- He Wasn't Meant to Grow Old
- Andy Cohen remembers seeing Michael Jackson perform with his friend Natasha Richardson on September 10, 2001.
Natasha Richardson took me to Michael Jackson's 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden. It was a night I'll never, ever forget. All the madness of his face and his craziness and legal mess was forgotten the second he hit the stage. He was, in a word, magic.
Natasha, in her ineffible way, scored tickets smack in front of the stage. It felt like everybody was there and under his spell. His moves were electric. He grunted and thrusted and kept repeating "LoveYoooooo." The crowd would say "LoveYoooooo" right back at him. Back and forth and back and forth. And the music! Hit after hit after AMAZING song, every one a classic.
And so we fell BACK in love with MJ (for about the 100th time). We cheered and screamed "LoveYooooo" all night. After the show we went to Pastis and talked about Michael. Inside the restaurant, we yelped "LoveYoooo" spontaneously into the air all night. It was a perfect evening in every way, New York City at its best. We stayed out very late, closing down Pastis. We walked out into the latenight, breathing perfect air, and gazed up at how beautiful the Twin Towers looked.
The date was September 10, 2001. It was the night before the world changed forever. My friend is dead. Michael Jackson is dead. The Twin Towers are gone.
Anything can happen, no matter how impossible. Anything. I feel like nothing will surprise me anymore.
The truth is that maybe Michael Jackson is in a better place. Maybe he wasn't meant to grow old. Maybe he really did not WANT to grow old. Maybe he was a very sad person. And maybe now we should just remember his greatness and the music and not all the nonsense. Let's, OK?
Everybody was praying for a comeback. Could it actually have happened? It seemed like everything he touched in the last few years ended in a lawsuit, but he was rehearsing at the Staples Center the night before he died. Could he have had a comeback??? Could it have been?? We'll never know, and THAT'S tragic.
And I do hope we can all give Farrah her proper due (WTF does People mag do for a cover next week??). There will never be another head of hair, set of teeth, and beautiful sunny soul like hers ... Jill Munroe forever.
Feeling pretty grateful to be alive and healthy right about now.

Andy, I think you are super adorable...and I love your fire. However, I must correct a comment you made regarding Wilson's 'lie' outburst at Obama's speech. You stated on last night's show that the Democrats had never been so disrespectful. That needs to be corrected--they were booing and yelling at Bush WHILE he was delivering his speech. At least Wilson did it on a pause. Anyway, love the show, and keep up the good work!

The segment you do at the end of The Real Housewives of Atlanta needs to go back to the way you used to do it. It has turned into a gay fest...don't get me wrong I have gay friends but, the show isn't about you. Bring back just you interviewing the housewives.

I reread your article about the night of Sept 10, 2001.
I have a question to you all.
Now that Mr.Jackson is gone. Do you think it is possible that he was a-sexual. That he really thought he was Peter Pan. That he did think that it was okay to sleep actually sleep with little "lost" children.
That he created Neverland for retreat away from ADULTS. Could it be possible that he never hurt anyone but himself. Creating a world that was and could never be.
He bought and bought couldnt wouldn't pay his bills because he gave to the children. They would and never could hurt him. He was Peter Pan. With his circus of a home. With the candy shop and Ferris wheel.
We have seen the vultures come out. His father already telling us about his new company. How talented Michael's children are. Then the supposed older 3rd son. Who just happens to sing. Will he be sold as his fathers long last son?
Maybe if we knew we could get away with it. Would we even for one day create a day that was Neverland, just for one moon, one sun. No racism, no anger, no hurt. Physically or emotionally, would we create a Neverland for ourselves or our children.

Andy,
I thought you were just another gossiping to the point of meanness host. Than two things happened. One could be my imagination.
One. Are you anderson Cooper a couple. When he called when Jeff and Kim were on you lite up. You get a look of a person that has a secret. I can usually tell by a persons smile and demeanour of they care for someone. You seemed to. Than Jeff looked and commented on your set. Many a clue. The AC. I know you are a AC also. But I just got something. I am straight woman and love Anderson as many women do. But I just think that I am not the one!!!!!!!
And your article about your friends and the towers. Which I guess to New Yorkers the twins were the family member you made fun of but depended on to be there. Like a favorite old pair of pajamas on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Do you have anymore articles/essays that I can read besides those on this board about housewives that live in pretend town. As I like to say HouseLies of the Middle Class of Any City, zip-code MONEY
And I love Jeff and Kims interview, what a duo.

andy, andy - i like you in general, but your new live show needs a lot of work. i can't watch it in one sitting because the awkward moments make me flinch.
a lot of the ideas, i could see, came right from the hills aftershow (like the show remix, and having ppl draw on stills)...and i have to say the original still comes out the winner.
and then your efforts to bring in other reality tidbits a la the soup just sort of fall flat...
i like you and want your show to succeed, but it needs some major editing done...

