Put your paws up, Little Monsters: Lady Gaga has returned. And the Mother Monster isn't holding back about heartbreak on her new single, "Perfect Illusion." The track, the lead single off her upcoming fifth solo studio release, is a biting break-up anthem that may have fans speculating if it was inspired by her recent split from fiance Taylor Kinney. The couple broke off their engagement back in July, and Gaga's latest ode describes a love affair she (or, at least her pop persona) felt wasn't all it appeared to be, AKA a "Perfect Illusion."
While the song may be nothing more than a song, it's difficult not to wonder if her relationship with the actor influenced the lyrical content. Case in point, the chorus: "It wasn't love/ It wasn't love/ It was a perfect illusion/ Mistaken for love/ It wasn't love/ It was perfect illusion/ You were a perfect illusion."
Gaga confirmed her break from Taylor shortly after rumors hit that the twosome had gone their separate ways in a heartfelt Instagram post. While "Perfect Illusion" seems to be about a relationship that wasn't ideal, at the time of the announcement Gaga's statement painted the split in a slightly different light. "Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break," she wrote at the time. "We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We're just like everybody else and we really love each other."
