- Andy Cohen offers behind-the-scenes scoop on the NJ reunion, and what he really thought of Joe's gay comment.
I want to get into the reunion show ... but first let me remind you that tonight is a brand new Top Chef Masters featuring a French chef who blows his stack. It's a fun one!
I just came from The TODAY Show where I was on with Hoda and Kathie Lee playing "Who Knew" about reality TV. Kathie Lee is supernice and superstrawberryblond and I would like to formally retract all the hatey stuff I said about her in the '80s. Hoda is fantastic and looooves her Housewives. It was a fun segment.
So last night I went to some OUT Magazine party at Stonewall, which I thought would be fun given that it's Gay Pride Week and that's the epicenter of the gay rights movement. And because Lady Bunny was DJing. Well, Bunny had a sore throat and a hurt ankle and kind of disappeared, and the party kind of took it's cue from Bunny's cankle. It wasn't as amazing as Stonewall itself, let me put it that way. (Few things are, really.)
Speaking of gay pride, let me get to my (I know it was SHOCKING) self-outing last night and the "offensive" comment in question. I am getting a lot of e-mails saying that I have no sense of humor, that the remark was not offensive, and that I am being hyperpolitical.
First of all, I think the debate itself is valuable, and that's one of the reasons I'm glad we kept this dialogue in the show. To reiterate, I do not think Joe made the comment out of hate or disgust. I think he was joking around and meant nothing by it. I just had to point out that it's offensive to some people (and me) to use the term "gay" as a synonym for "stupid." Save Danielle, no one in the room seemed onboard with even the remote possibility that this might not be Kosher.

I agree and am glad you called her out on Joe's using the word "gay' in a derogatory way. I watched the show and I agree that I don't think he meant any malice but I am tired of hearing him and others use "gay" when they don't like something. I hear it alot with young kids who want to tease each other--they say "that's so gay" or 'you're so gay". I correct kids who I hear saying that and explain to them that it is not nice nor is it appropriate because being "gay" should not be considered such a negative thing. It is not. And just because you know and may like gay people, and understand the difference between using it in a malicious way and an innocent way, it does not give you a license to use it freely. Just find a different word that doesn't classify a whole group of people as bad.

Well, as a gay man who was initially afraid to come out when I was younger because of the way that "gay" was used and vilified and hated - I didn't like when Joe used the word. And, I find it disgusting how Caroline and T-Bag tried to gloss it over.
For Caroline to get so upset about the Soprano stereotypes a bit later in the show but then try to gloss over something that hurts other people, It reinforced for me what I had told a relative that told me they were "just joking" when they made some comments about "gay" that I didn't like... I said, "Don't tell me what hurts my feelings and what should or should not. You tell me something that hurts you and how would you like me to dismiss it without trying to understand and RESPECT why you feel hurt about something?"
To justify and laugh off and a comment and then get offended when people bring up something else (which I also thought was an ethnic stereotype and WRONG), is a damn double standard.
Caroline likes to come across as real but I feel she is a phony hard ass that should grow up.

LOVE LOVE LOVE you, Andy!! I am an Italian-American woman from New Jersey and I am in total agreement with posters here. Is almost SHAMEFUL the way these women acted and the 'gay' comment EXTREMELY offensive.
The representation of 'REAL" Housewives from New Jersey is horrible and of our PROUD Italian-American community even worse. We (most of us at least) have been brought up to be STRONG, INTELLIGENT, KIND women and to fend for ourselves NEVER totally depending on our husbands for financial support. We (I hope I am speaking for most here) were also taught to always be EQUALS with the men in our lives, not above them, not below them but BESIDE them.
This lesson apparently LOST on the "houswive." As for 'table flips" living in NJ AND Italian never saw one and hope I never do.
In closing, the gay, lesbian and trans community are welcome with open arms in our circle (I am straight) and NO OFFENSIVE comments accepted ever.

Andy-
Great reunion show. It was like they were scared of the drama and all the other housewifes love it!!!!!! Good TV, I found out that Jacqueline and Danielle are no longer friends, hopefully you will touch on that tonight. I loved Caroline being the queen of accountability, almost as much as I liked seeing Danielle squirm. If you pick this show up for a second season, lets see if you can crack Dina, there is definetly more under the surface.
BTW- why are you punishing us for a whole month by withholding Atlanta. I can't wait to see season 2, especially since you said it makes last season look like going to church!!!!!
Keep the good stuff coming,

THANK YOU ANDY for the remarks you made to the Jersey "sisters" concerning Joe's "gay" remark. It's so offensive to use the word "gay" as a joke or an insult. I couldn't believe that the Jersey girls just didn't get it!!! Ladies...I thought the East Coast was all progressive and forward thinking. NOT. I was embarrassed and ashamed that my fellow femaile Italians don't have more class. Table tossing, screaming, cursing...GROW UP. As for the self outing...I was proud of you for what you said and the class that you showed. Keep up the good work. You make those reunion shows worth watching.

