In the annals of Top Chef history, few episodes have caused as much of a stir as last night’s thrilling Restaurant Wars edition. Chatterers from around the culinary globe joined the Top Chef Live Chat to express their shock, dismay, and in some cases, glee at a fan favorite’s surprise departure. Tasha Kile arrived early to the chat and summed up the anticipation the room was feeling: “I'm so excited for tonight, I won a cookbook for tweeting today :) love top chef!” And we love you too, Tasha.
Before the show started, returning chat favorite and aspiring chef Jay popped in with some exciting news “I just got into culinary school!” The live chat applauded Jay’s monumental development.
“Go Jay, fun times!” shouted Kathy Bilodeau. 14packethacker echoed Kathy’s sentiments, “Good Luck Jay… I burn boiling water!” Amazing how in just its third week the chat room is already a highly functioning support group. And it’s still way cheaper than therapy! Here’s hoping Jay’s the first Live Chatter to make the leap to Cheftestant. Go get ‘em, tiger!
As the Tag Team Quickfire Challenge got underway, chatter Jonathan Brown went after the chef you love to hate, saying, “Lol, Alex didn't get picked. That's not much of a surprise.” Live Chat regular Judd Shapiro offered a prediction, “Of course, the team without Alex will win.” When East Coast host Bravo Monica polled the room on who would win the challenge, red or blue, the results were one-sided. In fact, one-sided doesn’t near describe the complete and utter landslide it truly was. “LOL I love how Blue has 100% on the poll,” giggled chat vixen Michelle. To the surprise of zero percent of chatters, the Blue team did take the crown prompting to Ruby to pat herself on the back with “yup, we called it 100%.”
In the Elimination Challenge, the teams had to pick one Cheftestant who would serve the front of the house. The red team’s decision to pick Alex was mostly greeted with kudos. “I think it is smart to put Alex out front. History of Restaurant Wars is front of the house goes home,” observed Barbara. LAB disagreed, pointing out that, “Alex screws up everything.” Everything but pea purée, LAB!
The Blue Team decided to draft Kelly as their front-of-house representative; they also decided to call their restaurant Twenty 21. Yet again, the red team drew the ire of the chatosphere when they decided to call themselves… Evoo? Bravo Monica quickly typed “Anyone else roll their eyes with the name EVOO?” Most agreed, but14packethacker wittily called back to a much-derided Season 6 restaurant name “EVOO - not as much as REVOLT.” Touché, 14packethacker, touché.
As Alex rudely addressed the serving staff of his restaurant, chatterer Val Forgett spoke out, “Wow, give a small man small power and see a big monster come out... Show me again how to wipe a table, Alex...” And Val didn’t s top there, audibly wondering “Is it really smart to put a guy who looks like serial killer as the host for your restaurant?” Ouch! But sun-soaked chatterer FloridaGal chalked up the Alex hate to the dynamics of Top Chef itself, “Every season has a person who you love to hate.”
As the Red Team prepared their food, the judges, namely Padma, got anxious. Funnyman Jason White put it simply “Padma HUNGRY.” As Alex mumbled his way through the dishes, the hate commenced. “Alex, what a train wreck,” cringed Chris. Diane RForgett agreed, posing “Is Alex REALLY a Chef anywhere?
The Blue Team had more cohesion in the kitchen, but the food wasn’t exactly a crowd pleaser. Even still, chatter supremus Austin argued, “I think anyone on the blue team deserves to win because they all cook great and don’t have the attitude behind them. Despite Austin’s wishes, the results had the blue Team seeing red.
“WTF? How could the red team win?” moaned Michelle. An unnamed Guest was oddly prescient “With restaurant wars you never know who will go home... it’s another ball of wax.” And when the axe fell on Kenny, considered a heavy favorite to make a run to the finals, the chat’s collective jaw was left noticeably agape. “OMG they killed Kenny!” zinged a commentator who called himself “Pea Puree.”
Frequent commenter Guest sounded off: “Kenny made a pretty revealing comment. It's supposed to be Restaurant Wars, not Front of the House Wars. Sucks that he went home. He has been pretty consistent compared to the others.”
