We knew rose gold was hot for fall. But, when the coppery shade decked the eyes of everyone from Beyoncé to (save this for #TBT!) JoJo last night, it was clear that the hue's not only huge for hair. "This is a color that all complexions can wear because there is more than one shade of copper," says Keka Heron, celebrity artist and lead makeup artist for Revolt-TV. Let's review just some of the stars that were seen wearing the shimmery shade last night, proving that it really does work with a range of skin tones.
"Deep copper can be worn by darker and lighter complexions," Keka says. "Copper eyes give your look an automatic beachy, dewy, bronzy effect," she says. Beachy, almost-damp hair was another big VMAs beauty trend (we see you, Kim Kardashian West!), so it makes sense that the celebs would choose makeup to compliment that just-got-back-from-Malibu vibe.
If you're looking to add a little drama to the sun-kissed look, Keka advises pairing rose-gold shadow with a "great wing." Holland Roden, who had her makeup done by artist Elle Leary, rocked the look with glitter roots. Holland wore Pop Beauty's "Razzle Rose" on her lips; Keka says lip colors that are a close match to complexion tone (or "nude") also work beautifully with copper eyes.
If you want to amp up the drama on a copper eye, Keka suggests taking a cue from Beyoncé and addinging deep orange and medium brown hues to the creases.
"For the more dramatic look, I suggest red lips with a copper eye as well," Keka says. Tove Lo worked the combo last night. (She also wore rose-gold sneakers!) Makeup artist Colby Smith was in charge of the singer's cool-girl look.
"With copper eyes, don't forget to think about your cheeks," Keka says. "I love to use a bronze, peachy cheek with a little shimmer and highlight." Along with her spider lashes (they're hot right now!), singer JoJo demonstrated a peachy cheek on the VMAs white carpet.
