You'd Never Believe That THIS Was Actually the Safest Place to Be in 2016

And it has been for seven years running.

Lots of bad things happened in 2016 — you probably don't need reminding. But there was actually one safe haven in a space that would surprise most people.

Ready for it? The safest place to be in 2016 was in a United States commercial airplane. In the whole year, there were zero deaths reported from crashes of American planes anywhere in the world. And that's for the seventh year in a row.

As The Points Guy notes, air travel is by far the safest form of transportation ever invented. That said, foreign carriers' flights have resulted in deaths, and there remains notably the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 back in 2014. Asiana Airlines flight 214 crashed in San Francisco back in 2013 — and although that's American soil, it was not an American airline.

Now here are the caveats: The statistic only covers scheduled commercial flights, and private jets and charters' safety record is not nearly as good. As well, there have been a number of injuries — including an American flight taking off from Chicago just this past October, with 20 souls hurt after an engine issue — but not deaths.

So while fear of flying is common, recent statistics have not born out those fears.
