Anyone who has thick, wavy hair is familiar with the process—and yes it’s a brutal process—that goes into the washing, drying and straightening of their locks. Just a little background info: If I let my hair air dry, I look identical to the women in commercials (you know the ones) with hair so large and frizzy, it looks like she got electrocuted. So needless to say, I have a “process” and have invested in tools after years of trial and error—and maybe that process even included having my husband iron my hair on an ironing board at one point!
So the recent boom of hot straightening brushes was clearly something I was very interested in. Like a straightening iron, these electric brushes straighten out curls and kinks and smooth the frizz—but unlike flat irons, they still leave tons of body in your hair (for those days when you don’t want pin straight locks!) and they take WAY less time to get the job done. Seriously. And the results are on par with getting a blowout at a salon. You just air or blow dry your hair, run the brush through for three to five minutes, and your bumps and frizz are GONE. Not just for an hour either, but for the day. Seriously.
Given this boom, however, there are a slew of brushes out there claiming to get the job done…and many fall short of their promises. We’ve done the leg work for you and found the seven best options you can buy right now that actually deliver the smooth, silky, straight hair you so desperately want.
1. Head Kandy Straightening Brush 2.0
The prettiest brush on our list (it comes in pink and purple, too!), Head Kandy is also one of the hottest, heating up to 450 degrees, which you can manually adjust to the temperature that works best on your hair. Head Kandy's features also include infused ceramic plating, an auto shut off after 60 minutes and a locking mechanism that prevents you from adjusting the heat accidentally while in use.
2. Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush
Where do we start with how much we love the Amika? Created in Brooklyn in 2007, the brush offers heat-resistant, nylon-tipped bristles that are so gentle on the hair, it almost feels like a regular hair brush. With adjustable temps up to 430 degrees, a swivel cord and far-infrared heat, the results are not only smooth tresses, but also hydrated and bouncy hair. And the smoothness lasts at least 24 hours; for the next day, we recommend a few quick brushes to straighten and de-frizz, which shouldn’t take more than a minute or two. Did we mention it’s pretty to look at, too?
3. Apalus Hair Straightening Brush
Pretty in pink, the Apalus isn’t as dainty as it looks—the brush heats up to a whopping 450 degrees, which is ideal if you have thick, wavy hair. Oh, and the brush is smart, too, as each bristle tip maxes out at 125 degrees to ensure your hands and scalp don’t get burned. Other things we like: 60-second heat-up, auto shut-off after 60 minutes, and, oh right, more than 3,000 positive reviews on Amazon. Done and done.
4. FemJolie Hair Straigtener Brush
One of the best-selling straightening brushes on Amazon (with more than 1,500 reviews to boot), the FemJolie is both gentle and tough all at once. Gentle on your scalp and strands, thanks to silicone tips that done burn and easily glide through your hair strands, and tough thanks its 450-degree temperature that can tackle, er, straighten even the thickest, waviest hair.
5. Dafni The Original Hair Straightening Ceramic Brush
The Dafni is one of our highest priced brushes on the list (but it just went on sale!), and with good reason—it does not disappoint. Comprised of a heat resistant handle (no burns!) this 3D ceramic-coated brush also includes heat resistant safety tips on its bristles that protect your scalp. The granddaddy of the category—Dafni was the first to patent its technology back in the day—heats up to 365°F in just 60 seconds, and has an automatic 15 minute shut off. The travel option, the DAFNI go is also worth checking out. It comes with a detachable cord and sleek thermal cover case that will fit perfectly in your suitcase.
6. Revlon Salon One-Step Dryer and Styler
This brush has a drying feature that allows you to dry and style in one step—shortening your “process” even more! It includes three settings, cool, low and high, a large paddle design to accommodate even the fullest head of hair and it’s lightweight, especially when compared to your standard blow dryer. Bonus: The two-in-one capability means you don’t have to pack a blow dryer on your next trip!
7. Infiniti Pro by Conair Diamond Infused Straightening Brush
Conair offers a great brush at an even nicer price point. The combination of nylon, silicone and ceramic
bristles make this brush easy to sweep through your hair without pulling or ripping your strands (which
a lot of other brands do!). We appreciated that it has one of the larger size paddles on the market, allowing it to deftly handle a hefty amount of hair. Also, as one of our hotter brush featured, the Inifinit Pro can heat up to 400 degrees via three settings of low, medium and high.
