Carson Kressley and Thom Filicia Share the Secret to Incorporating Your Personal Style into Design

Have you ever visited someone’s house for the first time and felt like you stumbled by accident into a dentist's waiting room — nondescript furnishings, walls barren except for the occasional mass reproduction hunt scene, a sad plant drooping by the window. There's one word to describe what's missing: Character. But in all fairness, finding your personal style at home can be hard to do, which is why we’ve asked our resident design gurus Thom Filicia and Carson Kressleystars of the new makeover show Get a Room with Carson and Thom for tips on how to make a space uniquely your own.

How to Watch

Catch up on Get a Room with Carson & Thom on the Bravo App.

“Personal style is so important,” says Carson, “because your outfit or your room should really tell your story, and you never want to look like you walked out of the store like a mannequin, and you never want your home to look like the showroom of the furniture store.”

To zero in on your home’s look, Thom advises raiding your closet. “A simple and easy trick to incorporate your personal style into your home is open up your closet doors, look at your personal style, your color, your texture, your pattern, use that as a springboard to create a beautiful interior,” he says.

Then go about finding things that reflect who you are. “They can be they can be family photographs, they can be family heirlooms, things that you found on trips,” says Carson.

Lastly, never underestimate the power of color and art when it comes to making a bold statement. “Art is a great way to add personality,” advises Carson. “Everybody has their favorite color that they feel they look best in. Try that in your room. If it’s hot pink, do it in a powder room, a place where you don’t have to spend a lot of time, but have fun with color.”

Be sure to watch Get a Room on Fridays at 9/8c!
