It's not easy being Kanye West. The rapper and designer, who will cover W 's October issue, opened up to reporter Lynn Hirschberg about the tough life of fashun. The industry as a whole, Hirschberg notes, "has embraced him as a celebrity but not necessarily as the designer and creative visionary he believes himself to be."
The interview took place in June—well before the Yeezy Season 4 show and its ensuing backlash. But even back then, Kanye was frustrated with the haters. "I refuse people who write me off as some rich kid taking a hobby, fashion as a f***ing hobby or a fashion plate," he said. He added this unusual threat: "I will f***ing laser you with alien f***ing eyes and explode your f***ing head. Shut the f*** up—try to write a rap." He later laments: "I am misunderstood and there is no one in fashion that's on my side."
In lighter news, Kanye also dished on daughter North, who already has quite the fashion sense. "Now my daughter definitely picks out her own outfits and she will lay it down and look at it and say, 'This is not great.' And then she tries to tell me what to wear and what she likes out of the closet...I think she got her expensive taste from me," he said proudly. Check out more of the interview here.
