L.A.'s hottest new taqueria of the moment has just arrived, courtesy of one of the silver screen's most beloved villains. It's a collaboration between the actor best known for playing the lead in the Machete movies as well as for memorable roles in From Dusk Till Dawn, Heat and Sons of Anarchy—that would be Danny Trejo—and a culinary team led by consulting chef Daniel Mattern. It's called Trejo's Tacos.
The long-awaited eatery sits on the site of a former Taco Bell, which was remodeled into a sleek black building with a pretty outdoor patio. There are T-shirts and tote bags for sale, as well as Trejo's Tacos complex, buzzy hot sauce (a must for the table) and a Latin American coffee blend.
The food is as alluring as it is delicious, starting with a spicy guacamole made greener with jalapeno slices and pistachios, and a bowl of grilled street corn doused in chipotle cream and studded with popcorn. Those appetizers are wonderful foils for the soft tacos on offer, which include one with lettuce-wrapped fried Jidori chicken, a peppery tofu option with serrano chilies, beef brisket with cotijia cheese, and slow-roasted pork shoulder with fermented red chili sauce. And while you might not typically look to a taqueria for dessert, it would be wrong to miss the churros con leche ice cream sandwich with thick Mexican chocolate chip cookies.
Trejo's took so long to open that some people in the surrounding neighborhood thought it was just a myth, but so far it's definitely worth the wait.
