Fyre Festival Organizers Somehow Get Even Shadier, Screwing Remaining Employees

Just when you thought things couldn't get worse...

By now, it’s widely known that the Fyre Festival in the Bahamas was a disaster that blew up in the face of its ill-prepared organizers. As details continue to trickle out, it seems increasingly clear that organizers weren’t just unprepared for the festival, but still making decisions harmful to people involved.

Last Friday, 25-year-old festival founder Billy McFarland told employees that they would not be receiving their paychecks covering the two weeks prior. But even worse than that, he wouldn’t even officially fire them, so that they could begin to collect unemployment benefits. According to a report in Vice News, complete with audio from the meting in question, McFarland welcomed his employees stay on in unpaid positions. How appealing. (And having “Fyre Festival: 2017” on one’s resume isn’t exactly a golden ticket to future career opportunities.)

Co-founder Ja Rule was on the con fence call as well, saying at one point, “I’m on the phone, but I can barely hear you all because of this fucking hum." Aint that the thing with conference calls.

McFarland said, “I understand that this is not an ideal situation for everybody, and this will likely cause a lot of you to resign, which we totally get and understand. That said, if you want to stick with us, we’d love to have you and we’d love to work together and hunker down and get back to a place where everything resumes to business as usual.”

We can only imagine what “business as usual” even means for Fyre.
