Jeff Lewis

Commitment Phobes

Jeff Lewis reveals what he's grateful for, and gives his take on this week's episode.

Sep 30, 2009

The last year has been a challenging transition from being my own boss to working with clients. When I met Brad and Seana Sherwood, I was really excited to work with them. They are interesting people with a beautiful unique property. I found them eccentric, but I liked that about them. As time went on, I started to change my opinion. It's not that they are not interesting or likable, but I began to realize that they are extraordinarily indecisive. I came up with a lot of great ideas for their home that they seemed to really respond too. The problem was, they never committed to anything. They often talked of their other home in the Hollywood Hills and how much they missed it. I started to get nervous, because I realized I had hours and hours invested in a project that may never commence. My suspicions were correct, because after 7 months, the only thing I have done at Skytop is the outdoor lighting installation. My commission on that job was $1400, of which I personally paid $250 to repair their broken sprinklers. With all my time and my employees time, I figure I lost thousands of dollars on that job.

Watching the show tonight broke my heart. A year ago this month I had to have our 19 yr old cat put " to sleep". It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I'm 65 years old & I cried like a baby. My heart goes out to you.

Jeff -

How you gonna completely make NO comment on the fight. We're rooting for you and I get that it may be painful but saying NOTHING about it is VERY unsatisfying.

What gives?

jeff...you and ryan have to decide if you have a real friendship..or a friendship of convience and opportunity...the magazine spread...ryan was wrong not to have you there as an equal partner...the links...well that is smart business...but as a real friend ryan should have asked you first..and as a real friend you would have said sure...real friends are rare and hard to come by...love the show and how it shows jeff adapting to the new real estate business model! that agent who said it was going to plateau and then crash again was wrong...it will plateau and then start up again...like it always does...feast or famine..its been that way my 30 yrs in the business

Jeff,Jeff,Jeff,

For starters you are not a fool. I actually think you are very intuitive. The problem is you are not trusting your instincts. Don't sell yourself short! What is also interesting is that there seems to be alot of Karmic activity going on. I am sure you are aware of this. You are talanted at what you do and I am most positive that things will get better..they always do! Good luck Jeff! I look forward to seeing the ball back in your court! Namaste~

Jeff, I know what you mean..the more you think you know about business, the less you know. I worked for a decorator here in Las Vegas, and his big problem..he never got a retainer..and did all this design work, only for the client not to buy merch from him..and they head to Penneys or Home Depot. As for the Ryan situation, I feel for you; its tough when one partner is more finacially sucessful than the other, especially in this economy. It also doesn't help that you had a personal history with Ryan, which make things more painful. I hope that in future episodes, things may be resolved..but you are not in your comfort zone..and it sucks. Good luck..love the show!

Not even one word about Rayn?

jeff your an amzing designer but when people r ready to make a firm decision it dosent take 7 mo to do. they werent ready. i would have stopped trying at month 3

I feel B & S did know you had the skill set to re-do the house But had no cash to do the work, I think they liked the CAMERA on them!

a fan of show tommy

Jeff, I think it shows incredible graciousness on your part that you are looking past your frustration with these clients and seeing this as (yet another) life lesson. Having been self-employed for almost 20 years, I too have learned some lessons the hard and expensive way, but that's the risk you take as boss. When I think of how many people I've worked with though, the accounts I've lost money on are far and few between, and I try to focus on that.

I think you were used as a vehicle for them to get on TV as well. Seriously, what other designer would humor them by wearing PJs and coming over for dinner? Brad's a comedian and I'm sure that while they wanted design work done, it didn't hurt that their affected quirkiness would be televised.

Trust your instincts Jeff; also, you rock!

I love Jeff Lewis....I admire his blunt brutal honesty and very dry humor. When is Jeff's birthday? Being a retired Special Education Teacher that taught children with emotional/behavior disorders for thiry years, I see a lot of underlying, unresolved issues in Jeff's personality. I must admit you either love him or hate him. There is no gray area with Jeff. I watch his show dilegently every week and love all the drama(smile). Hope Jeff will take a few minutes from his busy schedule to say hello to me( I one of his favorite fans)

Claudette

Jeff, they wanted to be on TV! I thought they were kind of creepy...... Anyway, all the best - I love what you do!

