Katy Perry Has Dropped Her Rio Olympics Anthem and It's Like a Global Group Hug
The video for "Rise" is an inspiring mix of international scenes and athletes coming together.
Katy Perry is out with her official anthem for the 2016 Rio Olympics, a three-minute song called "Rise" that is going to get stuck in your head and fuel your workouts all summer long. (Don't say we didn't warn you.)
The video features a colorful and inspiring mix of footage from the games, as well as international scenes depicting athletes training amid varied global landscapes.
It's fun, it's catchy, it's motivating ("I won't just survive, you will see me thrive!") — and it's getting us downright pumped for Rio. It also feels like a warm group hug across cultures amid so much strife around the globe.
"I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite," Katy wrote in a statement. "I know that together we can rise above the fear — in our country, and around the world. I can't think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together."
The song will serve as a soundtrack for NBC Olympics’ promotion and coverage of the Rio Games beginning August 5. Enjoy!
