Oh, the horror.
Kate Middleton, Prince William, and their entourage are enjoying the start of their royal tour of Canada but adoring fans around the world have been shocked by their plans to check in at a — wait for it — three-star hotel.
Yes, just three. And tabloids in England were completely shocked and some appalled by the news.
The royal couple indeed has plans to take a day off from the tour and leave little Prince George and Princess Charlotte in Victoria while they have some time to themselves at what's been called a “dated" and "down-market" three-star property Coast High Country Inn in Whitehorse, Yukon.
The hotel is the most expensive option in the area, and naturally the royals would get the best room. However in this case, the nicest the hotel offers is the premium Jacuzzi king which has, you guessed it… a jacuzzi. The suite goes for $198 USD per night.
It’s ranked just number four out of 14 on TripAdvisor, and the reviews aren’t all glowing.
Food is served at the Deck, the only on-site restaurant. And reviewer Ron H says, “The new menu is sub-par at its best.”
Dale 504 from Seattle wrote, “The first room we were offered was really stuffy — it was really stale and didn't smell pleasant.” Cheri M says the rooms were “smaller than a cabin on a cruise liner."
And reviewer BucketBound went on a lengthy diatribe. After a description of everything wrong with the rustic hotel — including calling it "dirty" and "dated" — the reviewer cautioned guests to choose another.
There are some good reviews as well, saying the hotel is conveniently located, clean, and the staff is friendly. Many come here to see the Northern Lights so aren’t in their room much anyway.
The hotel was once a YMCA but has had multiple renovations. A reviewer, Natalie M., says it still felt like a YMCA to her and warned management to “get their act together."
Does all this sound worthy of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, considering they've stayed in some of the finest hotels in the world? Perhaps we should keep them all in our thoughts during this difficult time for the family.
