Sean Avery Talks Retirement on 'Watch What Happens Live'

Sports news? In the Clubhouse?

When NHL star-turned-fashion-maven Sean Avery joined Nicole Richie and Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live last night, we thought the talk would be all about runways and reality TV. But then, things got all Sportscenter on us.

During our online exclusive WWHL After Show, Avery -- who's had an on-again-off-again affair with the NHL over the past few months -- said his hockey days are over. "I am officially retired. I threw my skates in the Hudson," he said, noting the end of a 12-year professional career that includes time with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars, and most recently, the New York Rangers.

Avery's career was marked my controversial moves both on and off the ice, occasionally clashing with teammates, broadcasters, and NHL officials, most notably in 2008 when he was suspended for comments about another player who was dating his ex, Happy Endings star Elisha Cuthbert. That year, he also launched his budding fashion career, interning at Vogue before going on to work with Men's Vogue and helping Commonwealth Utilities launch a line at New York Fashion Week in 2009.

While his hockey career may have ended, his controversial comments have not -- asked "which NHL city has the most annoying fans?," he bluntly stated, "Nashville. I hate that city.

"It was false advertising right from the start," he explained. "You think when you get there that it's all this great music, and it's not. There's one street and two bars and I've never heard a good band there."

But it's not all bad in the Volunteer State. "But Manchester, Tennessee is amazing," he added. "I go there every year for Bonnaroo." So Radiohead fans, keep your eyes peeled this summer.