I think you are the right person for the reunion shows, but, I feel you can and DO put your foot in it from time to time.
How nice also for YOU to share a personal thing with us last night by "coming out!" At this rate, there's gonna be more GAY people in the US than straight! (lol)
Keep on keeping on Andy, you are just awesome and gorgeous with it! :)))

Andy, I agree wholeheartedly that the "gay" comment was out of line and offensive.
My children came home using that one recently and it resulted in a very long talk with them about what is appropriate behavior and that there is nothing wrong with being gay and that to use the term "gay" in a derogatory fashion will not be tolerated in our home and if I find they have used it outside the home, punishment will ensue!
Those idiots knew that it was offensive, as is just about every word out of their mouths, they just can't help trying to justify their own stupidity!

Hi Andy, I have always liked the way you conduct the reunions but think you took the Joe using gay slurs to serious. I have gay friends myself but I think he meant it in that way. I would also like to see if maybe BRAVO can get fans to a reunion so we could ask questions to the housewives. I would love give them my point of view as a viewer especially to the New Jersey housewives. I think the next show needs to be The Los Angeles County Housewives, I would love to be on the show.

First, I am embarrassed that these women are Italian. Being a first generation American, I can not relate to them. Teaching their daughters to be good "housewives", to cook, clean, and serve their husbands, what year are we living in girls? My Italian parents encouraged me to do well in school, be independent, and provide for myself, in order to value myself w/ out depending on a "man". Kudos to the New Jersey Housewives for marrying into money - you are lucky, but the daughters should be taught they too can have careers and earn their own money.
Second, I also agree that using the word "gay" in a negative context is offensive. I don't believe people are being too sensitive, its obvious that Joe did not use the word to be positive.

Hey Andy,
Using the word "Gay" to describe somone or something is offensive and juvenille. It shows the true IQ of the person saying it (are you listening Joe). That being said, you are a fine looking man and one of the reasons I enjoy watching the reunion shows. Keep up the good work.

Good evening, Andy,
Was finally able to see all of the housewives shows from their time filling in for Kathie Lee (had to tape them since I work). They all did a great job - especially Bethenny - what a natural.
Super idea having them fill in. Simon Barney seems like a doll.Have to agree with a viewer a few posts back regarding Danielle. She seems very thin and not as feisty. While I may not agree with some of the things she does or says, she is entitled to her opinion. There is something about her that pulls at my heart. Perhaps it is her beautiful, eloquent daughters. It is evident how much they love her. I hope she is being looked after by a close friend who has her best interests at heart. I truly believe she is an inherently good person.

Hi Andy,
I'm so glad you called Teresa's husband out on his gay slur. It was offensive, and these women knew it. They were just trying to save face. My son came home from Middle School very upset on several occasions this year because kids were calling him gay. It has become a put-down word and a synonym for stupid. I really like your interview style, but I wish you were a little tougher on the Manzo sisters. They didn't seem to understand the concept behind the Real Housewives series and wanted everything on their terms. They wanted to keep it all in the family and didn't want to interact with outsiders. Jill Zarin, for example, made an effort to include everyone, whether she liked them or not.

- rhiannon
Andy, Of course the gay slur wasn't kosher, but what would this bunch know about kosher, nothing. They are in their own little world and seem to make their own rules as they go along. Caroline seems to justify every negative action by giving a ten minute explanation on how they're family, so that makes everything okay. Also, they blame a lot of their unsophisticated behavior on being Italian. This is as offensive to most Italian Americans as Joe's gay comment is to the gay population. As an Italian American, I don't know a single Italian American person who would behave in this fashion. If Teresa thinks it is okay to scream in a restaurant, and destroy furniture, linens, china, etc.(all belonging to the restaurant), I can't imagine what she's capable of in the privacy of that catering hall she calls home.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALL THESE VIEWERS! I have never written on a blog like this before, but I am disgusted with these comments.
THANK YOU andy for pointing out that the gay comment was offensive when all the housewives other than danielle are so entrenched in their ignorant peer community that it never even occurs to them that using gay as a pejorative could be wrong--and that if you really don't have a problem with gay people, you should clean up your language so that your words are in line with your beliefs.
theresa should have started off by apologizing and explaining that her husband didn't mean to be offensive--instead of criticizing danielle for taking offense and then claiming that no normal person would be offended by that comment. then this crap about "some of my closest friends are gay" just didn't work for me. maybe these housewives would have us believe that gays in new jersey have to put up with disrespect from their friends, but I think it is more likely that theresa, the other housewives, and half the viewers commenting on this blog are hopelessly ignorant and misguided.
I am glad you said something this time, but I wish you had laid into Tamra for her comment, and I wish you had gone further in explaining to these idiots why language that is offensive to gays helps perpetuate intolerance.
I know a great number of gay people, and none of them would be cool with someone speaking REPEATEDLY the way theresa's husband did.
GUESS WHAT VIEWERS: there is still rampant homophobia in this country, and using "gay" as a synonym for bad, stupid, lame, or negative contributes to the awful underlying societal stigma that prevents so many gay people from ever acknowledging themselves and coming out in the first place.

