It’s Cold Out There! Heat Up Your Run with Winter’s Hottest Running Gear

Stay warm and run fast with these items.

By Liz Kennedy

Winter is coming! And that can only mean one thing: time for new running gear. I love any excuse to buy new workout gear, but a change in season is definitely my favorite. Winter running is brutal — it’s usually dark during your morning or evening workouts and it’s just plain cold. Finding gear that keeps you warm — but doesn’t overheat you — and also keeps you visible is tough. But that’s where I come in. I’ve found the must-have winter running items that will keep you toasty without adding extra bulk, so you can train with ease no matter the conditions. These picks are so hot, you’ll actually be excited to hit the road when the temps drop below freezing.

Extra Mile Vest

Running in the cold never felt so warm. Keep your core warm with this vest specially made with fleece in areas that need to retain heat and stretch in areas where movement is needed. It’s also water-repellent and has a detachable hood in case snow or rain starts falling.

Nike AeroLoft Flash Running Vest

Colder weather and shorter days makes running challenging. Luckily this vest was made to keep you warm and keep you in sight with a reflective graphic that covers the front of the vest and 800-fill feather-down insulation. And if you weren’t impressed already, it can also be packed into a zippered pocket and held with an attached strap if you get too hot.

Vizlocity Jacket

Stand out and stay warm in this jacket. With a slim fit that allows for comfort and freedom, this jacket is best for long runs on cold winter days. It’s also got a 360-degree reflective overlay for high visibility for early morning training runs.

Wind Sprint Jacket

You’ll want the temperatures to drop if it means you get to run in this awesome jacket. This jacket was made specifically for winter training and features Primaloft Eco insulation at its core, stretch fabric where it matters, and a detachable, reflective hood for those cold and dark days.

NB Heat Hoodie

This is an essential layer for any avid winter runner. Made from gridded fleece, with cutting-edge warming technology, this shirt will help you keep cozy on cold days. But it doesn’t stop there: it also has a scuba-inspired hood that will stay in place with a ponytail exit and fold-over mitten cuffs for extra warmth.

¼ Zip Pullover

Layering is the name of the game when it comes to winter running. A perfect addition to your base layer collection, this quarter-zip pullover wicks away sweat to keep you dry and warm no matter the weather.

Frost High Traverse Tight

These tights are made for the cold — it’s in their name. Made from a sleek fabric that traps air for warmth, these will heat you up even on the coldest of runs. They’re also high-waisted and super soft–a winning combination.

Windblocker Tight

Made with paneled wind-blocking technology where you need it most and warm-yet-breathable NB dry fleece where you don’t, these pants will keep you comfortable no matter the temperature.

Run With Me Ear Warmer II

This ear warmer is beyond soft and beyond warm. With a slit for your ponytail and 360-degree reflectivity, this is the perfect accessory for your chilly runs.

Run It Out Neck Warmer

Ever run in such cold temps your face hurts? This full-coverage neck warmer keeps your face from freezing but still allows for easy breathing with the perforated detailing.

Sport Essentials Pom Pom Beanie

Built for winter, this beanie holds in heat for those extra-cold days. The ribbing keeps the hat in place while you move and the pom pom is just plain fun.