Always ready to share his bit of wisdom with the room, chatterer Judd Shapiro tried to make sense of it all. “It's one of the classic Top Chef questions,” he said. “Which is worse? Not cooking good food or not fulfilling the challenge? If Alex didn't cook, he didn't participate. But, Kenny had the horror show.”
Alex needs to GO HOME!!!! He is a terrible chef and has pulled the wool down over the eyes of the judges for too long. Bring back Kenny, Bring back Kenny!!!!
I am the most disappointed I have ever been with Top Chef...The judges have not acknowledged the pea puree with Alex...and he won because of it...nor the fact that he didn't cook his meat last night... Kenny did a great job manageing his team...their problem was he had too much stuff on his salad...I feel he was trying to make more of what he had...since he let others do the meat...hence...Angela's job on the meat was not good...if they were going to send somebody home based on last night's performance...it should have been Angela...Bad Call judges....really disappointed!!
The decision to send Kenny home was so bad. He was a great head chef and, even though his dishes were not great, he made two of them. He is a strong leader. I'm sorry you got the boot, Kenny.
I can not believe Kenny is gone and Alex and Amanda are still there. It is so unfair. Both Alex and Amanda should have left a long time ago. What will they have to do to leave . . . make someone sick with the horrible food they attempt to cook? I have never missed a season of Top Chef, but I am beginning to get a little concerned about the who and why of the judges decisions.
I liked Kenny, but he did not listen to the judges. He was told that less is more yet he continued to make more than what was asked, even in the quick fire challenges. Instead of making one great dish he would make two or three not so great dishes. I think he was a great chef from the begining, but he did not listen or take the advice given to him from the judges. Bye, BYe Kenny! Next time LISTEN.
I think the panel especially TC was after Kenny and wants Angelo to win. Kenny put not one but two dishes out there and ran the kitchen. It is very sad to see someone with so much talent be judged so harshly. Ususally you would think that a nicer portion of food would be welcomed on a plate (i.e. the goat cheese) but to say that it was a horror show was absolutlely ridiculous. I am also shocked to see how everyone except Gail was able to see how much work was put on Kenny and in my opinion he should have been given credit for that. Alex completly botched up the service at the judges table and just crapped over everything else, he didn't even have the decency to say goodbye!!!! Both teams had great fish dishes and if this was a "Restaurant" challenge would you come back for crappy service and decent food or decent food and excellent service. No one in their right mind would have come back to EVOO. I think you all need to apologize to Kenny for this one and if your opinion of a good restaurant is to snub people and give crappy service so you can put a piece of fish in some sauce...you won't be in business very long. No one on that panel should be able to look Kenny in the eye and say he should have been eliminated.
I am so upset that Kenny was removed from the show. I really disagree with the judges on this one. I am a fan of this show, I just love it, and I can not even cook. Alex should have been removed. The rules were that everyone must cook a meal, Alex did not.
i think this sucks KENNY goes home, quite puzzling when its clear that there was plenty other people who should have left long time ago and not just ALEX, this questions my willingness to whatch this show!!
Kenny should not have been disqualified. He is one of the TOP talents left. I thought for sure with his talent he would go all the way to the finals. I'm very disappointed he is out of the competioion. Regarding, the blue teams performance Amanda should have gone home. Including Alex, she is the least talented. Her responsibility was to create and cook only ONE dish. She failed miserably at that one dish.
Alex did not participate fully in the challenge, he did not cook a dish or come up with a dish. The items he "prepped" had to be redone..what then did he contribute to the team's win. He failed at front of the house also and did not even know what he was serving. Kenny may had a few mistakes but he clearly had more culinary knowledge and should have been allowed to stay. Alex should have been sent home for not participating in the challenge and for stealing Ed's dish last week. He is clearly not a top chef.
NOW THAT KENNY IS GONE I HAVE NO REASON TO CONTINUE WATCHING THE SHOW. HE WAS THE ONLY REASON THAT THE SHOW CONTINUED TO HOLD MY INTEREST.
They always had a number one rule: If you don't follow the rules of the competition, you go home. They also always on every season, get rid of the one person who always Win Challenges and look like they are the best of the lot and they always keep the worst ones there. They really don't look for the Top Chef, so they should change the TV show from Top Chef to Culinary Art School of Cooking. They act like if you always cook good food, you can't have a bad day, no exceptions. I bet even Tom have a bad day where he don't delivery as good as he should.
