6 Easy Ways to Hack Frozen Waffles to Make Ice Cream Sandwiches, Birthday Cakes, Grilled Cheese and More

You'll be amazed what you can do with frozen waffles, a couple of basic ingredients, and a few minutes.

When the only exciting thing about your morning—besides the coffee—is the sound of your toaster oven going "pop!", it’s time to jazz up your breakfast. And what better place to start than with frozen waffles? Easy and convenient, toaster waffles can also get, let's face it, pretty boring. Luckily, they also lend themselves to simple, incredibly delicious hacks. Each of our six toaster-waffle makeovers uses only five ingredients or less. From Waffle Pizzas, to Mini Waffle Ice Cream Sammies, to Grilled Cheese, these savory and sweet spins are perfect any time of day.

Toaster Waffle Grilled Cheese

Serves: 1

2 frozen homestyle toaster waffles

1 tablespoon soft, herbed cheese (such as Boursin)

4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese

Parsley for garnish (if desired)

Toast waffles for 1 minute or until just barely golden in color. Spread herbed cheese on one side of one waffle. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Top waffle with cheddar and remaining waffle. Place sandwich in skillet and cover with a lid. Cook until cheese melts, flipping halfway through (about 4 minutes each side). Sprinkle with parsley, if desired, and serve.

  1. Mini Waffle Ice Cream Sandwiches

    Makes: 4 mini sandwiches

8 frozen mini toaster waffles (2 sheets of 4 connected waffles)

8 ounces ice cream of choice, slightly softened

    2 tablespoons sprinkles, if desired

2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips, if desired

    1. Toast waffles for 3 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Let cool in freezer for 5 minutes and use a knife to separate each mini waffle.

    2. Scoop a 2-ounce portion of ice cream on each of 4 waffles, and top each scoop with remaining waffles to create sandwiches. Pour sprinkles and/or chocolate chips into a shallow dish. Roll each sandwich sideways in toppings to coat ice cream, if desired. Freeze 10 minutes and serve.

      Belgian Waffle Breakfast Sandwich

      Serves: 1

      2 bacon slices

      1 large egg

      Salt & pepper

      2 frozen Belgian toaster waffles

      1 slice cheddar cheese

In a skillet over medium heat, cook bacon to desired doneness. Do not wipe out pan. Crack egg into bacon grease and cook until edges are crispy and yolk is cooked to desired doneness. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Toast waffles for 3 minutes or until golden. While waffles are still hot, place cheese on top of one waffle and let melt slightly. Top cheese with bacon, egg and remaining waffle.

    3. Toaster Waffle Pepperoni Pizza

    4. Serves: 1

      1 multigrain frozen toaster waffle

      2 tablespoons pizza sauce

      ¼ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

      4 pepperoni slices

      ½ teaspoon dried oregano

      Parsley, for garnish (if desired)

      1. Toast waffle for 4 minutes, or until dark golden brown. Preheat broiler. Top waffle with pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni and oregano. Broil until cheese melts, about 1 minute. Garnish with parsley, if desired.

      2. Birthday Brunch Waffle Cake

        Serves: 1-2

        3 homestyle frozen toaster waffles

        ¼ cup vanilla frosting

2 tablespoons of ⅓-less-fat cream cheese, softened

2 teaspoons sprinkles, plus more for garnish

        4 large strawberries, sliced

Toast waffles for 4 minutes, or until dark golden brown. Let cool. Stir frosting, cream cheese and sprinkles together. Layer: 1 waffle, 2 tablespoons frosting mixture, strawberry slices. Repeat with remaining ingredients to make a layer "cake." Top with more sprinkles and candle.

Spicy Peanut Butter and Banana Waffle

        Serves: 1

        1 multigrain frozen toaster waffle

        1 tablespoon chunky peanut butter

        ½ banana, peeled and sliced

        1 teaspoon sriracha chili sauce

Toast waffle for 4 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Spread with peanut butter and top with banana. Drizzle with sriracha and serve warm.
