Rules were made to be broken, right? "I'm really great at guiding people through relationships because my heart's not involved and I'm in control," Miss Advised's Amy Laurent tells Metro New York about writing the book on love, but failing to follow it.

Case in point: The New York matchmaker crumbled the moment her ex AB returned to town for a visit. "When my ex came back into town, I felt like a 12 year-old girl in a panic. You're not supposed to see your ex. ... And what do I say? I say, 'I can't wait to see you.'"

So besides avoiding your complicated past, here are Amy's other dating dos and don'ts if you're up for the challenge.

Ladies first. "If you like a guy, don't say no to other dates. Keep dating other people until you're exclusive," Amy suggests to women looking to strike love. And wait for him to do the texting first. "Let him initiate. If you start taking that role, guess what? He's going to sit back and relax and you're going to have to chase him."

Now for the men. To start, don't seem too eager after a first date. "[Reach out] maybe the next evening." And – Patti Stanger would agree – "obviously don't have sex early on."
