Learn, Grow, and Succeed

Trace thanks Jeff for teaching him so much.

Aug 10, 2011

As I sit down to write this blog, I can't help but think about all of the memories I have of working with Jeff Lewis. Although many of you might be surprised, they are all relatively happy and fun moments we've shared. In the truest sincerity, I am very fortunate to have worked for Jeff, and I thank him for the opportunity he gave me. Not in a way a reality television contestant thanks the show's producer, but the way a son would thank his father for teaching him all he has to know. I was able to work really closely to someone I admire, and through our journey together I learned so much from him.

I think that with any job, you go into it hoping to learn, grow, and succeed. I definitely achieved all of those things while working for Jeff –- and he had a big role in helping me accomplish them. There was a time I sensed my opportunity of progression slowing down, and I felt I would be happiest leaving my position and finding something where I could continue to grow. I wasn't sure when or what that would be, but I knew it was in the cards for me. I think Jeff sensed that in me and felt like I had lost a spark.

I hadn't anticipated leaving as soon as I did, but I took losing my job as an opportunity to move forward rather than be upset or hurt. I have since started my own design company and aspire to impact someone the way Jeff has influenced me.

I want to thank everyone for watching the show -– it's been one crazy ride and I'm glad you could be there every step of the way with me.

Hey, someone out there tell me which episode Trace was fired on.  What Sarah, too????  I was just last week watching marathons everyday and thought I was caught up, but now watching the season opener to season 6 and either I've missed the mention of Trace and Sarah's departures or I've missed a whole season somehow.  Thanks!!!

Trace...good luck. You are DARLING!!!! You will be missed!

You're a class act Trace.

Trace you will be so missed on this show. It's just not going to be the same without you and Sarah. I will definitely keep my eye out and would love to hire you for upcoming improvements I want to do to my home in South Orange County.

Trace....I was shocked that he fired you. I will miss you. =o(

I'm sorry, but Jeff really blew it with you. I think he is threatened by your calm demeanor. And your talent. However, if I were to be a client in LA, I would choose you over Jeff, precisely for those reasons. So, I know you will be successful. There is also a lot of self-deprecation that comes along with working for Jeff Lewis, it seems. And I don't think it's a healthy environment for most people in the long-term. After the initial shock, I, too, realized it was actually better and healthier for you in the long run to move on at this time. Jeff seems to think that because he taught you a great deal, that you were somehow an extension of him. True teachers are far more selfless than that. Jeff is not a teacher. He is a narcissist. I don't think it's entirely his fault as I do see he has some sort of emotional deficit which I don't know if he can ever overcome. He is who he is. However, he did not mold you. You came talented ... and ready to learn. Even your blog was so professional. I feel sorry for Jeff, but I wouldn't want to work for him. And I'm happy for you (now) that you learned all that you did ... and can move on. All my best! Please stay professional and do not let celebrity get to your head. Jeff said that it has, but that's exactly what happened to him. And I hope that doesn't happen to you. A life without cameras in your face is a good life. Trust the millions of us living those lives. : ) Enjoy your freedom.

I love you trace, your adorable and seem to take everything with stride! Good luck, but I hope we get to see more of your adorable face!

Good luck Trace, we will miss you.

You show a lot of class with this blog, Trace, something a lot of people your age wouldn't be ready to do. Wishing you the best of luck, you seem to be really talented. It's just as important to know what you DON'T want to do and how you DON'T want to behave. Be a kinder boss.

Good luck, really to hated to see you leave.

Congratulations on your new venture, Trace! You were a big part of why I have continued to watch "Flipping Out," and I will definitely miss you.

You were the cutest thing on Flipping Out! Was hurt to see how unprofessional the handling of your departure was. I wish you the best in your future endeavors!

Great way to look at it Trace. I had a feeling you would start you own firm. You are very talented and there are many great things in your future. Good Luck!!

I was so disappointed that Jeff fired you. You were one of my favorites on the show. You handled him so well by not reacting to him on each and every episode. You knew that the only to react to Jeff was to say very little. Jeff just enjoys bullying people and it is annoying. He justifies it by saying it is only business but we can all see that is not true. I wish you all the best in your future and hope you are very successful.

Oh,Nooooooooo. First of all, Great job Trace. Sencond of all, Trace i was watching Flippilg Out because of YOU!!!!Miss you and Take Care!!!!Good-Luck! Kyoko

Well said Trace. As a fellow design student/designer I understand the opportunity that Jeff provided you. It was probably a job of a lifetime. I hope one day to be able to learn and grow like you did at a firm like Jeff Lewis Design!

Good luck in your new endeavor!

P.S if you ever need an intern I'd love to work for you!

Sad to see Trace leave the show but happy he has a positive spin on it. Best of Luck!

I loved watching you on the show. I'll miss you A LOT! Best of luck in your endeavors.

The way you were fired was brutal and on TV to boot OUCH! I think you have a bright future ahead of you!