Hey Jeff I really enjoy your show. I also deal with people that cannot make up there minds and I work with all men. It is always a challenge. I am a nice jewish girl from Rhode Island and I think you are great!

OMG Jeff! Those two owners were so annoying, I almost couldnt stand watching it. You handled their passive agressiveness with grace and patience..I would have lost it when he handed me the recycled flower- WTF! Good Job!

Jeff, This happens to all of us in business and it is hard to cut your losses. But I want to know where things stand with Ryan. I don't think either of you are wrong It's just a difference of oppinion. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree. Love the houses and love the show.

Jeff,

After watching the episodes with Brad and Seana, it seemed like they were stringing you along to make sure you would be back. I would bet money that they think you are cute and would want a threesome with you. Be careful. Remember, they did have you come over in you pajamas.

I just wanted to tell you that I think you made the right decision with ryan. I imagine how difficult that must have been having been through a similar situation myself. I wish you all the best in the world. I love your show and your sense of humor is fantastic. Good luck to you in everything you do.

Jeff I think you are great So Funny pity i'm married and not a male but it made me sad to see things fall aprt with Ryan Please work it out and get rid of that negative energy hint certain clients so you can go to a better place

Jeff, Yep Brad and Seana just wanted to be on TV and wasted your valuable time. I guess you just have to entertain every client that will garner you revenue.

The Ryan issue I feel you handled well but we'll see as your show progress.

Aloha

Wow! Good for you! Not bailing out and taking it as a lesson learned! I would so love for you to design my home and I promise, no pajama parties or giving you a electrical wire flower! That was tacky on their part. I am sorry about what is going on with Ryan and I hope things will work out for you two - you have known each other too long to let this get between you. Take Care and God Bless You! Love your show!!

They sure looked like complete fools last night. They should be embarassed to string along any professional especially knowing that this would be on tv. Lesson learned. Looove the show!

Jeff, I totally believe they wanted to be on T.V. From the beginning with their PJ party to their need to have you there all the time. Another commenter said it best-they kind of creeped me out. I agree with you, they have way too much time on their hands!

When I started my design business my biggest fear was to give away all of my ideas to a potential client and have them say 'thank you' and then purchase the items themselves and implement my ideas without me. I've had to have my guard up a bit and turned down some jobs because of that fear but I think I saved myself a lot of hassle and money in many cases too!

Your clients should be willing to pay you a fee upfront knowing the caliber of your work! :)

How can you like people who basically took terrible advantage of you and cost you thousands of dollars? They are not stupid, I'm sure they were well aware of the time and energey you spent and to ask you to pay $250, that's just petty.

The stripper and her hubby from Skytop come across as more than a little nutty!

Jeff, as "tough" as you may seem on the outside ... you really are such a "soft" & "caring" person because so many High-End Designers like yourself would have immediately walked away ... and you didn't break up with them after all that!

I think it shows your strong dedication and professional commitment to clients ... because you are "Jeff Lewis".

Go Get 'Em!!!!! So love watching you!!!

I think Jenni and YOU need to make an appearance on the next Sex in the City movie. You could make over Big and Carrie's NY place. Hmmmm.

I'm glad you broke-up with Brad and Seana, not so happy about Ryan. I think Ryan is the real thing, GENUINE! You're the detergent and he's the fabric softner. :-( Jeff, I understand how challenging it must be to be the constant Giver. I hope you find a hunk can GIVE you all you deserve! Anxiously awaiting next week's episode.

Being an Architect myself, I know how tough it can be to deal with "potential" clients. I have found that many will try to pull design information out of you without having to pay for it. It's kind of like asking a psychiatrist about the dreams you've been having.

