About six months ago, I heard the same story three times in one week. Each one involved different circumstances and people, but had a common thread—friends and colleagues had been in a situation where they couldn’t keep their eyes and minds off of someone in the vicinity, to the point that they approached said person and discovered in each case that they were wearing the fragrance Escentric Molecule 01. You read that right: There is a scent out there that attracts men and women to you like a moth to a flame.
To say I was intrigued would be an understatement. I reached out to the brand to get more information, and here’s what I learned—y’all ready for a little science lesson? Unlike most perfumes, Molecule 01 contains zero fragrant ingredients (like lavender or cacao beans or bamboo) and instead is comprised of a singular aroma molecule dubbed ISO E Super. Preferring to eschew the pomp and circumstance of the industry, Escentric founder Geza Schoen wanted to rely on chemistry to create a super clean scent for people who typically disliked fragrances for being, ya know, too perfume-y.
While Schoen was still in the tinkering phases of creation, he smelled ISO E Super in isolation—minus all the ingredients its surrounded by in most other perfumes—and he was obsessed with it. “I realized the ath the common denominator in all of the fragrances that I liked was that they contained large doses of this molecule,” he said. “ISO E Super is highly unusual, you can never get enough of it. One sniff and you want the whole bottle. It’s like a drug.”
As the story goes, one night Schoen and a friend decided were headed out for a drink when on a whim they decided to spritz on nothing but the ISO E Super molecule. And guess what happened? No sooner than the two had walked into a bar were they approached by a woman who came up asking, “Who smells great in here?”
“It turned out to be us,” says Schoen. And the rest, as they say, is history!
While there is no direct science pointing to why the molecule attracts people to one another, Schoen acknowledges that there is plenty of anecdotal evidence backing the assumption. So, like any good journalist, I decided to investigate the fragrance myself and have donned it off and on for several months now. The results? Every time I wore Molecule 1, I was approached by at least one person commenting not just on the scent, but more on the aura around me—What’s different about you? Have you cut your hair? Have you lost weight? You’re glowing!
The proof is in the pudding, people. Whether you’re looking to sign a deal, land a mate or just be the most popular person at the party, Molecule 1 is bound to help you get there.