I'm a gay jewish male who is 49 and I didn't find Joe's comment offensive. In this era of total political correctness, we've taken it too far. He just made an off the cuff remark. We all need to lighten up a bit and take a step back. I'm not even sure that I agree with gay marriage.

Why is everyone on the rampage over Joe's gay comments? Many gay people say it to each other all the time and no one bats an eye. Perhaps the people that are upset should be more concerned about Perez Hilton's use of the word "faggot". I find that truly offensive yet only Joe's Defender has mentioned it. I think everyone needs to lighten up on Joe.

I love Bethenny and Jill, but they constantly make fun of gay people. They note the unique styles of gay men and their femininity. Take that trip to Fire Island for example. Bethenny jokes with the gay men and gave them Bethenny insults left and right.
I love Alex and Simon, you yourself asked Alex if Simon was gay and you played a tape of some of his activities to show it. I guess it's gay to take a massage or to wear fashions that are unique.
I think it would be nice if you apologize to Simon. Alex pretended not to take offence, but there are articles where Simon is getting tired of denying the accusations. I don't think Simon is gay. I think he is Australian and they are all like that down there in the upside down world.
Take care....

Andy,
Danielle looked so distraught on the reunion show and it is so apparent that she has lost a ton of weight. If these four are allowed to keep this up, Danielle is going to be one very unstable women. By the looks of her from the show last night, she is on her way.
I am frightned of how they have ganged up on her. Not sure what she has done for Caroline to deem her "garbage", but you better jump in and save this woman or have a conversation with your cast.
She is depressed and her face looked like a woman that is very ill - sunken cheeks. That is why her forehead looks so pronounced.

This show is insulting to all of the REAL housewives of NJ. We ALL don't live in million dollar homes; we don't walk away from lucrative careers to stay home to take care of our hairless cats and over-indulged children; we don't raise our daughters to be slaves to a household; and we DON'T have reported ties to a certain high-profile crime family.
I can't believe that Bravo TV for the sake of ratings has allowed an entire female population of a state to be insulted and demoralized by the type of housewife these women represent.
I have a close circle of approximately 12 women and NONE of us have lifestyles that are even close to this group of women. We are little league Moms, Soccer Moms, Career Women, empty nesters, GILF's, and social advocates.
I would like to know if even one of these women know who Bruce Springsteen is and if they can find Asbury Park on the map.
Franklin Lakes????? - you might as well have filmed this series in upstate NY. Come on - even I live around the corner from BonJovi's childhood home......Why don't you film the real housewives of Newark or Camden if you want to know what it's really like to make it or break it in the state of NJ without living off of your husband's salary (where ever that may actually come from).
I think BRAVO should air an apology to the REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW JERSEY.
I would also like to hear from Danielle how much money she stands to make from the publisher of her ex-husband's book by bringing it up on the show...................
and Jacqueline - just what do you know about this family that Caroline is afraid to let you say more than 2 words without talking over you.............................
Theresa - go back to school honey - clean-z-iness - not a word.
Dina - go back to work......
Danielle - I swear I've seen you dance at a strip club in NJ......and wouldn't give you my dollar

OMG let Andy have an opinion. He was offended. Who cares if you are gay and you weren't. He was. So, move on.
Also, Andy, please talk to the producers of the Reunion Shows. My friends and I tune in religiously but find that the reunions are a bit boring after all the hype and previews. Us fans have seen the clips of the episodes a zillion times and we don't need a re-cap. That wastes precious time where we could see the drama and chit-chat. Just a thought! Show us the good stuff :)

Andy,
Good Job! You had every right to ask the sisters about their family and the alleged mob ties. Please, how many middle aged white men get shot and stuffed in a trunk in 1983 that is not mob related. Who pays for thousands of dollars worth of furniture in cash other than people who launder money? If they are so sensitive why did they agree to do a reality show? Also Caroline's association with Bernie Kerik didn't help her defense. Didn't he plead guilty for taking favors from people connected to the mob?