Can't believe Jeff did that, Gage has ruined this show by trying to fire everyone. Sarah wasn't the greatest, but Trace was one of my favorites and I'm really going to miss him on the show. I think "Flipping Out" is going to lose a lot of viewers, including me! If Bravo was smart they'd make a show for Trace, I'd defiantly watch, best of luck trace.

that was sweet,,best wishes..

I will miss you on the show, I thought your wit was amazing. Jeff is a definite character, granted he is a great designer. I'm in a similar work situation as yours and I want to move up, but the room for growth seems lateral. Anyway, I will always watch out for you, not to mention your a sexy gay boy.

It's easy to stagnate in a job after a couple of years. Congrats on starting your own design company. Now the onus is on you to succeed.

I thought you were a class act on Flipping Out. If we were all fired for wasting time at work thinking about our closets the American economy would be even worse than it is now. Good luck to you in your new firm.

I completely understand how you feel and I give you props for not making a big scene for loosing your job. I mean in my opinion I wouldn't have fired you over a design plan for my closet, but that's just me. Anyway, best of luck to your business and who knows...you may be designing my next house! :)

Gonna miss you. Hope you to see on bravo. #gagetherat

I think Jeff was wrong to fire you. Anyone can make a mistake, especially somewho is new to the business. He should have given you another chance. Now he has bitten off his nose to spite his face.

I understand Jeff's anger with your doing personal work on his dime, however why does he always have to be abusive? It's okay to call people out for what they do wrong, but when you then go into "You're an F-ing A-hole", you really can't later on question why you didn't get the response you wanted. I admire you for how you handle his abusiveness. Because that is not okay, abuse is never okay. You did the right thing by leaving and not fighting for your position. No one ever wins when abuse is involved.

I love you marry me. Are u at least getting your own show, or do we need to watch reruns in order to see you!?! =\

Congratulations on your new design business. I'm excited for your new journey and success! You are very admirable.

Very well said. Very mature. This proves your value Trace. You have a good head on your sholders. I just wished that would have come threw on the show when he let you go. I know that it was a surprise and caught you off guard. Learn, grow, Succeed. Great way to put it!

Trace,

You're a class act. Only a few episodes back, while complaining about Sarah, Jeff told you how valuable you are to his company. He's just demonstrates lunatic, emotional, manipulative, abusive behavior towards his employees with no tolerance. Anything can set him off. Be thankful for the experience and good for you for getting out in time! good luck!

I think this is very admirable Trace! From the outside looking in, it appears that Jeff is damn good at what he does, and he obviously didn't get there by being an idiot. Its awesome that Jeff allows interns, so that he can pass on some of that impressive knowledge! You were an amazing part of the team, and will be missed! Good luck, with all of your current and future ventures, I'm sure you will continue to be amazing!

We will so miss you! I think there may be a spinoff idea as it would be much more interesting watching you start your design business than watch Jeff ruin his. Maybe you and Sarah could team up for some type of new show. Lets face it, we've seen the same happen on Jeff's show over and over (not the firings of course). It's time for something new.

So sad to see Jeff treat you that way. You deserved a second chance. He was still angry that you didn't come to his speech in Vegas. Good luck to you.

I am going to miss you so much. And I want you to know that I felt you handled the firing with grace. I hope the best for you. The very best. I believe the atmosphere in the office (that it had became) made it a place that you really did not want to walk into much less work.

Good for you, Trace! I didn't think your termination was totally warranted.

Trace, you showed class and I hope you succeed moving forward. Jeff was not very professional in the way he dismissed you; you should have had some time to prepare for the meeting. As it relates to your working on your closet, every employee has down time (lunch/breaks) and I am sure you can equate that time to doing something for yourself. Right? Good luck

Congralations on your design firm TRace you have amazing talant and will go far! I respect you more fore taking the high road and being the better person! I would def use you to remodel my home!!

Well said! It's qualities like yours that people find admirable, you wont have trouble bouncing back. That was a great opportunity that most people don't have the luxury of having, you are very lucky. Although we will be sad not to see you on tv anymore, we can feel comfortable knowing you are doing well. This chapter in your life has come to an end, the next should be amazing!

We wish you all the best with your future plans! Sad that we won't see you on the show anymore, it was a way for us to see you once in a while. For the record, I believe you're still that same humble kid who left home years ago! Maybe you have more confidence, as you should! Take Care, Trace!

Nice! Now please provide us with information on your new design company. Take advantage of being read by thousands of people to promote yourself.

It was sad to see you get fired from JLD, but it's great to see the level of optimism you have for your future. Good luck with your own company. I have no doubt you'll do great and you will always have fans out here cheering for you. :)

I love you! Well articulated!!!! I'm sure that you will succeed in all that you do. I know I would hire you!!!! :) The best to you....

Gad things are working out for you. I personally think Gage is maniplating Jeff.

You were professional while working for Jeff, professional when Gage...I mean Jeff....fired you and your blog is so kind. You will do well and go far.

Good bye Trace...you will be missed. I think Jeff should have given you another chance, but then, we don't see everything, so there may have been other things that led up to his 'mini' blow up at you. But, good luck to you..
