7 Pro Rules For Adding Sparkle to Your Holiday Style

We sought guidance from fashion pros who know.

Here’s the thing about sparkle, done right: you can gracefully glimmer like Beyoncé at the Grammys. Sparkle done wrong on the other hand, can leave you looking like the naughty love child of Lady Gaga and a disco ball.

So how do you add just the right amount of sparkle over the holidays? “The trick to avoid the stepped-out-of-a-nightclub look is to pair the sparkle with a more casual muted piece. Contrast is the key” according to Karlee Andrews, Seller Community Manager at Jane.

And while you’re at it:

1.  Nail It

If you’re not normally a glitter person, start with your manicure. CND Education ambassadors, Nataliya Al-ta'ai and Kristina Saindon say that during the holiday season you can go as crazy as you want with a super sparkly nail. They both agree that the easiest way to keep a festive manicure all season is with ombré design which “will give you a chance to wear two to three shades at the same time, going from lighter to darker with the ability to choose how dark or light you want to go.” And during holiday season, no amount of glitter on your nails is too much. And you can keep adding your favorite nail art to a few nails instead of all ten, or polish one or two nails a different color or apply glitter to a section of the nail or entire nail. Or you can head to the drug store and pick up Kiss Polish Pops for an instant party mani.

2.  Bling it On

Combining a few trends simultaneously is a great idea during the holidays when over the top is a matter of course according to a representative for Dana Bronfman jewelry. Wear a rose colored accent with a sparkly center point. Armitron’s Rose Gold Tone Watch has a single diamond accent at the 12:00 o’clock hour. Or make like a Real Housewife and layer on diamond accented rings, bracelets and chokers with anything from jeans to a full out ball gown.  Dana Bronfman creates custom versions of her designs so you can go for a one-of-a-kind look. At the Accessories Council holiday preview event this year, the Judith Leiber Swarovski Crystal accented pill boxes got the most oohs and aahs of anything there.

3.  A Sparkly Statement Piece

If you really love sparkling during the holidays you can invest in something that isn’t much of an investment. Sequin pants or leggings won’t break the bank and look amazing with jackets, turtlenecks, t-shirts or tunics or even under a poofy dress. Andrews says “Sequin pants are the perfect statement piece to wow your co-workers at the holiday party. Pair with a classic pair of heels, a turtleneck and blazer for that business meets fabulous look. Spice things up for date night and pair with a simple chambray button-up and fur-vest combo.” Meanwhile, sparkling shoe clips can transform even the most basic pumps into holiday happy shoes.

4.  Diamond Dust

If you like the idea of sparkle more than sparkle itself, you can just dust on a bit of shimmer in your hair according to celebrity hair stylist Richard Mannah. Diamond Dust from label.m is infused with real black and white diamond particles. Use the luxurious body lotion for extremely understated shimmer or the leave in crème mist for a subtle effect.  Etsy has loads of sparkly barrettes to enhance your party updo.

5.  Low-Maintenance Shine

If all day primping isn’t your thing, you can fake the sparkly effect and make like MacGyver rebooted with a single product – lip balm. The new eos Shimmer Lip Sphere comes in Pearl and Sheer Pink and can be used as an eye shadow highlighter along brow bone or on the inner corner of your eyes (but avoid getting near your eyes!) The product can also be used as a blush tint or highlighter, and applied on cheekbones, collarbones, or calves. You’ll be the prettiest (and laziest) bomb dot com at your holiday events.

6.  Stick-On Shimmer

If you’re more of a DIY person, you can jazz up your LBD for a last minute party with some quick sticky fixes. The DIY experts at Paper Mart suggest adding a strip of glitter ribbon to your clothes with fashion tape, or a layer of sparkling tulle over a dull skirt for instant holiday cheer.

7 .  At-Home Oomph

If you’re hosting over the holidays and want to bring the bling to the party, the style experts over at the Accessories Council said that you don’t have to limit the sparkle to yourself, but can bling up the holiday table as well. Add a glittery table runner or gold chargers or trays to the festivities. Edie Parker Confetti Coasters are handmade in America, and make even an ordinary cocktail party a whole lot sparklier!
