A picture is now becoming more clear that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were struggling as a couple for a long time before she filed for divorce. Just after their 2014 wedding near their home at Château Miraval in the south of France, the pair winged away to the Mediterranean country of Malta along with their six kids to begin filming Angelina’s movie By the Sea. (Yes, the plot is about a troubled American married couple.) This was to be a honeymoon of sorts for the nontraditional pair.
Well, apparently things were already going south — and it was far from the romantic getaway they might have hoped for. People working close to the movie’s set reported to People that the pair seemed sad and removed from each other. “They hardly spoke when they were together,” a source from the set told the mag.
In Malta, Brangelina rented three villas for themselves, the six kids, and eight nannies who traveled with them, according to the report. Because of their high profile, the family lived in an isolated environment — the source said the kids played in the pool, but couldn’t travel around the island freely.
Adding to a picture of isolation and dismay, the source said that Angelina and Brad were “quite distant” from each other, and that when Brad had time to spare, he would go by himself to a local bar to unwind with light beer. Angelina did not accompany him.
In short, the source summed up the 2014 Malta experience this way in People: “It was not a honeymoon.”
