Before Dolly Parton was world famous Dolly Parton, she was 18-years old and washing clothes at the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville when she met Carl Dean in 1964. Two years later, they married in Georgia in a tiny ceremony, with the singer’s mother as witness. They’ve now been married for 50 years.
Dolly and Carl, who remained intensely private while his wife rose to stardom, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on May 30, and will be renewing their vows.
"We're going to get married again!" Dolly tells People. ”I’ll have a beautiful wedding dress, 'cause I didn't have a big, long wedding dress when we got married and we’ve got a suit for him, so we're going to dress up and take a bunch of pictures."
The singer describes her love, who runs an asphalt business, as a “loner,” who has rarely been seen in public with her.
"He doesn't particularly care about being around anybody but me. He's just always asked me to leave him out of all this. He does not like all the hullabaloo,” she says.
But, she adds, "he's always been supportive. He's like a brother and a father and a friend and a husband and a lover–all of those things to me. I think he's kind of proud that we've been in it this long!"
The country music legend, who turned 70 in January, can’t believe how long she’s been around and says she doesn’t feel old at all and is still celebrating with friends.
“In my mind I think I'm the same age I was when I came to Nashville," she says. “I had a bunch of girlfriends over and we had Mexican food and margaritas and laughed our asses off and drank and forgot we were 70!"
Dolly is also releasing her autobiographical movie Coat of Many Colors on DVD this week.
