We slather on serums, get facials, and indulge in multi-step skincare routines. But do we pay the same attention to our hair? Should we?

"Hair is often neglected when it actually comes down to nourishing and taking care of it," notes Anabel Kingsley, expert trichologist at London's Philip Kingsley clinic. "Put the same thought into your hair care regime as you do your skin routine; use high quality products that don't only mask problems, but actually treat them - and use them consistently. Healthy locks are just as important to ‘ageing gracefully’ as a healthy glow to your face." Here are four tips straight from top haircare experts on how to keep your locks forever young.

Exfoliate your scalp: “The foundation for beautifully ageless hair is your scalp,” says Phyto National Director of Education Christyn Nawrot. She recommends that you exfoliate it at least once a week, starting by brushing your scalp with a natural fiber bristle brush. Then Christyn suggests giving your scalp a once over with a scalp treatment like PHYTOPOLLÉINE Botanical Scalp Treatment. “It's just like a mini facial for your scalp!” she says.

Focus on moisture: “Sebaceous (oil) glands on the scalp become less active as we age, making the hair slightly dryer, more brittle and less manageable. It’s therefore essential to restore moisture content in order to get a youthful bounce back into your hair,” says Philip Kingsley Trichologist Anabel Kingsley. She recommends using Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer pre-shampoo conditioner to really hydrate strands and deliver a rush of moisture to hair’s cuticle.

Combat fine hair with an anti-aging routine: Our individual strands of hair get finer as we age. “Unfortunately, the actual aging process causes our follicles to fatigue. Each little follicle becomes constricted and diminished in size- creating hair that is devitalized and less dense. Be warned, this can also happen at any age especially when exposed to free radicals and harsh environments,” says Christyn. Combat this with thePHYTODENSIUM Age-Defying Shampoo and Serum duo, which promotes denser hair with ingredients like black currant seed and walnut skins. Meanwhile, for fine and or thinning hair, Anabel recommends Philip Kingsley’s three-step Trichotherapy at-home regime.

Look at it holistically: “Realize the importance of a healthy, balanced diet, rich in protein and iron. This won’t only benefit your hair, but your whole body as well,” Anabel says. So youthful hair goes beyond the products on your bathroom vanity and straight to your fridge. Beauty bowl, anyone?
