One of the great things about America is that we have infomercials for literally anything you can imagine. Bibs for drivers that always spill coffee on themselves! Blankets that absorb farts! Motion-detecting electronic parrots that chirp when you walk into a room! And as we all know, the more ridiculous the infomercial, the more attention it gets. (See: The Snuggie, which sold approximately 20 MILLION UNITS.)
So FurKids—Georgia’s largest animal rescue—decided to take a cue from the television tradition and make an infomercial of their own. The no-kill shelter has rescued over 25k animals since its inception in 2002, and it is the only animal organization in the area that encourages children of all ages to volunteer (hence their name). One such volunteer suggested they make an adoption video as a lark. (“If we’d done any of this intentionally none of it would have been possible,” the lead actor said.)
While the low-budget infomercial is, indeed, hilarious (“You like black cats? We got the blackest cats you’ve ever seen. It’s like midnight inside a coffin over here!”), there’s nothing funny about the fact that the video made the front page of Reddit and racked up 1.5M views in over a week. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, donations have gone through the roof since the video went viral.
But there are still approximately 300 FurKids fur kids that need homes, and millions more across the country. So even if you aren’t in the Atlanta area, we hope this video inspires you to swing by your local shelter and find a new best friend!