The judges blew it! They did us all a huge disservice by sending Kenny home and keeping Alex and Amanda. I understand that he had a bad showing for Restaurant Wars, but his leadership alone wins over Alex's disjointed host performance and Amanda's bad food. Let's not forget that Alex did not even cook and Amanda's strip steak received constant criticism from both judges and diners. Kenny's beet salad did look a bit over done, but I can hardly believe that a busy salad trumps overcooked, poorly cut steak for loser of the week. I am seriously doubting the judges. Uber bummed.
I think Kenny got the short end of the stick, he was the strongest competitor this season, he had a lot to offer, and sending him home was a mistake.
I believe Alex rides the other contestants coattails and I really didn't like it when he stole that pea puree'.
Surprised at the chefs as well as the judges in their mispronunciation of turbot. It is pronounced tur-bit (the word is not French in origin). Also, the judges should follow the rules they set in place more closely. In Padma's own words, "Everyone must be responsible for a dish". A team's win, resulting in immunity, should not take precedence over the requirements of the challenge. Poor judging decision.
I was sorry to see Kenny go, but I was not all that surprised; he has been "slidin' down the slippery slope" almost from the first episode-He let Angelo get into his head, and that's sad, because I think he's got far more talent. My two OMGWATSH (Oh my God-Why are they still here??) moments are the "A's" (Amanda and Alex). When I heard Amanda say that she'd never cooked a Porterhouse before, I literally choked!! As far as Alex goes, he's a PP thief, and Karma will get him-Just a matter of time. Tiffany and Ed are my two faves, and I hope they bring back Bourdain as a guest judge this season. Regardless-I love this show-Please do not change it!!
Honestly, they should have sent Alex home when they found out he "ahem" stole the pea puree. Who else would have done that? He knew he didn't make it. He can't cook well enough. He's scary looking and if he's picked to stay instead of Ed, they're going to be making a big mistake. They never should have sent Steven home. Sometimes you have to wonder about the judges. Now Gayle is going to host her own show? I hope she doesn't eat all the desserts. She certainly can't afford to gain anymore weight than she has on Top Chef. As for Tom, I'm getting a little tired of his criticisms and the same for Padma. Who died and made her a food critic? Why is she even a judge? Leave her as the sexy host and give a winning chef her place. Richard Blais would make a good judge. I don't think Kenny should have stayed. He wasn't as great as he thinks he is.
So disappointed with this last episode of Top Chef. NOOOOO!!! How could you have cut Kenny? I don't understand the judges reasoning of purely judging based on individual episode only, not considering historical performance. Isn't the point of Top Chef to find the truly preeminent chef of the group, not just a lucky guy who happens to have a good day one particular day? This judging rule seriously needs to be considered. It's led to the "wrong" people getting cut off the show in previous seasons, and once again we see it occuring with this current episode. I hope Kenny gets the recognition and success he deserves even if he's no longer on the show, in the least he'd better win fan favorite.
I completely agree. If someone from the blue team should have gone home, it should have been Amanda. She was off her game and made one of the main proteins. That had to throw the whole meal off. Kenny has been consistent and he showed good calm leadership skills. I too am tempted to stop watching....
I agree...judging seems to be getting out of hand. Axing Kenny was the biggest mistake and really turned my stomach. I won't watch anymore of this episode..Not sure about any others. They need to get some new judges for their panel!!!!
You should be on the judges panel since you're so informed on Kenny and what he should have been doing...He was a leader and an excellent cook.. Maybe you should take lessons from Him..Bye, Bye Brenda!!!
I seriously thought about boycotting the rest of the season, but thought better of it...I'm still a big fan of few other chefs on the show (and of course Tom and Padma)! Kenny will be fine...he's ridiculously talented (although I would scream at the tv when he over did his dishes), has drive, and seems to be an all around great guy.
Good luck, Kenny!
I'm not sorry to see Kenny go. Don't get me wrong, I liked Kenny and I thought he was a good leader. But I don't think he was a good a Chef as he thought he was. He was consistently at the bottom of every elimination. I agree that Alex and Angela have to go too and I know they will, neither will make it to the end that I am sure of. All one has to do is make one mistake on these elimination shows to get the ax. Alex was just in the right place to save his but but his day will come.
