New year, new you! With 2017 in full swing, it’s time to say adieu to some of last year’s biggest (and baddest) Instagram travel trends. From over-the-top swan floats (even, or especially, if you're Justin Bieber) to breakfast-for-one shots that show enough food to feed a family of five (which you're not really eating in that bikini and you know it), here are 10 posting cliches travelers need to stop right now. #Over.
1. The prickly pineapple shot
We kind of thought the obligatory pineapple shot would have run its course by 2017 but hey, here’s to hoping for the future! Granted, Shay Mitchell looks absolutely adorable in her version of the shot but who really carries a pineapple around with them on vacation? So, the next time you’re tempted to pose with this prickly fruit, order a piña colada instead and forget all about the tired and forced trend.
2. The totally unrealistic traveling outfit shot
Sorry, but unless you’re Gigi Hadid and/or flying private, this head-to-toe look is a bad idea for long-haul flights. Sure, there’s definitely a psychology behind dressing up in hopes of getting upgraded but we’re not sure leather laceups will do the trick. (Or will they?) Whoever says sweatpants are a major no-no have obviously never flown 15 hours in coach.
3. The look-at-my-cute-pool-floatie shot
Everyone from Taylor Swift and her squad to the Kardashian klan has been touting these larger-than-life floats across Instagram and while they certainly do look comfy — getting that perfect shot on a floatie can be risky, too. You've been warned.
4. The I-woke-up-like-this breakfast shot
Ha, no you didn't. There’s no denying that breakfast in bed is a dream come true any day of the week but there’s actually a lot of effort that goes into these shots. These Instagrammers might look glam and all... but we’re guessing their food is probably cold and inedible by the time they snap the perfect shot. Let no pancake go to waste... especially on vacay!
5. The picture-on-picture shot
There's definitely an art to this trend that many who try it just don’t achieve. The original Polaroid pictures were all about living in the moment and not caring all that much about photo quality, so these picture-perfect shots kind of defeat the purpose. Next time, just show us the entire view.
6. The wind-in-your-hair shot
We love you, Tay Tay, but this shot is a little too serious, even for you. When it comes travel, we prefer living in the moment — with all of its rugged nature and glorious food options — to outfit gazing. If you’re feeling tempted to show off your beach bod, try not to try so hard. (Or at least try not to look like you're trying so hard.)
7. The kissy-face bikini shot
This look can be especially awkward for the non-supermodels among us. Let your beach bod speak for itself without announcing it quite so overtly... unless, like Bella, you're literally paid to do it.
8. The squad shot
Taylor Swift's feed strikes again! Instagram saw all kinds of jump shots in 2016, from beds to beaches. And while they are cute, it's pretty clear just how posed and scripted they really are. Think about it: How many tries did it take you and your bestie to get that perfect jump shot? Then again, Kourtney and her pals sure make it look fun, even when they’re failing miserably.
9. The guilty-as-charged shot
What happens on Instagram stays on Instagram, even if you try to delete the evidence. The “oops, we did it again” shot happens when celebs, bloggers, and influencers post photos of themselves doing something technically not allowed and in some cases legit illegal — like climbing the Pyramids of Giza or, in Vanessa Hudgens’ case, vandalizing a national forest.
10. The too-good-to-be-true packing shot
It’s fun to make like packing is this effortless experience when in reality it’s anything but. Usually, you're down to the wire throwing clothes into your suitcase while trying to consolidate cosmetics into carry-on tubes. But OK: We admit, the vignettes can be cute and inspiring... even if totally staged.
