil to tim EVER. her deadpan, seen-it-all attitude sets off tim's know-it-all attitude perfectly. karen was absolutely crazy and the team was able to put her where she needed to be. this was the hardest challenge so far. it's just a shame the show doesn't reach beyond new york and the outer regions; there are people all across america screaming for makeovers!!

I really don't like your show. Doubt you'll read this, but no matter. Basically, it's horrifying that you humiliate people by "airing their laundry" - a.k.a. showing off their underwear drawers - on national TV. There's a line that shouldn't be crossed, and Stacy and Clinton of "What Not To Wear" don't cross it - you do.

Where could I find that Bill Blass dress on Karen show?? Loved it.

Its funny we live in a age of putting it all out there for the 15 minutes or the free stuff so those who sign on for Tim's contract know what that means, underwear drawer and all. There has not been one bad transformation. Make over shows are meant to make over so don't be surprised when your clothes are not liked and your hair needs a good cut. If you have it together your whole family would not show up at the end toasting the improvement. Say thank you and for God's sake enjoy the ride.

I don't think your attitude was out of line. Someone had to tell her that she was dressing too young for her age, and that takes courage to do.

I think it's a simple case of blaming the messenger for bringing the message, and you were that messenger.

I think you did the right thing, and I for one applaud your courage.

Perhaps in time Karen will come around to appreciate your honesty.

If she doesn't, that's not on you.

veronica.. i didnt like how you wore the PLO kafir as a scarf.. an Arab head scarf has many religious and political connotations, and has no place in "fashion" it is disrespectful to both supporters and haters. which ever way you look at it. i dont think a cardinals skull cap ( or jewish one) would ever become fashionable... this is in the same vein as hipsters wearing che tee shirts.. doubtful that they even know who che was. while you wear the scarf do you even know what it represents.. Arafat wore the black and white kafir..do you know who Arafat was.. i do not mean to insult you or make you feel bad.. i do think your usually fashionable and beautiful.

Her chosen look aside, Karen dressed for men, not women; on some level she may have viewed a beautiful woman as a potential threat, perhaps without even realizing it. (Remember, women neighbors and associates didn't like her.) But I have an unrelated question, and wonder whether anyone else finds this troublesome. On every makeover show I've seen, naturally curly hair is beaten into flattened submission. Why? If the intention is to show a woman's natural attributes to their best advantage, why is her curly hair styled straight? In addition to the indignity of this flattening (why don't they just change her eye color while they're at it?), the straight style is nearly impossible to maintain -- step out into a humid day or a rain shower, and the curls spring back. Where are the stylists who know how to cut and style curly hair properly? Now *this* would be a respectful makeover.

Does anyone remember the name of the bra store they visit in NYC in this episode?

I've noticed there are a lot of people who sign up to be on various makeover shows who just fight with the hosts. Why do people sign up for this or agree to be on the show if they are just going to fight? Anyways, I am really impressed with the way the situations are handeled; I get so annoyed just listening to the guests companin and argue while watching shows, but I love it!
