Patricia Altschul on 18th Century French Dog Beds, Caftans with Pug Faces, and More

Do you think Pat is a dog person or...?

Confession: We don’t actually know how many dogs Southern Charm grand dame Patricia Altschul actually owns. All we know is that whenever the show takes place in her fabulous Charleston Greek Revival manse (The Isaac Jenkins Mikell House!) it feels like a full-on menagerie is running about.

While we patiently wait for Patricia to return our calls (HI PAT WE LOVE YOU!), an Instagram investigation will have to suffice. We confirmed that she owns two Pomeranians (Siegfried and Roy) and a Pug (Chauncey). But there’s also a Boxer (Smoochie) and a Lagotto Romagnolo (Monty)—both of which belong to her son Whitney Sudler-Smith. (That’s a technicality, of course. They are certainly enjoying the spoils of that #AltschulLyfe.)

While we might not have a complete rundown of Patricia’s canine crew, we do know that her passion for dogs is, uh, pretty serious (to say the least).

Evidence A: If you weren’t already aware, Patricia is launching her own line of caftans that can be personalized with your pet’s face. You simply send in a photo of your pet, and it will be designed and patterned on beautiful fabric with embellishment. (Your cost? $299.)

Evidence B: Her love of dogs extends from personal fashion to home décor. As she says on her Instagram, “Today I had the important task of taking photos of my dog beds, dog houses, and dog carriages for an upcoming article on canine accoutrements. This one is French from the 18th century.”

Evidence C: And, of course, her mansion features The Dog Room, “so named because of the collection of canine needlework.”

Evidence D: She has written a book calledThe Art of Southern Charm which—as far as we can tell—is essentially an homage to Chauncey:

And finally, Evidence E: Not that we're surprised, but each of Pat's dogs has his own Christmas stocking hung by the chimney with care.
