This Gene Wilder-Inspired Wonka Burger is the Wildest Sandwich We've Seen All Year

Hold the ketchup and pass the blueberry jam.

"We have so much time and so little to do"—or wait, scratch that and reverse it: For "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" fans, there's so much to do and so little time, because a seriously over-the-top burger just got created in the late Gene Wilder's honor, and it's only available for the next few days.

With the recent passing of Wilder, who is also best known for his brilliant performances in "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles," Bar Luca in Sydney is paying tribute in a special way. The restaurant's affectionately titled Beauregard Burger, which gets its moniker from the Willy Wonka character Violet’s last name, is stuffed into a multicolored bun and layered with blueberry onion jam, fried onion chips, cheese and tomato soup jelly.

The bun was inspired by Wilder’s favorite song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (which his family said was playing when he took his last breath), while the other ingredients are straight from Wonka land. But you'll have to hurry if you want to try it, and get yourself on a flight to Sydney asap: The $12 burger is available only through Saturday, September 10.

It must be said that, unlike some of those other rainbow foods we've been inundated with this year (looking at you, rainbow cronuts, doughnuts, waffles, bagels)—which are clearly more about the number of double-tap Instagram likes than about sheer pleasure—this burger aims for joy and ingenuity, in fitting tribute to Wilder himself.

And in case you were wondering? Yes, some of the burgers hold a coveted Golden Ticket, a detail Willy Wonka fans will appreciate. The tickets are wrapped up inside the foil of 16 of the special burgers, and one lucky winner will get a free year of Bar Luca's burgers. As for the Beauregard Burger itself, we admit that it may not sound like the most appetizing concoction to those who prefer their burgers sans blueberry onion jam or tomato soup, but hey, as Willy Wonka himself said: “A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.”
