Following the tragedy in Orlando over the weekend, heartfelt demonstrations of support have popped up all around the world, from Tel Aviv to Sydney, and all across the United States.
One poignant example: Flight crew and airline passengers made sure one relative of an Orlando victim received as much comfort and love as possible to carry her through her grief.
This happened after JetBlue airline announced it would offer free flights for victims' family members and domestic partners to get to Orlando. The airline flew the grandmother of victim Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo, who did not survive the attacks, and flight attendant Kelly Davis Karas took to Facebook to share details about what happened when the whole plane rallied around the solo traveler.
"Knowing she was making this hard journey alone, JetBlue employees made sure to be at her side every step of the way," Karas wrote, noting another crew member stood quietly by the woman's wheelchair while they waited until it was time to board. The gate agent then boarded with her and helped get her settled. Crew members offered her a blanket, a pillow, a box of tissues, and water so she could be as comfortable as possible. "She was understandably distraught, but met us with kindness and gentleness," Karas wrote. "And gratitude."
But what happened next is when the "flight got truly inspiring." Karas said she had the idea to pass around a piece of paper to everyone on board to write a message of support for the woman. But instead of a quick note on the short flight, passengers each took their time to write deeply considered, long messages.
By the time the flight crew presented to the grandmother what they had collected for her, "we had page after page after page after page of long messages offering condolences, peace, love, and support. There were even a couple of cash donations, and more than a few tears," Karas wrote.
When the plane landed, the flight crew offered support to Orlando over the speakers, and offered a moment of silence in memory of the passenger's grandson.
Upon landing, everyone remained patient while "every single passenger" offered kindness and love to the grieving grandmother.
