Meet Norm, the Kim Kardashian of Dog Selfies

And his owner Jeremy Veach, who (we guess) gets credit, too.

Kim Kardashian wrote the book on selfies. We mean that both figuratively and literally— Selfish is totally on our coffee table as we write this — and while Kim did create a thorough tome, there is one category of selfie she omitted - the dog selfie.  (And we’re not talking about the Snapchat dog filter- although we’ll loop back to that later.) Luckily, where Kim K. dropped the ball, Norm the Pug picked it up and ran with it (and presumably brought the ball back to her, dropped it at her feet and was keyed up to play fetch).

Norm wasn’t always a selfie obsessed Instagram star. Way back in the early days of 2012, he was but an 8-week-old pup adopted by Seattle-based photographer Jeremy Veach. Inspired by the success of Maddie the Coonhound, best known for standing on things, Jeremy began photographing Norm for social media. Soon after, artist and canine muse stumbled onto something they’d both become known for— the realistic dog selfie. What makes Jeremy’s technique different from the rest of us that slap on a pretty filter and mush our faces up against our pup’s to share with the world, is that Jeremy styles the photo so it looks like Norm is taking the selfie by himself, complete with extended paw.

Despite Norm regularly indulging in #SelfieSunday, he is no one trick puggy. The duo’s Instagram account is peppered with a variety of other photos: Jeremy and Norm on their rugged, nature adventures, Norm posed with a variety of props, and there are even photos that are an homage to Maddie the Coonhound standing on things, which are photos of, well, Norm standing on things. Jeremy and Norm’s highly photographic adventures may soon hit the road, as the two now have a bus, christened Goldie. We are sure to watch their travels documented via Instagram. And we’re not alone in following their exploits with baited breath. Their account that launched a thousand dog selfies is up from 24,000 followers in 2013 to 319,000 now.

Don’t worry, despite all the new found success and means of transportation, 5-year-old Norm hasn’t forgotten his selfie roots. He’s still at it with the selfie game and, like any seasoned selfie vet, he is no stranger to the previously mentioned dog filter. We look forward to following him as he continues this path and look forward to the advances the field of dog selfie-ography he thinks of next!
