Why Is Katy Perry Dropping Mysterious, Glittery Surprises All Over the World?

She's sending fans on a highly Instagrammable treasure hunt.

If you were walking around just minding your own business, and you came across a glittery disco ball attached by a chain to a random item you passed… would you be intrigued enough to stop and investigate? Of course! You’d probably even snap a selfie, because if you didn’t, it’s like you hardly even saw it at all.

And that’s what Katy Perry is banking on as a promotion for her new single: The title of the song is “Chained to the Rhythm.” And to hype it, Katy (well, her proxies around the globe) have planted disco balls in cities around the world, chained to various items. The disco balls are connected to headphones playing the new track, and the range of locations around the world is impressive. Check out the map (but beware the link is temperamental), and here's a graphic of the locations:

And that's the whole point — to generate hype, and get social media buzzing ahead of the release, which drops Friday, and which Katy will perform at the Grammy awards in L.A. this weekend.