I think retainers are very important. It is also important that an initial consultant fee be charged to start the business arrangement off on the right foot while also covering for your time. Surgeons and Lawyers do it, why not Architects and designers? It seems that our profession has gone by the wayside in America. Television and the advent of the do-it-yourself warehouse supply chains have created an idea that ANYONE can do this. While this may be true to some extent, most people who tackle design quite frankly don't do it well.

Design is a very difficult thing to do and we as design professionals should be respected enough much like the other professional careers. I have seen clients that try to dangle the carrot in front of oneself with the dream of getting the big prize; later to find out it was just a hoax. What you end up with way too many hours spent on something that never comes to fruition. A good test, is to see how these potential clients behave at first. If they want you to jump through hoops right off the bat, then expect them to be problematic. Retainers will curb this served/servant mentality and keep you at the level a design professional should be; at very high regards. Afterall, aren't we improving one's constitution without the need for prescriptions, judgements and other things. Hopefully we create spaces that enrich our clients lives; something an aspirin couldn't do.

Love your show and keep up the fantastic work.

-colbi

Jeff, when you are asked to go on your first date in your PJ's u had to know something was up!! They should be ashamed of themselves wasting your time like that, be careful I bet it will not be the last time you run into wanna be TV stars!!

You are right where you are suppose to be. Learning and setting healthy boundaries with yourself and others. We all have these opportunities sometimes we handle them well, other time Not So Good. Love you and Jennie together ... love your sense of humor. I hope that the show is filling in the blanks for you on the financial side of things. We should be grateful we aren't in the Sudan being raped, tortured, driven from our homes and if gay shot. Puts my life in the proper perspective. You have lots to be grateful for Jeff and we love watching you deal with crap not many of us could even dream of.

Do I connect a love connection between you and Jenni?

Jeff, While watching the program last night, it was apparent that the owners of Skytop were not serious. In fact I told my sister that they were grandstanding for the cameras. They wanted their 15 minutes of fame and used you to get it. Glad you made the decision to kick them to the curb. On the subject of Ryan. None of us truly knows what is going on with you and Ryan. I hope you and Ryan can work this out, because you have a history. Sometimes friends have little bumps in the road. Don't let the bump ruin your friendship, but keep an eye on situation and it will work out the way it needs to. Let me give you a piece of advice when you get stressed. Remember you are too blessed to be stressed. Focus on what you have and not on what you lack. Good Luck Jeff.

Pardon the pun...

Bravo to you on all fronts.

Clarity and awareness, aaah what bliss.

Your work is beautiful, just keep doing what you do!

Jeff, first I would like to say that "I REALLY LOVE YOUR SHOW"!!! Been a big fan from the start! You remind me a lot of my self. Big perfectionist to the tee!! Think you are fantastic, really sad about the Ryan situation. I see totally where you are coming from and I would have reacted the same as well. Hope yall two have meshed things out because I can tell just by watching the show, that both of yall really care about one another. Its hard to loose someone so close to you. Take care and can't wait till next week.

God Bless!!!

jeff...

love that you are still gracious when talking about ryan... the ability to admit to(and laugh about) your own faults and still compliment others when you are down is admirable... even if you do "pray for time you can make fun of people"(squirt squirt goes the mouth spray)

...still team JEFF!...

Jeff, Pretty clear that Brad & Seana didn't have a pot to piss in and merely wanted their 15 minutes. Sorry it took you so long to see that.

love love love your show and you're funny, cute

Jeff, I've been a contractor for 20 years and as soon as you said you were doing landscape lighting at skytop, I knew they didn't have any money. I think they just wanted to hang out. The best and worst part about the business is the clients. After a few years of contracting work, I think you'll be dying to get back to flipping. I really enjoy the show and wish you continued success.

Jeff, you're my favorite Bravo man!! I love how honest you are, even with Ryan. You handled him so well. Congrats on your success, you deserve it. Love everyone on your show!!!

Just want to say your show is one of the highlights of my week. This year has been, by far, the best ever. It's sad you had to lose so much of what you'd built but what we found at the bottom of that landslide was your amazing lovable self! I hope you make a zillion dollars this year but that the money does not steal this incredibly likable guy away from us again.