Hi Andy.
I don't know how or why but my straight boyfriend then fiance then husband turned me on to the housewives and "Top Chef" and pretty much any Bravo show from then on. Now several questions emerge as I ask him about NYC "prep school" life. The real question we have is do you know Dave Karger? That's actually his cousin.

It is a sad time as so many relatively young people have died so much before their time. I was saddened about your friend Natashas death. She had a loving husband and young children who will miss her as I'm sure you do. And Farrah...I remember my sons having her poster on their wall..she truly suffered at the end of her life.My heart broke when I heard about Michael Jackson. To hear him sing and watch him dance was the most mesmerizing thing I've ever seen. His talent was out of this world...No one will ever achieve the greatness that he did.He was ostracized for being different. If we had been deprived of a childhood as he was we would be different too.He was a man child with a good heart. I will forever miss you Michael...you touched my soul!I hope all of them are at peace.

She was only 3 when the album first came out "BUT", it was still a chart topper when she turned eight, 4 years later,"how amazing". That being said I pray the allogations were not or are not true about molestaion! Because if any are we have to think about the children! That being said "I don't believe it"! We've lost the American singer, songwriter and Icon of our generation..Peace...DEDE

Andy,
My sincere and belated condolences on the lost of your friend Natasha.
What strikes me is that I'm not sure if Michael ever had the chance to have "normal" friendships, or at the very least a normal evening like the one you describe with your dear friend - a good concert, a goofy "inside joke" afterwards, a good meal... and a good memory to hold on to the next day and at her passing. Rosie O'Donnell perhaps put it best in her own blog about his passing - he perhaps had no "remember whens" to fall back on, at least in terms of his childhood.
Thank you for sharing one of your "remember when" moments - how extraordinary, how lucky you are to have that moment in time with a remarkable woman, to see such an amazing talent, and having that one last memory of New York before the world changed.

Andy, that is so surreal what you wrote, Natasha, Michael and the Twin Towers were there the night you went to the concert, and now they are all gone forever. Life is a gift and fleeting. No one knows what will happen tomorrow. We have to make each day count because nothing is forever and can be snatched away without notice. Sometimes we take things for granted, but the reality is, nothing should be taken for granted, each person in our lives is a unique treasure.

Beautifully written Andy! I too hope that Farrah's life is not over-shadowed by the passing of Michael Jackson. Both icons deserve equal respect and coverage in the media! I smiled when I read, "Jill Munroe forever." What little girl didn't play Charlie's Angel and want to be Jill! She was a beautiful spirit who lived her life with grace and died with dignity! She deserves her moment too!

I agree with your sentiments exactly. Let us not forget, too, Ed McMahon--Star Search, Johnny Carson sidekick, helping Jerry Lewis during the telethons. I loved Charlie's Angels, LOVED IT (have it on DVD), and Farrah was charasmatic in her day, but there was reported drug use in her life, too (remember David Letterman). It is unfortunate how much time some spend on the negative . . . Michael Jackson created a genre, created the music video as we know it today. I sat over a weekend glued to "We Are The World." He was a humanitarian who gave more than he took--this man was GLOBAL and he changed our clothes, what we watched and gave us the soundtrack for our lives. Farrah did give us a hairdo and she bravely fought cancer, but compared to Ed McMahon who has received hardly any press . . . what? That man's show created stars we know today (B. Spears comes to mind). He was also active in helping others via several foundations. Now, Michael Jackson . . . his handlers have used and abused him--drugged him up so much that it is amazing he lived to 50, yet he continued to give and he continued to inspire and he continued to help. Thank you for your kind rememberance of a man who compares to none. I will ONLY remember the best.

I just want to THANK YOU for sticking up for yourself and the gay community on the NJ reunion. The entire time Theresa was talking I was getting so upset and when you said something I was like U GO BOY! lol. Thank you because I am sure a lot of gay men around the country were offended and to have the host say something meant a lot. You are a great host and I wish you the best! I'm the same age as Michael Jackson I use to sing the music of the Jackson 5 back and forth to Catholic School. I have been going around the hospital where I work singing the Jackson 5. Unreal talent, we where raised in a different time and place back then.
He may have taken an muscle relaxer and pain med combined and just gone off to sleep and never woke up. The muscle's relax and the respiratory system relaxes and fails to work cause it is to relaxed it can't. That is most likely why the pulmonary test and or pnemonia. Doc's often mix pain meds with these muscle relaxers and the person will just fall offand go to sleep and never wake up.
They have to take it as perscribed and don't over medicate.
No please no more Housewives of New Jersey. I'm tramatized. You are so funny the way you corrected the word cleanliness... It's not cleanziness as pronounce. My sister will correct any bad and broken english she is a freak about it. My dad was so smart a very high IQ and he would always do the same thing. I have one question did your crew who were filming alittle scared it looked like the one at the bar was bit scared of Teresa when she came back into the bar. I hope you pay these guys healthcare and disability insurance they might need it.

