If you’ve spent even a little bit of time on this site, you are well aware that we are strong proponents of #AdoptDontShop. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters every year, and almost one third of those will be euthanized.
If your argument is that you want a specific breed—guess what? There are shelters for virtually every breed out there! Just search [BREED] + shelter and you’re on your way to rescuing the dog of your dreams. With that said, we will get off our soapbox and share with you the most in-demand dog breeds of 2017.
According to the Rover.com, the ownership of designer breeds (meaning a cross between two desired breeds, or “mutts” as we call them at shelters) went up 62% in 2016. Poodle mixes tend to be highly popular due to their hypoallergenic nature. The most sought-after?
Goldendoodle (like Carole Radziwill’s dog Baby)
Other hypoallergenic breeds that enjoyed a spike in popularity? Havanese, Yorkshire terrier, and the Portuguese water dog (as popularized by Bo and Sunny Obama).
And here are two wildly popular non-poodle mixed breeds:
Horgi (Husky + Corgi)
Chug (Chihuahua + Pug)
Meanwhile the most popular straightforward dog breeds are:
Bernese Mountain Dog
And… surprise! Pit Bulls!
We are so happy to see Pit Bulls coming into popularity after decades of being maligned by bad press. And here’s where we beg-beg-beg of you [*back on soapbox*]: If you want a Pit Bull, please adopt! They are hands-down the easiest-to-find breed in any shelter—and they make up a staggering 40% of all shelter euthanizations.
