Are you lusting after a beach vacation — but ruling out places left and right over fears about Zika? Maybe you’re pregnant, nursing, or hoping to become pregnant one day (we still don't know infection might impact future pregnancies) or maybe you’re just a person who are worried about spreading it. Well — though they are dwindling fast — there are still some safe places out there with sandy beaches and sunny skies and no Zika awaiting you. For instance:
1. Hawaii's Big Island
Hawaii’s Big Island is a sight to behold. Towering lush scenery, volcanoes, black sand beaches, crashing waves, fresh fruit growing everywhere, spectacular wildlife, and Hawaii’s famously laid-back culture are just a few of the reasons why travelers pine for a visit to the Big Island. And we can now add “no Zika” to the list of Hawaii attractions.
For a lot of people based in the U.S., plane tickets to Bermuda are cheaper than tickets to Hawaii, which is just the beginning of the bonuses hidden in a trip to this tropical paradise. There’s no reported Zika there at this time. Sunbathe, hike, swim, or indulge in a seaside massage while taking the (worry-free) trip of a lifetime to Bermuda.
3. Turks and Caicos
This archipelago of a destination will scratch your Caribbean getaway itch without giving you Zika anxiety. Like so many other Caribbean spots, life just moves at a different — and gloriously slower — pace here. Float in the warm sea waters while relinquishing your back-home cares and then partake in local food culture at the Thursday night fish fry.
4. Catalina Island
Just a boat-ride away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, Catalina Island beckons those who want to relax. It’s a rocky island with a population of roughly 4,000, generally temperate weather, great hiking, a zip line attraction, Art Deco history, and incredible wildlife. And, oh yeah: no Zika.
5. St. Kitts
This West Indies pair of islands is what dreams are made of. The scenery is surreal and the cultural offerings are plenty. Food is fresh and the beaches are waiting for you (as is that book you’ve been meaning to start reading). There aren’t any official Zika warnings for St. Kitts currently, so it’s a great pick for a vacation this year.
6. Outer Banks
North Carolina’s swath of beach known as Outer Banks is a vacation destination for people within a 10-hour radius (and much farther) because it’s gorgeous. It’s a superb place to catch a sunrise, chill by the ocean, and indulge in the local cuisine.
7. The Hamptons
There’s still time left to squeeze a bit more summery vibe out of the Hamptons, if you’re inclined. There’s no Zika and plenty of choice food and drink options, luxe accommodations and services, and lovely views to choose from for your trip.