Very eloquently put, you are a class act. Michael Jacskson was 1 of a kind. I feel sad that my children will never see him perform on,(thank goodness for youtube). I think that people forgot all that he did for kids aside from the contreversy he was benevolent. Peole forget that this brilliant man did not have a childhood, and worked hard to be the best...he was. Perhaps, he felt such a connection and adoration for children especially his own because he did not have the opportunity to enjoy his own childhood. Honestly, what is a more beautiful sound than a child's laughter, a more amazing sight than a child smiling when they play. Perhaps he was living vicariously. Either, way not for us to judge, he was phenonmenal a magical enigma of a person that memserized every step of the.

Hello Andy!
I so applaud you for letting Teresa and all the viewers know that the word "gay" used in the manner Teresa's husband used it, is offensive!I hear this expression "gay" to describe something odd or ridiculous from co-workers and I find it so hurtful. I cannot believe that people are so insensitive that they do not get it.
It doesn't matter to me if Joe Blow has a gay friend who isn't offended by the term. Or if there are gay people you are not offended by the term. The point is that term is used in a derogatory manner and as long as it offends anyone it is offensive.

Love your sweet memories. I too remember 9/10/2001 in NYC. There were showers that mild evening while we were playing a softball game in Central Park. Fashion Week tents were up at Bryant Park-- our lives were in order.. The next morning, so chrystal clear outside, and then (you said it), the world changed forever. My favorite place, Lower Manhattan, shattered, and the WTC, buildings I worked in for many years, in ruins. I am so sorry you lost your friend, the beautiful and graceful Natasha Richardson, and though I am older than you are, MJ was part of the lives of my kids.... and who, among us, could not admire his great talent and sound, so unique.. And his 'Billy Jean"? wow. .. Finally, RIP, MJ.

I have no conflict over what Michael Jackson was to our world. His personal life, although sad at times, did not take away from the super star that he was. I hope that the media will respect his children and family by remembering the gift that he gave the world. His world was made very strange and small by all of the fans that so loved him. To live as he did is nothing that normal people can identify with.

Once again, Andy, you have written an absolutely beautiful blog in remembrance of people who have impacted the world in a tremendously positive way.
Believe it or not (since I was never really exposed to Michael Jackson's music when I was growing up), I think the first time that I heard "Man in the Mirror" was during season one of "Step It up and Dance." I've been watching and re-watching that clip on YouTube because seeing the final five dance to that song commemorates and celebrates the talent of Michael Jackson.
Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett's families are in my prayers, and I cannot believe that we lost two of the world's biggest pop culture icons in the same day. But, as cheesy as it might sound, as long as people are listening to Michael Jackson's songs and watching Farrah Fawcett's TV shows and movies, they will never be truly gone.

I am right with "Peg" in that MJ supplied the soundtrack to my life as well. In fact, those are the exact words I have used several times since yesterday afternoon. I have it posted on my Facebook as well.
I had to take a mini road trip yesterday and spent a few hours in the car. Several of the radio stations were airing tributes with nothing but his music. One station in particular asked for callers to state their thoughts. I have never called a station but for some reason I felt compelled then froze when I was told I was on the air----all I could muster up was "I'm a 46 year old woman and MJ has supplied the soundtrack to my life".
Thanks Andy for sharing your memories---I was so hoping that this tour would aid in his getting back some dignity for his talent has always been unparalleled----and I'm with you on only remembering his greatness.
Rest, rest well, Michael and thank you so very much for leaving us the best pieces of you.

Andy:
Beautiful words you have written. We have lost many fabulous, talented people who will live on in our hearts and memories.
I would like to address Danielle Staub. I think she should be dropped from the show. She is a sociopath and she could be dangerous. I think Bravo should obtain restraining orders for the rest of the cast as a responsible television network.

Andy, Your poignant writing about the last magical night in NYC was transporting & eloquent. Since I got cable 8 months ago following a loss of my own, you've been my "Bravo filter": a voice for the viewers - saying what most of us are thinking. You get to the truth but always in a fair, witty & generous, manner. As you carry on, one forgets you are still grieving the sudden loss of your dear friend, your beautiful city and probably other things as well.Your post reminded me. You are a good example of facing the losses in life bravely - not shrinking or minimizing them - but embracing the whole thing while hammering out a new way of moving forward. Almost Amish in my computer skills, I've never commented on a blog before but wanted to let you know lives are richer because of your willingness to share your thoughts. I hope you can sense the affection and admiration I feel for you - joining thousands of others who feel the same way about our dear Andy. This Real Right Wing Republican Housewife of Wisconsin loves you to bits.

