This Chip Is So Out-of-Control Spicy, You Can Only Buy One At A Time

Trust us, you will stop at just one.

If you've already tried to take a hot-sauce bath, and licked ghost pepper ice cream that made flames shoot out of your mouth, and gone deaf eating fiery noodles, and even caused your whole building to evacuate when you microwaved a hot pepper, what's next? A tortilla chip. Namely, the world's hottest tortilla chip, a snack so scorchingly hot, it's only sold in a single package of one.

The package, it's worth noting, is shaped like a coffin. Does this chip have your attention yet? The new Paqui Carolina Reaper chip, available for a limited time, is made with real Carolina Reaper peppers, considered the world's hottest. “When you look at the Scoville Scale [which measures spiciness], no other pepper even comes close to the Carolina Reaper," Jeff Day, Brand Manager for Paqui Chips, told The Feast. "It’s over half-a-million Scoville units hotter than the commonly feared Ghost Pepper.  The Paqui Carolina Reaper chip delivers such a gripping tidal wave of heat that people can only handle one chip." Why is the company out to torture its customers? Because pain is the new joy: "After all, our name (Paqui) is the Aztec word meaning 'to be happy,' so we’re all about having fun!” says Day.

The chip will be available online at Paqui.com at select retailers starting October 1. The cost? $4.99. Yes, that’s for one chip. (and the "coffin" packaging it comes in). And if you can't stop at just one of these, you can always buy multiple packages—and keep an eye out for the next, even hotter version of the chip. “We love what we’ve been able to do this year with the Carolina Reaper chip. We’re always going to be pushing boundaries and would jump at the chance to make this bigger and badder next year,” Day says.

Meanwhile, here's Day having "fun" with the chip:
