This week, Mel B filed for sole custody and a restraining order from her estranged husband Stephen Belafonte, reports TMZ. In court papers her lawyer filed, the "America's Got Talent" judge has explicitly documented the sordid relationship with her ex, which alleges a decade of beatings, forced sex and blackmail.
It was seven years ago that the former Spice Girl and Stephen, a self-proclaimed film producer, eloped on June 6, 2007. The two had only dated for four months before tying the knot - despite public records of Stephen's prior abuse and violence. At the time, he did not reveal that he had been once married before, to Nancy Carmel, for two years in the late nineties.
Just a few months after their nuptials, Mel alleged that Stephen choked her and slammed her to the ground as she prepared for the season finale of “Dancing with the Stars” in November 2007. Stephen reportedly felt that Mel was too chummy with her dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, adding that Stephen would “beat me down to let me know he was in charge.”
In one of the few happy moments of their union, Mel and Stephen welcomed their daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte, into the world on September 1, 2011.
The green-eyed monster revealed its ugly head again in July 2012. Mel stated that Stephen punched her in the lip before she taped a segment with Usher for "The X Factor Australia" because he was suspicious of their relationship. Mel told producers of the show she has an allergic reaction to shellfish to explain her swollen face.
Mel also revealed that Stephen punched her and pushed her down on a carpet just a day after her performance at the London Olympics in August 2012.
Things progressed into even more dangerous territory in 2014. It's the year that Stephen allegedly impregnated their nanny, Lorraine Gilles, who Mel had been forced to have threesomes with. The singer also learned that Stephen had been paying up to $300K for Lorraine's services.
According to the documents trauma led Mel to take an entire bottle of Aspirin due to “emotional and physical exhaustion.” She tried to call an ambulance, but according to her statement, Stephen prevented her from doing so and yelled, “Die, bitch!”
Mel also missed the first part of the "X Factor" finale where she served as a judge in December 2014. She returned the following night, and shocked audiences with what looked like bruising on her left eye socket and cheek, and scratches on her upper arms. She wasn't wearing her wedding ring either, and reports emerged that she had been in hospital.
On December 28, 2016, Mel B. says that she and Stephen separated. She filed for divorce late last month. Mel stated it took her this long to leave the abusive relationship due to years of intimidation.
Mel B filed for a restraining order against her soon-to-be ex on April 3, with the series of shocking allegations against him.
Now, Stephen has filed his official response to Mel's divorce petition, and he wants money.
"Belafonte is asking for spousal support, though it's premature to set a figure. In her petition she asked the judge to deny Belafonte support. He wants her to pay his lawyer's fees.
"They dispute the separation date. Belafonte says it was March 1, 2017. Mel says it was December 28, 2016. It matters when it comes to dividing up the property," reports TMZ.
