"Starts off like a small town marriage/Lovely wife and life, baby carriage/Now all the stars have cars, success of course/But it ends in Hollywood divorce, Hollywood divorce" — Outkast, "Hollywood Divorce"
Rumblings abound that Brad Pitt was likely left in the dark about his impending divorce until the day before Angelina Jolie dropped the paperwork, but it's sadly not that uncommon of an occurrence with couples in the public eye who break up. Hopefully he didn't find out in the way that some of these spouses did:
Katy Perry and Russell Brand
The bubbly pop star's 14-month marriage to the incisive English comic concluded with a dearth of laughter: "Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011," Katy told Vogue in 2013.
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
Britney's first marriage lasted 55 hours, so her two-year union to Kevin Federline was lengthy in comparison. But that didn't mean that it was more communicative the second time around. "I didn't give her an ultimatum, but I was trying to work stuff out with her, and she didn't even talk to me or anything and went behind my back and filed [for divorce]," Kevin confessed to People. "[I was] completely blindsided."
Hulk Hogan and Linda Hogan
The former pro wrestling hero had no clue that his wife of 25 years had filed for divorce until a reporter from St. Petersburg Times asked him about it during a telephone interview. He reportedly answered, "Thank you for the great information."
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise
"I didn't expect it," he told German television network ProSieben a year after their 2012 split, according to Us Weekly. After spending a lot of time trying to process it all, he came to the conclusion that love is kinda like the movies: "Life is a tragicomedy," he explained. "You need to have a sense of humor."
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise
Could the end of TomKat have been karmic payback for how it went down with previous wife Nicole Kidman, who told French magazine DuJour that their divorce was "a shock?"
Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli
In the amusingly titled memoir Deep Thoughts from a Hollywood Blonde, Jennie Garth was truthful about not seeing her divorce coming.
"[It was] not something I consciously expected," she wrote. "In fact, I'd say that I didn't even allow myself to entertain the idea that my husband may have reached the end of his rope, too. I understand, now, how frustrated he was at how unreachable I'd become."
Porsha Williams and Kordell Stewart
This phenomenon of unconscious uncoupling has happened to several Bravolebs, perhaps most poignantly to The Real Housewives of Atlanta's Porsha Williams, who revealed that she had no idea that former NFL star Kordell Stewart had filed for divorce until she saw people chattering about it on Twitter.
"I was totally blindsided," she admitted to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. "At the reunion I did feel some kind of way because I did want my husband there with me. I was standing strong representing for my family. But when I found out about the divorce, it was absolutely a surprise."