My gaawd, are these women for real? Dina and Caroline, come on ladies, just be yourselves OUTSIDE THE CAMERA...you both really come across as trying to be know it alls and tough; give it a break. Jacqueline, you are just way way to nice and patient with everything; you want to get along with everyone, I understand, but they all talk behind your back, not a good thing. Be sharp, woman! Listen between the lines. And of course, the REAL drama queen, Danielle. Good Lord, such a life you live....if your girls are than important to you, then set a good example...remember your girls WATCH the TV tube also and if you think they are not curious as to what is being filmed....hah, where there is a will there is a way. And last of all, Teresa, oh my gaawd, grow up, girlfriend. Exert some discipline on those spoiled brats of yours. I mean, letting your youngest get on top of the cash register in the kids clothing store....and yeah, whats with the big wad of $$ and that mini mansion. Talk about a spoiled woman, good grief!
Ok this is my view of this Housewives show, and I'm sticking to it. I'd rather watch the Housewives of OC and NY than this one.

I am disgusted by NYC Prep--in this economy, this is the last thing struggling families want or need to watch. Especially not their teen kids who will now be feeling worse about themselves, demanding more from their parents that they can't afford, and think that they too should engage in sex, drugs, and spending their parents money when they are bored. This is sick and twisted! Their parents should be ashamed and so should Bravo--because these people are not the norm for this country, nor should they be. Flaunted on tv I fear they will become the wrong kind of behavior that other kids will attempt to emulate. God help us!

I'd like to know why you didn't question Tamra and her use of the word homo? That sounds more offensive than gay. I think you should have talked to Joe about it if it really bothered you. Teresa doesn't control or is she responsible for what he says.I can understand this reunion being tense. You could feel it through the TV. None of the ladies really seemed to have want to be there.
Hopefully tomorrow will be better or this reunion will be the first that truly sucked.

First off, Love, Love, Loved the NJHW. As for throwing tables, I'm a Sicilian housewife and I have tossed a table or two myself. Disrespect can push my buttons to "table tossing" too. I think my grandmother told me it's an italian womans sport. I feel ties with most of the women on the show. However, I feel that it was horrible to bring a book like that to the attention of a hairdresser and then say "to protect my family". From what? A bad hair cut? Did anyone think of D's kids and the affect it would have on them? Caroline, you are a strong and beautiful woman, you should have used that strength to go face to face with her. The rest of you are so funny, don't change. I hope you can find peace in all your lives. Life is too short to worry about a quarter century old mistake.

Andy-I personally like when you host all of the reunions, most are quite humorous. Your interview style is very unbiased and provocative.
However, I was surprised that you "outed" yourself out during RHW of NJ, so the "gay" comment must have bothered you. Since I am not gay, I find that your feelings oversede mine or anyone that is not homosexual. But I agree with you the comments were offensive to my ears, too. The comments were meant as an insult to the instructor. I took the comment as a homo-phobic slur. Theresa and "her friends" can try to make it sound as a light joke but it was insensitive comment and Danielle was right to call Theresa's husband, Joe, on it. Any comments meant to degrade another person is bigotry. It's not right to joke about someone's skin color, weight, religion, orgin, or sexuality. We need to end hatred by starting to teach other tolerance of others. Keep up the good work. I love Bravo. I got extended cable in both homes so I can see Bravo when I'm working or relaxing.

Andy, you may have taken offense to the gay comment, but I take offense by your remarks regarding Jacqueline's miscarriage. Having suffered a miscarriage myself, this is not something you get over. Having a baby does not replace the bab(ies)y you lost. My gay hairdresser & I talked about the NJ show today. Andy, you need a time out. Lighten up Andy, we were offended by your attach to the WIFE of Joe who said the off handed remark. Joe said it, not Teresa. Just like Danielle, the reunion was not the time or place to "come out", either with a book, or being gay. Why didn’t you talk to Joe if you were so “offended”? Being from L.A. I guess it is so normal to have gay friends. Gay, straight, women, men, fat, skinny, old, who the hell cares? We all need to respect each other and stop being so hypersensitive.

