4 Tropical Zika-Free Babymoon Ideas for Expecting Mamas
Celebrate an early Mother's Day — without danger to baby — in these Zika-free tropical spots.
From Brazil to Mexico, the Caribbean, and even the American territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the spread of the Zika virus has been swift and — especially for mamas-to-be — worrying. Pregnant women have been specifically advised not to travel to some countries, and are cautiously avoiding even more. If you're worried about where there is left to spend your babymoon, without having to travel too far, keep up to date with the latest information from the CDC and consider one of the following (still way fabulous!) options.
Not only is Hawaii Zika free, but you won't even need to pack your passport. And for west coasters, the flight time hovers around just five hours. Set amongst lush tropical gardens on the southernmost point of the island, the blissful Ko’a Kea Hotel & Resort at Poipu Beach offers peace and quiet, great seafood restaurants, and an indulgent spa. Of course, all of the far-flung, isolated Hawaiian islands are currently well beyond the reach of the Zika virus, so also consider making like Marisa Miller and Hilary Duff by spending some romantic time on Maui or the Big Island.
2Sunset Key, Florida
Even closer to home for those on the east coast, Sunset Key is a privately owned island a quick boat ride from Key West. You can get a taste of the private island life by booking a stay at one of the Sunset Key Cottages, run by Westin. Treat yourself with a treatment at the serene palm tree and orchid-filled spa, then enjoy a romantic sunset with mocktail in hand from the comfort of your private beach.
Hard to believe that the pink sand beaches and cerulean waters of Bermuda are just a two-hour flight from New York City — that's quicker than some subways rides! Check into the glamorous cliffside Reefs Hotel and Club, then rent a scooter to check out the island's sights or take a cruise out on the crystal clear waters. You might need to book a return visit post-baby so you can indulgence in a few glasses of the island's signature Dark 'n' Stormys.
With confirmed cases of Zika being reported in Fiji and American Samoa, it seems that even the remote Pacific islands are off the table for concerned pregnant travelers. So far, however, the U.S. territory of Guam is Zika free. And if you're looking for a babymoon filled with beach time and (duty-free!) shopping, this island just might hit the spot. On Tumon Bay, all rooms at the Outrigger Guam offer views over the sparkling turquoise waters and the resort is a moderate hike to the intensely romantic lookout point at Two Lovers Point. From Los Angeles, it's a long flight to Guam — but you can always extend your layover and combine your tropical getaway with an urban adventure in Tokyo.
