You know, we always likened our fabulous Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio to a superhero, saving American kitchens from underseasoned vegetables, overcooked meat, and the overuse of scallops, but it turns out he actually saves lives too!
This past weekend, Tom joined several other renowned chefs at a charity food event for Art.Food.Hope organized by Ayelet Waldman and Alice Waters in Washington D.C. Long story short, Tom found himself next to Joan Nathan who found herself choking on some chicken. Tom performed the Heimlich Maneuver -- you know, that process printed on a sign in every eatery in the country. And, Nathan was saved.
We caught up with Tom, and he had this to say, "I did what anyone else would have done and was just happy to be there. I’m thrilled Joan's well."
Sigh. Now, commence creating your YouTube montages of Tom set to The Fray's "How to Save a Life." (Don't even try to deny it!)

Hello, I saw the reunion show and I saw that you saved a fello diner from choking. I also saw that you think CPR is something everyone should know...especially Chefs. Well I have been a CPR Instructor for the USAF since 1988 and I would love to come out and teach your next group of chefs and the judges (if they want to learn) CPR for free. I am a BIG TOP CHEF fan. I love to cook and my family thinks I should write a cook book. I'll call it "Doctor that "Stuff" up!" because I'm a medic and I make packaged food taste "better" so it just naturally goes together....anyway. If you want to take me up on my offer I would feel HONORED to do that for you, your chefs and staff.
Let me know. As we say in the Air Force...AIM HIGH.
Do me a favor...at the start of the next show. Ask your chefs to make sure they adhere to what we in the Air Force call our "CORE VALUES" 1) Integrity First, 2)Service before Self & 3) Excellance in all we do. 1 & 3 are self explanitory and 2 for the chefs would be interpeted as service of quality food comes before anthing else. Meaning if your dish comes out crappy...don't serve it. It is better to present nothing than to put out bad food.
Take care Tom....