Hi Andy,Your doing a wonderful job with Bravo.I had just one comment to make about Joes gay comment.Maybe he did feel like the whole dancing thing was a little gay.Not that being gay is bad at all.In truth gay men are usually good dancers with the exception of Jill Zarins gay husband remember him dancing at the charity event.Lol.Maybe Joe was a little worried how it would look a macho heteralsexual male dancing like that really made him look like a homosexual literally.Straight macho men do not like to do things that would make them appear to be gay it's embarrassing to them trust me I'M MARRIED TO ONE.Not that there is anything wrong with being gay but when your straight your straight who cares what anyone thinks.

You were offended by the comment from Joe. I was offended that Danielle made a comment about "if this is how Italian guys from Jersey act." That is depolorable. Yet it is fine to make statements about Italians, for some reason we should not be offended. No one has called her out on it.
Furthermore, Danielle's comment about "I am not your wife", again putting down how Italian men treat their wives.
Pretty easy to tell why she's not married. Italian men in New Jersey have more sense.
Now let's see if bravo is as concerned about Italians as they are about the gay remark. If you want to be a respected commentator, you need to be fair to all Andy.
PS: my brother is gay and he had no problem with Joe's comment, but he did have a problem with Danielle's comment about Italian men in New Jersey

Andy,
My gay roomate and I were watching the RHNJ reunion last night, and we were SO proud of you. Thank you for coming out, and defending the gays. It means a lot to us and it was totally sexy...
and to all the straight people: calling anything gay as an insult is still offensive even if your internally homophobic token gay friend/family member doesn't think so.

Andy,
I adore your posture and finesse in conducting the interviews with such unbalanced groups as the NH's (all of them) are! Bravo and kudo's to you. My only doubt about last night is WHY the location for that shooting had to be kept secret?

I think NYC prep gives off an icky Hills vibe. I watch and love a lot of reality TV, but I can't "stomach" that obvious manipulation of situations and interactions. I don't think I'll watch again.
And by the way, Andy, I think your way of explaining when the usage of "gay" can be offensive (when it's used as a synonym for "stupid") is on-the-nose as easy to differentiate. I'm one who is bothered by an actual synonym for "stupid," "retarded."

Andy, who would I contact about a recommendation for a candidate for The Real Housewives of DC? I understand Bravo is currently interviewing in DC for various women and do I have the perfect person for you! When I bring her name up, everyone says 'Yes! She is perfect!' This woman is very connected in DC, is the party planner to who's who in DC, does over-the-top events, married to a famous doctor, and her personality is blunt and direct, yet kind-hearted. She is a pistol and a personality! She is a firecracker! Email me!

Andy:
Why can't people just own up to screwing up. It's the same excuse when someone uses the N word and then proceeds to tell everyone how many black friends they have. Just say I'm sorry if I offended you....it's what the grown ups do.
Also, its funny how defensive Caroline gets when the bring up the skeletons in her closet but yet has no problem wanting Danielle to answer for her past. You know the old sayin....people who live in glass houses. Don't go on a reality show if you don't want people digging up dirt on you.
I can't wait for your show Andy, used to watch your on-line show all the time. FYI...like the Fashion Show...don't love it yet though I love me some Isaac...I think someone like Marc Jacobs should do the mentoring...now we're talking drama...it needs a spark.

Andy,
I completely agree with your point-of-view regarding the whole gay comment thing. Let's call a spade a spade...if we're going to talk stereotypes- that guy Joe who used the slur is one himself, representing a certain regional nationality (eh-hem). I wonder if he would be ok with being called a WOP. And if "gay" in conversational terms is perceived as meaning "stupid", then truly, Teresa is the GAYEST creature on the face of this earth. I don't know if I have ever heard someone more illiterate and just plain dumb in my life. It's not funny, it's actually painful to watch her. I pity their kids.

Andy, Andy! I really hope you are more involved on tomorrows' show. Did Bravo know about the fed papers that have come out regarding the past that Danielle repeated says is no big deal and not just that but just doesn't seem honest about. I really hope thursday in not another stage for Danielle to keep lying and manipulating things that she herself says. Also will anyone address her comments about "Dina threatened me once and look what happened to her. Her whole family turned on her..." I am surprised this was left to the end and her vindictive behavior isn't called to the forefront more.

Andy,
I do not watch reality tv, but am addicted to TRHWof NJ! It is the first series where I feel you found real women, moms, and wives. They aren't perfect, but none of us in non-tv land are either. The other series were entertaining to an extent but more fantasy than reality. However, I wonder about your decision to place Danielle Staub f/k/a Beverly Merrill a/k/a Angela on the show with these other women. I reserved my opinion until I saw cold hard facts from the smoking gun web site. I can say after reading those documents you really took a chance putting a person with that past history on this show. If she were able to own up to it, I would say she is reformed (possibly). Her denial coupled with her need to deflect attention from herself onto others illustrates she isn't.
I can't wait for the second season, but without the criminal. I like all the other women too much to continue to support a show that places their families in this persons company.
NYC Prep - terrible. Where r the parents? DCF should be called.

