There's every reason to be skeptical when you read a headline like that: Pizza in a Mug? In a Microwave? In 90 seconds?!
The answer, and we can vouch for this because we've tested it, is Yes. Yes. And Yes.
As for whether the pizza comes in some kind of demented kit, the answer is No. You make it from scratch with the most basic ingredients, and we bet you already have all or most of them at home.
As Gemma Stafford, professional chef and always-winning host of Bigger Bolder Baking, demonstrates in the video below, all you do is grab a mug and mix in these ingredients: 4 tablespoons flour, 1/8 teaspoon each of salt and baking powder, 1/16 teaspoon baking soda, 3 tablespoons milk, and one tablespoon of olive oil. Make sure they're thoroughly combined, and top off with your favorite marinara sauce (homemade or from a jar). We used two tablespoons of sauce, though Stafford's recipe calls for just one.
Then add toppings to taste: shredded cheese, pepperoni, basil, oregano, whatever basic pizza add-ons you prefer, as long as they don't need extra cooking time. What now? Just microwave for 70-80 seconds, and you're done. Dig in.
So where's the crust? Stick your fork in and you'll find it. Sure, it's no beautifully charred, bubbly Neapolitan-style number, but it's a crust of sorts. And it makes a tasty bed for the tomatoey, cheesy, delicious add-ons you've piled on top—just like a pizza crust should. If you've prepped the ingredients beforehand, you can mix them up in 20 seconds flat. So there you have it: Pizza in a minute and a half.
As long as you're willing to not get all purist about what constitutes a pizza, we guarantee you won't want to put your fork away until you've wiped the mug clean. Because we tried to. Yes, we endeavored to scoff at this whole thing. But in the end we ate, and we enjoyed, and we surrendered. And we think you will too.
