Sarah Berkman

Leaps and Bounds

Sarah shares her thoughts on the new office situation.

July 7, 2011

Another fun year with the Jeff Lewis Design office has passed and let's just say it has been interesting. Jeff's business has taken a huge leap of success with a great deal of traveling for design consultations as well Jeff's various speaking engagements.

There have been many changes in the last year with our new office/Jeff's new crib, including new seating arrangements. I happen to love Jeff's dining room table being my new desk. I have the most arm room out of anyone in the office!

While Jeff is out of town on business, he has given his staff much more responsibility to hold down the fort. I felt at the time, that I did a wonderful job with my duties given, but according to Jeff, that's not the case.

.... you're adorable, you make the show watchable ....

: )

Dear Sara,I want you to toughen up.I have been like you all my life.At age 55 the kind thing has not served me well. You are young enough to change(as much as I hate to see it).My Family Bullies me still.I know Jeff is or has let you go.You should have let him go.Last night he said"I don't Know how the poor thing will work".Well just for your information,I'm sure they are lined up to hire you.Not just your beauty, and personality, but for your brains too.I'll give Jeff that.He did teach you some things.Good Luck

I remember the episode from when you started working there and you spilled your coffee in Jeff's car and I about died for you. I thought for sure he was going to scream and yell.....but he didn't. He said he loved you because you were like a cartoon character and always made him laugh. You are the funniest on the show and deserve to make a few mistakes for the crap you take from the rest of the team.

Hi Sarah, I couldn't believe that Jenni suggested to Jeff that he should fire you that's not even jenni's place to make that decision. And jeff treated jenni like crap as well. And as for Gage the jury is still out on this one, but I wish you all the best and you deserve to be treated with respect and not to be someone's punching bag

Sarah you are so hilarious!! I hope you don't leave the show because you crack me up!! "Sweet potatoe fries, what what!" lol!!

Sorry Sarah but you need to go. YOu may be sweet but that is not a job requirment. Best of luck!

Wow! Better thank your lucky stars that Gage is not your boss even though he obviously is talking in his ear. Seems he has an EXTREMELY critical eye on you as well as other staff and maybe life in general. Jeff seems to really be listening to and hanging on to his every word. Watch out, Jeff. You will probably be the next to be placed under his microscope. Having him on the show has drastically changed the tone of the house. Gage needs to get over the 'being put out' with others and the 'knowing looks' when anyone makes a mistake. His superiority complex is nauseating. Jeff's yelling this season is coming across as trying to impress Gage with his power.......or abuse thereof. Power is knowing that you can, but choosing not to. What used to come across as 'snarky' is now just damn mean and tantrum like. Sarah, do you really want to put yourself through this? Your personality will change to endure the abuse. It's not worth it. Jenny used to be so fun and quirky and now just seems as if she's taken one too many Zolofts to endure the yelling and abuse. Sorry, but true. Not sure I can continue to watch this year. Leave the love life and the bravura off the show. Sarah, write down everything. Jeff, why not try having a morning meeting and having Sarah jot down everything she is to accomplish that day.....or email or text.

You look amazing, how did you lose so much weight?

Its so sad to see Jeff take out his own personal frustrations, insecurities and lack of self respect out on you and the rest of the staff. Environment is way too toxic for me. However, I would reccomend that you walk around with a Pad attached to your hip so you can make notes and forget less, try it, it really works! Jeff needs a chill pill!!

You do not deserve to be treated that way! How can someone make up excuses for behavior and still expect his staff to be enjoying what they do? His bullying is a form of office harassment and the exploitation of his maid just to make him feel superior is another way of showing the world how weak he is really is! Threaten a lawsuit and watch how he will change! If not, find a new job!

Oh Sarah, my heart goes out to you. I know how hard it can be to be tough on others in your employ, in this case lazy construction workers. It's a shame you have to be strict and stern for others to do the job they agreed to do and are being PAID to do. Unfortunately, the person who will ultimately be responsible for their laziness is the person in charge, in this case you during Jeff's absence.

I was in your shoes many years ago. Although I realized I had the right and the responsibility to hold employees accountable (in my case as a hotel manager), I didn't feel comfortable with the necessary discipline that went with the job. However, it comes down to you or them! If you allow them to be lazy and irresponsible, they will be taking the money out of your hand and the food off of your table.

I am a reformed "sweet" person who wanted people to do the right thing because that's what I would do. Unfortunately, that's not the real world. You will be AMAZED at how you can turn this around, regardless of where your future career takes you! I became a "b*tch" because the employees' performance demanded that of me. Trust me . . . it becomes almost second nature once you realize everyone does not have to like you, but they most certainly have to respect you and take you seriously. Best of luck to in the future.

You are young, and this is a good life lesson for you. You will become more comfortable being assertive, even aggressive, as you force yourself to take the steps to become so. It will serve you well. And remember, "they" are making it necessary for you to act this way!!

Well, I would hire Jeff Lewis to redesign my home, but mainly so that I could see your smiling face! You add class and beauty to the office and work sites, and Jeff will never find a sexier, more classy beauty than you. The mistakes you made were pretty minor, and your kind demeanor more than makes up for whatever shortcomings he perceives you to have. I vote for a Sara Berkman show!

Well I certainly hope that you are not the one fired! It's refreshing to see someone who is so sweet and kind - especially because that very attribute drives Jeff crazy!!!LOL

Unfortunately, I think you are one of the two employees terminated this season. You are very sweet and likeable, but not tough enough to work w/Jeff. You will find your niche elsewhere. Good luck.

You seem like such a kind hearted person that wouldnt hurt a fly but in the business world that kindness can be taken for weakness. You were given clear instructions to be tough and be the project manger to push the contractors along but you clearly dont have it in you to be that person. You dont take yourself seriously how can the workers take you seriously.

In the Season opener you portrayed it to Jeff that you would push the guys but you were outside posing for pictures with the workers. Then you became angry when the client called yelling about how slow things were going. The contractors see you as eye candy because you essentially dont do anything when you are there but walk around and take notes with or without jeff. Well without jeff you will pose for pictures. We are talking about jeffrey lewis here, if you cant do the job, family or not, you will be replaced.

And you are so much fun too!