I love the housewives series - however, NJ was the "worst" - content was awful, actors were awful, fake, no content at all, all liars, Danielle was the worst and had no business being in a TV show. The whole season seemed short - and thank Heavens. Hideous.

Andy,
While I completely understand why you are offended by Joe's comment, I have to ask why you are not more upset with the fact that your staff failed to run a proper background check on Danielle's criminal past? Or the fact that Danielle repeatedly lied to you regarding her background?
The Manzos never backed away from their past, but you drove at them much harder than Danielle in terms of getting to the truth. While people deserve second chances, Danielle's current behavior, while not criminal, is not necessarily above board either. Her duplicity resulted in a family being torn apart on national TV and subject to many accusations.
Why keep her on the show? Given Atlanta's behavior, the recent OC reunion and now Danielle-is it fair to say my formerly favorite TV franchise is heading toward Jerry Springer fare? Please say it ain't so!

Hi Andy,
I can not wait for your new show. I hope you have fun with it. I did not watch NYC Prep- not my thing, but did get sucked into the RHWNJ. What a mess. I can not understand how Bravo came across these people, and what they saw in them that would merit a show. I just reviewed Dina's wedding show on line from VH-1, and she has changed completely. I am wondering if her Tommy and Danielle may have been friends????? which would have explained the root of the problems, since no one will mention it. I was offended by Caroline's double standards and her putting her family out there like they are saints... excuse me- where did your dog come from? Theresa needs therapy, and if anything ever happened to her secure home-life (which could easily happen in today's economy) what in the world would she do? Always plan for the future. I love Danielle's kids. They are the best of the show, and should have a show of their own.

I'm still scratching my head to see what the problem was. I've heard of many things but I have NEVER heard the word gay used to mean someone is stupid. Now if you want to smear and use derogatory language to describe a gay person or someone you think is gay, the word GAY is NOT what you use. I did think your explaination was a little much. You really have to stretch to take what was said to be an insult.
That's like getting all riled up because someone calls me a girl, when I'm a girl. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Teresa apologised. But had it been me... you wouldn't have been as lucky. Let's be a little more realistic please.
- 06/24/2009 - 2:03pm
- Rich
I completely agree with your taking offense to Joe's comment. He may not have meant it to be derogatory, but the phrase "that's gay" has long been used in a negative way. I really think the best way for Theresa to have dealt with it is to just apologize and move on. There's really no way to justify that phrase so that no one takes offense to it. So props to you for calling him out and it almost seemed like Dina and Caroline were arguing with you about it because it would validate something Danielle said which brings me to my next point.
It seems like Caroline is one of those people who will argue forever about something until the other party concedes that she is right. This was displayed by her vehement defense against the mob comments. I'm not saying that they do have mob connections, but for real, on one side of the couch you got Caroline going off on you about the question and then Dina on the opposite end with tears streaming down her face. It seems like there would be a reason for that strong of a defense other than that it is just a rumor. I just can't get over how long Caroline went on and on about it...something is a little off about that. She seems to have a switch that gets thrown and she goes into protector mode--her voice changes, so does her demeanor.
I also thought that in general the reunion was very stifled. Like Theresa hardly said anything so I'm hoping tomorrow's segment gets out there. I think you should really push issues with them like you did on the NY reunion and just recently on the OC show where you told Vicki that she had to "own her snarky comments." That was awesome! Call them out! Can't wait to see the rest of the NJ reunion!!

I do find the word "gay" used in the context in which Joe used it as offensive. I don't think Joe intended it in a malicious way but by using the word "gay" to describe something that is stupid/dumb or negativily effeminent is offensive. By using "gay" in a negative way, it shows other people that it is okay to use it in that fashion as well and that gay people are stupid/dumb or negative. I think using "gay" in this fashion is similar to using "jew" to describe the action of someone being cheap. And if I said that Washingtonians regularly used the term "jew", that would not make it okay. There are plenty of other words Americans have used through out history that are not acceptable and using the word "gay" in this fashion, is not acceptable. Thanks for saying so Andy!!!
- 06/24/2009 - 1:22pm
- Bad Behavior Justification
That's all I saw on that show last night. People pointing fingers at each other, and then justifying what they did or said. Caroline is a ridiculous drama queen who wants to be in charge of everyone and everything. Let people talk for themselves, Caroline! PUHLEEZ!!!!
Teresa, try to wrap your head around this. It is not acceptable to use the word "gay" in a derogatory manner. I don't care whether or not we know your husband, and frankly, I don't want to. I know plenty like him. He's one of those "good old boys" who thinks using the words "gay" "fag" and "dyke" is fine as long as he follows it up with a laugh. It's not ok. You should have known that when Andy said it offended him last night. I"m tried of hearing people justify what he said as ok. It wasn't ok. I was offended and disgusted by it.
Andy, you were the picture of grace and manners. As always. Way to put up with the drama queens.

