All eyes are on Lin-Manuel Miranda this weekend as he vies for a staggering 16 Tonys for Hamilton, which is already a record-setting achievement. His Broadway musical about American founding father Alexander Hamilton, set to a lively hip-hop beat, has been a runaway smash, and his rapping skills have earned him worldwide fans including President Obama. But it seems Miranda's got other thoughts on his mind right now. In the show Freestyle Love Supreme, which will stream on NBC's Seeso online platform starting June 23, video blogger Shockwave asks Miranda to perform a rhyme on the spot, with no advance preparation. The subject? Ramen. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the video is part of a series that was created by Miranda's improv group (also called Freestyle Love Supreme) and that originally aired two years ago on Pivot. But the Seeso series will include new videos too, including Miranda's ramen rap. As usual, the star's ideas flowed.
“We needed that ramen sauce,” he rapped. “We need the noodles with the eggs and, yeah, the applause! Ah, we don’t pause when we get that ramen, ah, once we startin’, we’re not stoppin’, we’re just hopscotchin’ to the next ramen spot.”
Okay, so Miranda is not getting into the delicious intricacies of ramen that have made the Japanese soup such an undying national craze over the past few years. He hasn’t touched on those slow-boiling broths that can take days to make, the springiness of the perfect noodles and the treasure trove of toppings that make the best bowls worth their salt. But his enthusiasm is infectious and will probably make you head to the closest slurp shop.
Meanwhile, here’s hoping Miranda will celebrate his inevitable multiple Tony with multiple bowls of piping-hot ramen.