Hey Andy!
That was a great story about your experience at the Michael Jackson concert! I guess it shows how fast life changes and how we should really saver every good moment that we have in life. You are very fortunate to have that experience to look back on…it’s a cool one.
Michael Jackson was one of those people who were a mystery to us all. He was very talented but equally troubled. All of the fame and opportunities that came his way...there was still something missing from his life that would allow him to be happy. That is just an observation! I realized by watching him on TV last night how gifted he was and how many hits he really did have! In tragic way this may be a big comeback and a sad good bye in the same.
Farrah Fawcett was a beautiful girl in her day. I will remember how brave she seemed to be during her battle. I will also remember what a great head of hair she had!!
Back to work!

As a teenager of the 1980's (I graduated high-school in 1986) I have to admit I was one of those who never really got into his music. I like a couple songs and that was it. The tragedy is that with all those who surrounded him, they did not give him the help he needed. It was obvious he was searching and searching for love and acceptance. That is a hard road to tow in life.
Farrah was beautiful...how courageous has she been over these past couple of years. She fought so hard but now she can rest and look down on us as a true angel.

I remember that day, too....Sept 10, 2001.
My brother had a grant application deadline he had to have postmarked by MidNight...so he went to the 24 hour huge post office across from MSG. Who should go spiriting past him around MidNight and hope into a car....Michael Jackson ! My brother commented on how strange it seemed....to have this lilthe of a man, go running by with a little wave on a deserted street. Little did we know...the day would get even stranger a few hours later.
Sidenote...Sept 10, 2001 was the FIRST day my Mom got email. Can you imagine your first two emails EVER being, " Mom I just saw Michael Jackson ! " and a few hours later, " The twin Towers were hit, we are fine, the phones aren't working, thank god you have email... "

Andy our family shares with you the sorrow of the loss of both Michael Jackson and Farrah Faucett. What a sad day to lose two wonderful people that we have lost far too early. Farrah will be remembered not just for her beauty and sweetness but for her immense courage in her fight to live. Michael, the loss of his music and yes his dancing is to huge to express. Never again will there ever be such an iconic talent. Michaels music to unify the world is the greatest gift of all in Black or White and We Are The World. He may be gone but his music will live forever.

Lets get down to the nitty gritty. What is this secret? What happened between Danielle and Dina prior to the show? Caroline made a promise not to say anything, but you didn't! A few of us get together to watch the show and felt very let down with how it ended. a few F-bombs and "Oh No They Didn't?" were dropped. Set us straight and don't leave out a single detail. Dish bitch!!!

What a sad and truthful reflection of your feelings about Michael - thank you for sharing. And let's not forget Farrah... She too was an icon and fought the good fight. The sky is just a little dimmer tonight with a couple of our stars gone.

As always Andy, thanks for sharing your life with us. What an interesting chain of events you describe. I had forgotten about the 30th Anniversary show. What a great memory you have of your friend, the city and Michael.

I am in shock, realing from Farrah and Micheal. Farrah was the reason I went to beauty school and Micheal was someone who I wanted to be being 2 years younger. I literally grew up along side him.
They both will be missed from my golden years

"The truth is that maybe Michael Jackson is in a better place. Maybe he wasn't meant to grow old. Maybe he really did not WANT to grow old."
I could not agree more. As sad as his passing is, it somehow seems appropriate. He is such an icon.

Andy, Wow, what a great memory. You are lucky! I agree about the magic. Michael Jackson was the only person that I would be star struck over.
Don't really know why, it's hard to explain. He's Michael!

Andy, that was a beatuiful piece you just wrote. I was about to comment on RHNJ part two..and now it seems irrelevant..although in time I will put in my two cents on RHNJ Part 2.
The sad thing is..I was thinking about my mom being a cancer survivor for 25 years and how lucky I am that she is still here..along with my dad.. Redmond and Ryan wont have that pleasure..but her struggle has made them better men..especially Ryan..I have always been a fan of his.
I am sad for the Jackson family, and his children.
I hope that you can thank your luck stars that you were able to expereince these people..it will make you a stronger person. Do I need to pop Steel Magnolias in my DVD player? Can we hit Ouiser now?

I want to thank you for posting this. Your experice, your perspective and your ability to put it into words will forever change my feelings about this man and perhaps life in general. For years I've been conflicted about MJ. I had his poster in my room as a teen and LOVED his music. Then all the allegations of child sexual abuse came out and I didn't like him much anymore. Sharing the fact that you fell back in love with him with Natasha the night before Sept. 11 is almost epiphanal.
