Serena Williams posed Demi Moore-style for the latest cover of Vanity Fair, in an Annie Leibovitz shoot, where she says, “I don't think my story is over yet.”
The tennis champ is more than six months pregnant, but already plans to be swinging her tennis racket as early as January.
The 35-year-old Serena will give birth this fall and wed fiancé and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. She talked about finding out she was pregnant (surprise!) after feeling off a week before the the Australian Open in January.
A friend suggested she may be preggers, and purchased a pregnancy test for her so Serena could keep it a secret. After she took the test, she immediately forgot about it then went back and checked it, saying she “did a double take and my heart dropped. Like literally it dropped.”
“Oh my God, this can't be—I've got to play a tournament. How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon (her third straight) this year,” Serena says.
Her friend went to buy five more pregnancy tests—when Serena took them, they all showed positive. She then called Alexis and told him to fly to Melbourne earlier than he was scheduled to. Worried, he flew out of San Francisco immediately. When he landed in Australia, Serena passed him a paper bag with all six positive pregnant tests.
“It just doesn't seem real. I don't know why. Am I having a baby?” she said.
Now, she laughs, “I don't know what to do with a baby.”
“I have nothing … I've done absolutely nothing for the baby room,” Serena says, adding that Alexis “is earnestly preparing and already has a tip jar he puts money into whenever he uses profanity so he won't utter it around the baby.”
The duo met at the Cavalieri Hotel in Rome in May 2015. Alexis didn’t tell her that night that he had never watched tennis in his life, and Serena pretended to know what Reddit was.
