The Most Popular Dog Breeds Hold Steady, Except for One That’s Shaking Things Up

Watch out, Labradors! You've got some competition.

Every year, the American Kennel Club announces the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. And every year, the Labrador retriever comes out on top.

But this year…! Well, okay, this year not much changed. Because the Labrador retriever just won its 26th consecutive Most Popular title. According to the AKC, the family-friendly dogs are known for their “eager to please temperament” and “have even been known to save lives.” Meanwhile, the German shepherd held steady at number two, with the golden retriever at number three.

In fact, the top 10 remained pretty consistent, with certain breeds shifting up or down a notch. But the one noteworthy challenger? The Rottweiler. The large, loyal breed has consistently risen nine spots in the past ten years, effectively inching its way to #8 in 2016. Does that mean that in 2023, the Rottie will unseat the Lab? Only time will tell. (Literally.)