The thing with Ryan - I totally get where you are coming from. I hope you two can figure it out and remain friends but who knows. Business plus friends/family is always a little difficult.

Good riddance to those two crazies with the landscape lighting. Ugh!!!

I wish I could have a mini size JEFF,so that I can put you in my pocket. So,when I need a good laugh,I just pull you out and you say something hilarious and make my day.I love you and your gang

Jeff - Let me start by saying I think your well intended in your actions. You just hate to be vulnerable!!! I get that.... as I am the the same way! I've watched your show from the start and have just LOVED it! You have really grown in the last year and you realize you don't have it all figured out. I love your relationship with Jenny and especially Zoila. I loved the episode where one of your employees was telling you why he was late to work. The look on your face as he was telling you he had to win at checkers was priceless! Its ok to be a hardass - but let the ones you love see your softer side as well! Love ya Jeff

Hi Jeff,

There was something that your problem clients said that bothered me and I'd like to know if you picked up on it or if anyone else out there did. I think it was Brad who said this is why I hired your type - or your kind - I can't exactly remember the phrase but there was something there that smacked of prejudice. Maybe I'm being too sensitive ... did anyone else wince when they heard this? And OMG these clients have way too much time on their hands. Seana's fake laughs ( Haaaa! Isn't Brad's flower clever!?) make me gag. Run from these people Jeff. RUN.

Jeff,

I didn't know your dad was gay also how you guys get along ?

I know what Jeff is going through with Ryan. We helped someone who we were suppose to be partners with in our business which we have been doing for 20 years and the guy went out on his own behind our back and was competing against us. Its a sick disgusting feeling to know that someone who you have helped stab you in the back like that. I Hate you Chris Gifford.

Jeff,we were not happy to see how you were treated on the belair job. Will there be any up comeing jobs in palm springs on season 4 ?

LOVE,LOVE,LOVE You and your show. I am VERY sad that you and Ryan seem to have gone your separate ways. You are both so talented and have such exquisite taste. Maybe the last episode would be that you and Ryan get back together. I hope! Don't push him away. He is adorable and you know you love that baby. Still laugh to myself about all the things you taught Chloe. Lighten up world, that IS FUNNY STUFF! Get Ryan back and BE NICE TO HIM.

Jeff, I think it is amazing how open minded you are to eccentric people. I have a son with similar disorder to yours and he is 9. I hope when he is older he will be able to adapt to his enviroment as well as you do. I also want him to have you "this is who I am, deal with it" attitude. You do not change who you are for everyone else but help people see you mean well. I love watching your show and if you are ever in the midwest HELPP! I am trying to remodel a very old farm house...OMG you have no idea.

Jeff,

Best show on TV. I live in Nebraska, the most conservative and scary place on the planet. What I would give to have you as my neighbor or best buddy. You , Jenni and Zoila are delightful. It's the best hour of my week. I've even turned a couple of my conservative friends on to you. My favorite saying now......"OMFG". Good luck with Ryan. Stick to your guns. You are a good man, taking good care of those around you.

I felt hurt for you with the Ryan situation. You may be wrong about him, but your gut doesn't lie. Your father was right too possibly. I've been betrayed by a loved one and know how that hurts. I hope he won't keep you from seeing Chloe. Brad and Seanna are actors and possibly swingers. You are a cutie Jeff and I think they both wanted you. EWWWW! Zoila and Jenni are so funny, I love your relationship with them. The assistant with the ponytail has no ambition which is I guess what you wanted and the intern is a doll. Those shorts were entirely too short though for work.

Fan from Georgia...

Jeff I love you and everyone else in your circle. Funnier than any sitcom. And of course you're so uber-talented.

I used to be a Brad Sherwood fan from his work on "Whose Line...". I'm sure he's still funny and talented, but I see that he and his wife are quite petty. I couldn't believe she so condescendingly references the tray of litter and says, "no, *this* is *not* Jeff Lewis." ...ugh... gross.

But you maintained... you did good!

Keep up the great work.