For those of you who are trying to find Andy on Twitter, you don't need to type in "www." in the web address. All you have to type is "http://twitter.com", then a "/", and then the Twitter tag minus the "@". I'm not a member of Twitter, but I have a feeling that that's going to change pretty soon.
For me, "NYC Prep" is the reason why I watch TV... it's so I can learn about a different facet of society that I didn't know existed. Like "The Fashion Show," I'm going to need to watch more episodes before I get completely invested in the show, but my interest has been sparked.
Sure, they have more money and luxuries than I'll probably ever see in my life, but, sometimes, I feel bad for them because they have to work so painstakingly hard to keep up appearances and hold their own within a brutally tough social environment. However, there are other times when I see their antics and I, to quote Reba McEntire from an episode of "Reba", want to cut me off a switch from the whippin' tree, but that contributes to the overall intrigue of the show.
I'm looking forward to seeing more "NYC Prep". And "The Real Housewives of New Jersey". And "Top Chef: Masters". And "The Fashion Show." My name is Tim and I'm a Bravo-holic.

As an Italian American, I am extremely offended by the accusations of “mob ties” towards this family.
Why is it that whenever a large Italian family is successful they are labeled as being involved in organized crime? That is the same thing as assuming that someone of a particular race or nationality is successful only because they must be a criminal or a drug dealer. It is extremely offensive and should not be thrown around as something that is funny or idolized. Many Italian Americans must face that stigma every day and it is unfair because if it were any other nationality or race that was being “generalized” it would be condemned, but for some reason because this family is Italian it seems to be ok. Please be aware that Italians have been very hard-working, law-abiding citizens of this country and have in fact played a large part in building this country.I am more disgusted with you. You were quick to call out Joe on the gay comment, which I’m sure you’ve used many times, but you didn’t mind asking about their “mob ties”. Granted, you were only relaying questions; however, you did ask the question with a smirk on your face and you should have been equally offended by the racist assumption.

I just want to say that using the term "gay" as a slang term does not equate to "stupid." My father is a proud, intelligent gay man, and he and his partner use this term frequently. We discussed this issue because of Joe's comment, and neither of them took offense. When people use that term, it is typically used to describe something flamboyantly feminine or over-the-top that falls outside of the realm of most people's everyday experiences, like a Vegas showgirl's feathered headdress or a birthday party for a mini-Yorkie puppy with a cake that looks like it was designed by a professional from the Food Network. These things are humorous to most folks because they are so over-the-top, and I don't think that most people mean any disrespect to gay people when they use the term. Most of the over-the-top "queens" I have met in my Dad's circle of friends are the type who are proud to be so flamboyant and do not take offense at remarks like this. If Joe had said something like "That guy is such a gay homo" or attacked him personally, it would be different, but I think he was just saying that for a bunch of Jersey guys taking flamenco dancing lessons together, it seemed over-the-top for them because it is outside of their normal everday life activities. I get that this can be equated to hate speech, like calling someone a "retard" but I think that you have to put it into perspective as to how it is used. My sister calls me a tard if I do something blatantly incorrectly, like put the milk in the pantry instead of the fridge, but there is no malice intended towards people who are actually mentally retarded. It's like taking a word and making a different meaning for it. When people say "Oh, jeez!" the church doesn't freak out, but "Oh, jeez" is short for "Oh, Jesus" which is technically using the Lord's name in vain. I get that Jesus isn't here to get offended by it, but you get my point. I hope. Anyway, I'm just saying, we need to stop being so hypersensitive about these things because eventually we will all have to remain on mute. And harping on something like this doesn't help the cause in getting equality for all. I'm sure people disagree with me, but isn't a rational explanation better than continuing to beat up these folks for something that most people do everyday? And you may not use the term "gay" as slang, but have you ever told/heard a Polack joke? Or said that someone gypped you out of some money? Or made a comment about "women drivers"? Or any one of a million other common parts of speech that are part of the venacular now that could be considered offensive to SOME group somewhere? Think about your own actions before you point the finger. No one is above this.

Oh My Gaaaawwwwd, where do ya start?
Firstly, BRAVO Andy for speaking up about the 'gay" comment. Teresa seriously needs to stop making excuses that EVERYONE in Jersey says "gay" instead of stupid. Eh? When did she take a poll?
Making "gay" a euphenism for being stupid is using gay in a negative way. Duh! It ultimately promotes intolerance. We should be teaching our children acceptance without prejudice. If I heard my fourteen year old using gay other than meaning homosexual or happy, I'd correct her. Our children learn from us Teresa. Be a good example.
Dina and Caroline are a pair of hypocrites. They don't want stories spread about their family but they are happy to spread someone else's. Shame on them.
Jacqueline - Why does Caroline feel justified in commenting on this woman's relationships? What her and her husband do is their business. Who her friend's are is her business - butt out! She's an adult, and you are not her mother Caroline. Capice?
Danielle - you don't change your name and then go on a reality show. Period. You also don't make sex tapes with sleazeball guys you are just dating - on a cellphone or not. Pay attention, pah-lease!
Andy, you are keeping it real as always! You looked great as in the gray/blue combo. Definitely your colors. Can't wait to watch Top Chef Masters tonight!

Andy - I think "gay" in this context did not mean "stupid" - it means something that is in line with what a gay male might like - in that sense it is a stereotype (and unfair because gay men don't all share the same tastes obviously) - but not meant as hurtful. Dancing, seeing musical theater, decorating etc... some straight males in NY/NJ might describe as "gay" meaning something gay men might like to do - and distinguishing themselves as "straight men". I don't think it was meant as hurtful. Remember Joe was the one who said, "Who would love a couch?" - it's just not his thing.
I see you made the cover of US Weekly (on the stands already today in NY) - that's cool. Although - you can't bring Danielle back - there's no way those 5 can pretend to get along like on other shows.
By the way - NJ and NY are my fav's - because the event's, lunch etc. don't feel forced by television the way the other Housewives shows feel forced...
Love you... when is Flipping Out coming back?? Sorry - but the prep school thing is stomach turning ... it's difficult to want to watch unconscionable people. YUK.

Love your work. I agree with you I totally found it offensive with Joe's Gay comments. I was even more offended that she then said that if we took offense we were stupid. Using Gay as a negative statement is insensitive. The fact that she is so oblivious to the whole thing is sad.

I wish you had pushed Danielle on the surgery thing a little more, because when you see the pics from "The Book," it's obvious she has been nipped and tucked! Oh well, she can keep denying it like she does everything else and live in her own delusion.

These women didn't seem to be having fun with this reunion, what made the NY housewives reunion so epic was that all the women just threw themselves completely into the fray and seemed to relish it. They also have no problem calling out stuff that no one has seen, the nj women seem reluctant to tell the whole truth. And Caroline with her "family family fmaily" crap is annoying, she is shady and so is her husband. Also Teresa is a spoiled beyotch...the way she basically called andy an idiot was disgusting.

Andy,
I enjoyed watching the Jersey girls very much, I feel sorry for delusional Danielle and all the drama and pain she caused the others and that they caused her, but I can't bear to watch the Preppies. I feel too sad for them, trying to be sophisticated and becoming jaded at 16 and 17 years of age. The absent parents who live in the Hamptons scream CHILD ABANDONMENT to me. How unsafe to not have an adult in charge of the home. It's very scary, and I'm so concerned about the underage drinking and promiscuity. These poor kids never got to be kids at all. I think they should all move to Texas where they could go to football games and swim parties, have age-appropriate fun and still get an excellent education. :-)
Andy, I never watch Kathy Griffin either because of her vulgarity, and now I won't watch the Bravo awards because she cursed at those sweet children in her adoption skit. A very ugly thing to do, I thought.PS- Please, I beg you, teach the housewives nationwide that "He, she and I" are subject pronouns and "Him, her and me" are object pronouns. Example: She and I went shopping. The clerk handed the multitude of packages to her and me.

Hey Andy,
Re: Gay comment
I liked when Danielle stood up to Joe for his Gay comment because I think anytime you single out a group, positively or negatively, it divides. However, I do not think Joe equated dancing, or "gayest thing I ever did" with stupid. He was the one who wanted to go for dance lessons in the first place.
Dancing is an artform and elegant. It seems Joe may have felt stupid or out of place doing something that was elegant. Not that dancing or gays are stupid. I think everyone was a little hard on this loveable lug.Love ya!
